atroche··on Ollaya – Ollama for open-source, Jev-style decision models
you could help it along by providing clues about the domain in the prompt. including what various proper nouns might indicate (assuming they're not chosen completely at random, and encode at least some meaning).

and you might find the scores it gives back about its confidence are useful for escalating to a more expensive classifier.

but also, there's no requirement to use it as a zero-shot classifier, you can provide it as many examples as you like, and prioritise giving it examples it had previously gotten wrong. and with input caching it might be economical.

I'd be surprised if they or others don't start offering a fine tuning API for models like this, like openai does for some models (or used to, I haven't checked in a long time).

atroche··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
Even better (for some topics) would be to play a Factorio-style game (or a Factorio mod).

Leaving aside the whole can-we-trust-LLMs aspect, the ChipTycoon page is not really a simulation, and the animation doesn't actually add anything. I like the author's intent, but there's a lot of work to do still before he makes this useful.

Surprised no one's dropped a link to Bret Victor's https://worrydream.com/LadderOfAbstraction/ ("A Systematic Approach to Interactive Visualization") yet.

atroche··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
From the article:

> I proceed asking it to build a simulation of that topic in a low-poly, Rollercoaster Tycoon-like animation

Sounds like the Rollercoaster Tycoon part is just referring to the aesthetics/graphics, and the author is just suggesting building a top-down isometric 2D animated simulation (which I agree is a bit limiting, there are definitely some things where you'd want to be able to fly around a 3D space in first person, move time back and forth, manipulate parts of it).

atroche··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
That sounds amazing. Which IaC tools are you starting with? Do you pull metrics and logs from the AWS/GCP APIs?
atroche··on WASM 3.0 Completed
This is one of the best WASM-based web UIs I've seen! What was the hardest part of getting your desktop build working via Emscripten?
atroche··on Ultima VII: Revisited
This is awesome, keep up the good work! Have liked and subscribed =)

After this section…

> Ultima VII was in development from 1990 to 1992 (shipping in April ’92), and even though software 3D was taking off at the time, it hadn’t been designed as a 3D game (even though it used a 3D world) and that contributed to its issues.

> But software-rendered 3D games with isometric perspectives started coming out very soon after Ultima VII, and every time I saw one I thought, “This is what Ultima VII should have looked like.”

…there are clips from three games: Dungeon Keeper (June 1997), Myth II (Dec. 1998) and Grandia (Dec. 1997). Not sure if that really counts as coming out 'very soon' after Ultima VII!

atroche··on DeepSeek-V3
One key, one base_url config, one billing account. If you like to mess around with many different models it's very convenient.
atroche··on Getting 50% (SoTA) on Arc-AGI with GPT-4o
Yep, but a float is more useful than a bool for tracking progress, especially if you want to answer questions like "how soon can we expect (drivers/customer support staff/programmers) to lose their jobs?"

Hard to find the right float but worth trying I think.

atroche··on Overtone – programmable, live music in Clojure
Hah, I actually came to this comments thread to link to this. I had a similar experience with my SO!
atroche··on Ask HN: What is Marc Andreessen talking about
Possibly meant in the sense of Blue Tribe / Red Tribe from here: https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/09/30/i-can-tolerate-anythin...

But maybe it's just more generally red as euphemism for conservative (b/c of how political maps are coloured in the US).

atroche··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
There are costs to creating and enforcing regulation, and then more costs if it needs to be rolled back (say, if there are unforeseen downsides to it).
atroche··on Advent of Code Day 24: Computing with Sets
What was the thought process that led to this solution? Did day 24 remind you of some other problem you'd seen before?
atroche··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
Yep, have recently had some troubles with provisioning two relatively new products (Redpanda and Materialize), and both of them relied on Slack communities and it's really not an experience I enjoy or find helpful.
atroche··on All Applications for Nuclear Energy at COP26 Rejected
But was it being "propped up" two centuries ago?
atroche··on Reactive Clojure: A web language
How does the reactivity work with Datomic? Is it polling those queries? Or I’d it listening to the log of transactions and figuring out when relevant parts have changed?
atroche··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
Fwiw they consider themselves a weekly newspaper, not a magazine. It's been more than a century since they were focused on economics.
atroche··on GPG-Tui, a Terminal User Interface for GnuPG
Wow, excellent work. Love how much effort has gone into the readme.

There was definitely a gap here and you filled it :)

atroche··on Sid Meier: “I don’t think I could make Civilisation today”
Yep, CK3 is in the top ten games on Steam, hitting almost 100,000 simultaneous players most days: https://steamcharts.com/app/1158310
atroche··on Feds say Yale discriminates against Asian, white applicants
Would be interested to see if Asians whose families have been in the USA for many years get in at different rates to e.g. immigrants or the children of immigrants. It would indicate that perhaps Yale et al. really do care about "personality", and aren't just being racist.
atroche··on A philosophical difference between Haskell and Lisp (2015)
I'm sure you (OP) are aware, but just in case others aren't: Clojure stands out as a Lisp that embraces laziness.
atroche··on The Age of Mass Surveillance Will Not Last Forever
Yeah, if the CCP had evolved into the liberal democracy people were hoping they would (in the lead up to 1997, e.g.), then Hong Kongers would not mind so much.
atroche··on Who gets invited to the party?
I'm guessing they mean USSR- or CCP-style totalitarianism.
atroche··on Ask HN: What is the best enterprise software you use every day?
This has been my exact setup (except 15" instead of 16") for four years now, and I also have never had problems.
atroche··on MoreOnionsPorfavor: Onionize your website and take back the internet
Why haven't we seen a pay-for-use version of Tor yet? The network won't scale unless exit and relay nodes are incentivized with value beyond warm-fuzzies.
atroche··on I Am Deleting the Blog
I can't see it on Wikipedia. Do you have a link?
atroche··on Mozilla VPN
I love FastMail. Never looked back.
atroche··on Quotebacks – Quote the Web
I too can't wait for the FF version :)
atroche··on Tell HN: Triplebyte reverses, emails apology
I think it's very telling that Ammon never replied to this. I'm guessing it's because engineers did push back, and he overruled them.
atroche··on Second-Guessing the Modern Web
I'm skeptical of that. Have you timed it in Chrome DevTools? E.g. when I hit 'c' on the keyboard to compose an email, it's effectively instantaneous.
atroche··on Second-Guessing the Modern Web
I had a feeling that maybe Craigslist was declining in popularity, but it looks like they're still going strong: https://www.keranews.org/post/25-years-understanding-longevi...

(my intuition was probably based on the fact that it's not very popular in Australia, where I am)
