atto··on Learn Perfect Pitch in 15 years
I can also do this, don't have perfect pitch, was also a cello player, and have a guess.

Instruments have fairly unique timbres at different pitches, and our brain can pattern match that more effectively than pitch itself. So, you can actually "burn in" the correct timbre, which makes it easier to find. Since I was so used to an A reference note for tuning, I got to where I could get pretty close.

Years later, I saw this video, with someone who seems to have brute forced it to approximate perfect pitch using a similar method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oT22zqg0jvE

atto··on Calm Company Fund Is Taking a Break
FWIW: I'm an investor in all of Calm's funds (I think I was one of the earliest investors in Fund 1), and have been quite happy with the funds themselves. They've done great — outperforming my own expectations.

As indie.vc also found, it's just hard to make these styles of funds work on the business side.

atto··on Calm Company Fund Is Taking a Break
I'm an LP in both Calm and the fund, SureSwift, that's suing them, so I suspect I know as much as anyone external. Weirdly, the only information I've been able to glean is from Calm, but I did participate in the events personally that are part of the litigation.

The other fund, SureSwift, had some drama (founding GP left, replaced with a hired CEO who seems entirely competent), and SureSwift shortly after sued Calm and the former GP. I never got a good picture what happened internally, but there certainly was a falling out.

Speaking personally, the lawsuit seems like a giant waste of time and I haven't heard anything that makes me think Calm actually did anything wrong. I've asked, and got very confusing empty responses from SureSwift. I wish I knew more, since I love this space (calm companies, micro PE, etc) and am personally invested on both sides.

atto··on Ask HN: Where are all the touch-based art forms?
I do pottery as a serious hobby (though, people buy my stuff), and was recently talking with a friend about how—for me—it's not really about producing art, but the personal experience of making pieces.

I'm glad people like what I make, but I do it not to say something, and rather to experience something.

atto··on Ask HN: How would you go about meeting a bunch of new people IRL?
I moved to a new town a few years ago, and was worried about forming a new social group. What did it for me: be the instigator. Most people want to improve their social connections, and many have the same sort of "starting problem". Being the one to organize events is a surprisingly easy way to immediately have many people around, and importantly lets you set the terms of the engagement.

The best short, easy resource on what I mean is this book: https://party.pro/book/. The Art of Gathering is another good one if you want to go deeper.

You may be concerned that you don't know many people, so can't easily organize an event where people would come. This is actually solvable (see the book above). The nice thing is that this also lets you risk and experiment with social failure ("what if people don't show?", etc), which in my experience is the cause of a lot of social anxiety.

atto··on Show HN: Readwise Reader, an all-in-one reading app
Been using Reader as my primary reading + save for later app for a few months. It's truly a joy — it's fast, simple, and works really well. There's obviously a cold-start problem where you need to use it for a bit to get most of the value, so I'd encourage anyone here that's interested in a similar app to give it a couple weeks.
atto··on We don't show typing status
If you're stuck using Slack and don't like their behavior of sharing typing status, I made a browser extension years ago that blocks that: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/slack-hide-typing/...
atto··on Show HN: I made a database of remote companies
Seems more like incomplete data. Spot checked a few of the "programming" ones that did not have "paid vacation" listed, and sure enough, they do (example: https://convertkit.com/careers/).

atto··on New GM Cruise Self-Driving Video Shows More Mastery of SF Roads
In Mountain View (off Castro St), yep, all the time. In SF, no.
atto··on Show HN: Kifi for Teams – Knowledge sharing and collaboration for teams
Thanks for the feedback, we're still honing the message. Here's some of our differentiating features:

• Full-text search. Keep a page—or a co-worker keeps something work related—and you can search for anything inside it. Great for finding that blog post where you remember some of the content, but not the title.

• Integration into Google. With our Chrome and Firefox extensions, your keeps show directly in Google. You don't have to remember you kept a page, and they come back when you're searching for them.

• Communication. The browser extension easily lets you chat on the page or send the page as an email. This makes isolating conversations to specific content very easy. Even highlight a section of the page and send the highlight.

• Libraries (groups of keeps) can be published, shared, and collaborated on. Here are some of my public ones: https://www.kifi.com/andrew. We have tens more private that we use internally.

Trello is awesome for task collaboration, and we think we compliment them for keeping track and collaborating on web resources. Would love your feedback, feel free to email me direct at andrew@kifi.com with any more thoughts.

atto··on Show HN: Kifi for Teams – Knowledge sharing and collaboration for teams
We're a startup, but I want it to exist for years to come too :). We're working on the sustainable business model, starting with paid premium teams plans. Currently, they allow more granular control over privacy/team settings, and will include more features like powerful integrations, content-saving, etc very soon.
atto··on Show HN: Kifi for Teams – Knowledge sharing and collaboration for teams
Kifi is a knowledge management tool. Think social bookmarking, with lots more added. We index every page you keep, giving free full-text searching across all your content, integrated straight into Google with our Chrome and Firefox extensions.

