avoidwork··on Rethinking Netflix’s Edge Load Balancing
`X-Netflix.server.utilization` makes my eyes bleed; dot notation in a header name... why?
avoidwork··on Ask HN: Is a computer science degree worth it or should I learn on my own?
both
avoidwork··on Ask HN: Do you keep a copy of your source code when you quit your job?
no, because that's theft; would anyone hire you if they knew you had a history of stealing IP?
avoidwork··on RFC 7396 – JSON Merge Patch
6901 is very similiar to XML XPath*, https://www.w3.org/TR/xpath-31/.

JSON Patch can be MVCC ops to apply to an object, where as a JSON Merge Patch is overrides?

" There are a few things to note about the function. If the patch is anything other than an object, the result will always be to replace the entire target with the entire patch. Also, it is not possible to patch part of a target that is not an object, such as to replace just some of the values in an array."

I don't see how that's better. I'm legitimately asking as I've implemented JSON Patch support in API gateways due to the "over-engineered" & useful applications in real life.

Why not JSON Patch? https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6902
avoidwork··on Ask HN: How do HN webdevs ensure cross-browser support for websites/webapps?
Are those "large portion of people" your customers? If not, they don't matter.

IE11 in general does not matter.

Use statistics to make decisions about feature adoption, do not generalize or guess... that's a straw man that'll burn in a meeting.

avoidwork··on Ask HN: How do HN webdevs ensure cross-browser support for websites/webapps?
You're having trouble finding alternatives, because there isn't really an alternative method. What you call 'unsupported' turns out to be well supported today; this is the reason selenium is so good at this job.

no dot pitch, not useful
avoidwork··on Are PDF's Obsolete?
wow
avoidwork··on Yubico sent marketing email to address submitted for product replacement
> It's fine if you don't do any of this or, for that matter, if you don't even care. But don't belittle the work when you don't understand the reasons for it.

Maybe don't over invest your emotions in something that isn't really important in the scheme of life? shrug. I don't think this is belittlement, but advice on how to manage stress.

avoidwork··on Yubico sent marketing email to address submitted for product replacement
this says nothing about the company values; a person made the wrong decision. you’re blowing it up in a fantastical way, like the author of the editorial.

i don’t make purposeful email addresses; i don’t have time for that.

avoidwork··on Ask HN: Is it useful to predict disk full?
devops isn't my primary role, so 'no'. i do keep track with 'df' and general growth projection such that what i am responsible for rarely runs out of disk space. i usually just have to consider my logrotate settings, and move on.

i've been on projects that did actually run out of disk space in production, and then things crash quickly, and usually comically (from my pov).

avoidwork··on Ask HN: Is it useful to predict disk full?
yes
avoidwork··on Show HN: Async-iterators (js map, each, reduce for async functions)
I don't get it; your scripts generate a bunch of extra promises because typescript and the 'problem' is faster than your solution?
avoidwork··on A Rank of NPM packages updated daily
i think there's a flaw in your script; you miss counted one of my libs by a few hundred, when compared to npmjs.com
avoidwork··on JMESPath – A query language for JSON
why choose this over jsonpath (like xmlpath) or jq?
avoidwork··on Downloading SSH Keys via DNS
this is a horrible idea. there is no case where you're able to generate an ssh key and can't take the public key with you. you have a clipboard, and an email address.
avoidwork··on Is stack-overflow a block-chain concept?
a forum as a public ledger doesn't make sense due to the processing requirements. a public ledger just doesn't make sense for most things.
avoidwork··on Ask HN: How much would you pay for a code review?
zero. i could get an opinion anywhere; if i want a peer review i'll make sure to ask someone i think would have a relevant opinion.
avoidwork··on Tell HN: A gigantic JavaScript security opportunity – who is going to do it?
there is a company behind the package; i'm sure they'd take your money.

Great post. I once cut a 10min query to a few seconds by changing a few joins to be subqueries which ran like a map/reduce in the db (prod data vs theoretical).

ORMs are great in some cases, and the cause of pain in others.

avoidwork··on Kotlin is like TypeScript
maybe because it's javascript, which is borrows from scheme, which is a lisp?
avoidwork··on Should we do terminal first web development?
i can't even; there's better ways to do cli.
avoidwork··on Should we do terminal first web development?
um, no. if you love browsing the net with lynx, more power to you, but you're not even a rounding error in the scheme of things.
avoidwork··on Ask HN: Why this package gets about 200 downloads after each release on npm?
This can be useful: http://npm-stats.com/~packages/moro
