austinbv··on Focused Company Operating Principles
I actually violently agree with you... it's one reason I never really wanted to write it down. I think culture is so evolutionary that any document is either historical or aspirational. We tried to write these as more behaviors than values. Be exothermic, it's neither a goal nor history it's just who we are.

but I see your point

We are a bit bigger than 2 or three folks :)

we talk about this in our onboarding. Its why we have two guiding docs, values & operating principles.

The values are active and hopefully not aspirational, master your craft, listen first, learn why. We stole from the famous netflix deck to create them and they boiled out of our first few employees.

The operating principles are different. They came from a couple sr folks while we were hiring pretty aggressively. They had the job of training and onboarding and wanted to encapsulate how we engage more tactically. I like them, my favorite is exothermic, i would have never created them though, which is cool to see.

good catch. Fixed
austinbv··on Focused Company Operating Principles
These were not designed by leadership. I am pretty cynical of values as well, and these bubbled out of a few sr engineers who cared about helping new folks assimilate to our engagement style quickly.

happy to talk more about it

austinbv··on Focused Company Operating Principles
We often say, values are the sum of all the people who have ever been or are at Focused.

We try really hard not to make them aspirational. I will say leadership didn't make these they came from our engineers.

I am the CEO & owner of Focused.io. It's pretty cool to see my site on the front page when I check HN in the morning and a page posted by someone I don't know at all... I think.

I can give a backstory on these if you're interested but they weren't designed my me, or actually anyone on our leadership team. We are a small company (think around 60 folks) all engineers and super client facing. A couple years ago a few of our more Sr staff wanted to document the "guiding principles" on what made someone at Focused... good. Like how we show up. I tend to think corporate values usefulness extends about as far as a wifi password but this group and specifically one person was super persistent and passionate about writing down why he felt we were a unique bunch...

I am happy to answer questions or discuss them. Any cool to see

austinbv··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2026)
Focused.io is hiring Agent Engineers & OTel / o11y experts in Denver, Chicago, and London. Onsite

austinbv··on I built HotMic – An open source voice to email app
I saw an app superwhisper that let you dictate emails. Essentially pass voice -> transcribe -> llm process -> paste bin. Figured I could build it pretty quick.

Help yourself and would love some help if you like it.

Uses groq under the hood but could add ollama pretty easily.

I was also curious how much I could generate vs write. It's all generated... :mind-blown:

Is there an easy way to get context back to the developer so they can pinpoint hallucinations?
austinbv··on 32“ E Ink screen that displays daily newspapers on your wall (2021)
all good - it's a great little project
austinbv··on 32“ E Ink screen that displays daily newspapers on your wall (2021)
The mirror (reflective) is not what matters. Magic mirror is just a OSS dashboard with lots of modules designed to go on a screen. My question is can you load Javascript and things that refresh on this screen.

Would this work with magic mirror?

If so I will order right away

austinbv··on Apple, Google and Microsoft Commit to Expanded Support for FIDO Standard
The problem with any key based auth or biometric auth is a user can be compelled by LEO to hand over private keys or open a biometric lock.

Passwords are protected by the 5th amendment.

austinbv··on I liked the idea of carbon offsets until I tried to explain it
It's an economic bet - the article assumes static pricing for offsets vs mitigation. That's just naive.

As there is less rainforest to buy and the last few squares get more and more expensive. Along the way things like solar, bio, and other green energy continue to become more economical to implement

Eventually there will be a tipping point where it's cheaper to move to green than to offset emissions.

austinbv··on Why I am tired of writing pull requests
Yeah thanks for linking all of my pulls, I am not op though I just edited the gist. If you look at the bottom of the gist history you will see the original author, I just feel his/her pain
austinbv··on Why I am tired of writing pull requests

austinbv··on Why I am tired of writing pull requests