Today we're launching our teams feature, letting you easily save, collaborate, and search content with a group of people. I'd love feedback and suggestions. It's completely changed bookmarking for me, and hope it can help others be more productive as well. Both the personal and teams product are free. If you want to check out the upgraded teams features, use code HACKERNEWS for $150 in credit.

atto··on Ask HN: How to handle tech interviews?
Startups in general are less dogmatic in hiring methodologies. We've screened candidates based on very strong personal references, Github, Stack Overflow, etc. However, we've found many people don't have a lot of available work "out there" for us to look at; at which point, we fall back to coffee meetings to establish fit, and technical interviews.

If you want to skip this "hiring manager" game, find startups that are small enough where the people hiring will be the people you'd work with. You'll get a better culture fit idea, and can be a lot more flexible regarding what they expect.

atto··on Show HN: Share many links? We made it better with highlights
Yep, right now the extension is required. We're talking about future plans for people who like some of our features, but not everything — we want to be as unobtrusive as possible.

Our primary goal is to enable people to keep and collaborate content easier than before. In addition to discussions, we have a full-text search engine that incorporates into Google results, showing links you've kept if they're relevant to your search. From that standpoint, we're a "much better bookmarking platform". Over time, we'll be helping people discover interesting content, too.

This email-a-page feature is actually just our newest, and isn't the core of the product. However, it looks like many people really like this, stand alone. I'll bring this up with product, and see if we can come to something that will meet your needs. In a perfect world, would you like a more minimalistic extension that JUST did this, a bookmarklet, or something else? We want to be the easiest way to share and collaborate about content with others.

atto··on Show HN: Share many links? We made it better with highlights
(I work on Kifi)

Right now the email limits are very loose. Legitimate usage won't run into anything. We're sending the emails ourselves, from a custom address for each link. When they reply, you get the reply instantly inside Kifi. When you send a link on Kifi, you'll be able to preview exactly what was emailed.

atto··on Show HN: Share many links? We made it better with highlights
Yep, we're building that, it will be out with the site redesign coming out in the next couple weeks. Until then, if you'd like an export, contact support and we can send you a standard bookmark export file.
atto··on YouTube Founders to Sell Delicious, a Social Bookmarking Site
Check out https://www.kifi.com. I'm an engineer there, so am very biased, but it might be what you're looking for. We're building a full text search engine that integrates directly on Google, so you can find important things super easily.

We have on-page contextual discussions (launching early next week: sending a link to any email address, and replies to the email thread show up in the discussion). And we're working on recommendation engines based on your keeps / social connections. Let me know what you think, we're a small team and want to make it the most useful platform as possible.

atto··on The Next Chapter
Unfortunately, that would often break. We've put a lot of effort into URL normalization (ie, http://smile.amazon.com/TP-Link-TL-WA701ND-150Mbps-Wireless-... is the same as http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002YETVVE/). When we can do "good enough" on the client so we can provide the same benefits, we'll do it. Or: provide a setting that forces URLs to exactly match, and we can use a bloom filter to keep traffic down.
atto··on The Next Chapter
(I work on Kifi)

Hear you loud and clear. We're working on a strategy so that it's not needed. Right now, that information is used only to determine if you or a friend has kept a page, or if you have previous conversations on the page.

atto··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2014)
FortyTwo — Mountain View, CA — Frontend / mobile / backend (H1B okay, read below)

Hi all, I'm Andrew from FortyTwo. We're a well-funded Series A startup (~10 engineers) in Mountain View building https://www.kifi.com/. It's a lot more than a bookmarking service: we're building a search engine and content discovery system that blows away what's out there by letting you organize everything super easily, while not asking you to change your searching habits. We have a product that we love, and have lots to do still.

Right now, we're looking hard for:

• Frontend - we're building a cross-browser browser extension and a site using AngularJS. Ideal candidate is very comfortable with JavaScript, at least one backend (non-JS) language, and has used a thick-client MV* style framework. Full description is here: http://www.42go.com/frontend.html

• Mobile - we're building an iOS client as well as starting an Android client. Ideal candidate has experience releasing consumer mobile products, and has strong engineering skills to make an efficient and pleasant-to-use app. More here: http://www.42go.com/mobile.html

• Backend / Full stack - we use Scala, Play!, and Akka to build a highly-available, reactive backend to serve our clients. Ideal candidate has experience on the JVM, functional programming, and continuous deployment. More here: http://www.42go.com/join_us.html#backend

We blog at http://eng.42go.com, so check out some of the stuff we're working on. We're okay to sponsor H1Bs, but prefer Bay Area candidates already so we can move faster. To apply, email towel@42go.com with your resume/github/LinkedIn.

atto··on The Absurdity of LinkedIn
Neat trick: when wanting to see the full profile, just search LinkedIn for their name. If you come from search results, you can see the full profile (if their privacy settings allow it, which most do).
atto··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Check out https://www.kifi.com. Nearly everything you mention is out there or is on the near-term roadmap. We'd love feedback, I help build it.
atto··on The Invention of the AeroPress
Around a medium grind, finer if you prefer richer coffee (closer to espresso). Since you're using a filter, it doesn't need to be nearly as large as a french press grind.
atto··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2014)
Whoops. Thanks, fixing.
