b800h··on My gym forced a social media down my throat. So I reverse-engineered its app
This person has too much time on their hands.
b800h··on If you love a website, back it up
Ironically the author's website has a copyright notice at the bottom, which means I can't archive it. Right?
b800h··on Rising rates of colorectal cancer found in nearly all age groups
Happening in the UK too though.
b800h··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Hahaha
b800h··on Sam Altman: 'I No Longer Think We're Gonna Be Able to Just Patch All the Bugs'
Both!
b800h··on Porting video games to VHS
All of these issues are faced by microcassettes for data storage.

See for example the Kansas City Standard:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_standard

And of course the sound output is "headache inducing", albeit loved by people of the era:

b800h··on Porting video games to VHS
You could store it at a higher bandwidth than the cassette tapes that games came on back then, particularly in the UK and Europe. So have the first 4 minutes of the tape be the game loader, as code, stored in one of the analog / digital formats in use back then. No QR codes necessary, but fascinating to see people coming up with a similar concept here from first principles.
b800h··on Rabbits were a medieval royal luxury in England until the Black Death
Hmm. It's made me think about Lièvre à la Royale (Hare à la Royale), but of course Hares are not rabbits (they taste gamier).

The guys from Fallow made a video on YouTube about attempting to make a really good one.

Apparently Lapin à la Moutarde is the classic rabbit dish.

b800h··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
Perhaps a version of the Doorman Fallacy, ie. replacing a doorman with an automatic door seems like an obvious win, but it turns out the doorman was performing a number of other vital functions (customer experience, for example) which weren't considered.
b800h··on Porn showing choking or incest to be banned in UK from early November
Yes, but this is different, it's completely banned, and presumably would mean that all over 18 subreddits would have to be shut off for the UK, unless Reddit were prepared to engage in heavy moderation.
b800h··on Porn showing choking or incest to be banned in UK from early November
Fascinating to see how this will be enforced, given that US sites like Reddit carry this, and it's almost impossible to filter it at a per-post level.

Will they just ban adult subreddits for UK users (by which I mean anything with 18+ content of any sort)?

b800h··on Things to know when you get cancer
Yes. Had I not gone private I would have died.
b800h··on Things to know when you get cancer
I'm ever so sorry to hear this.

This is probably very unwelcome advice, but I would strongly recommend a spiritual practice of some kind. When things are wretched, slowing down for a moment and turning inward can help. Prayer (to whatever form makes sense) or at least Yoga (something that isn't passive) may be more helpful than meditation in these circumstances, but I appreciate this might not be right for you.

b800h··on Things to know when you get cancer
It's rather depressing how little of this advice would be helpful under the lamentable NHS in the UK.
b800h··on Why were Victorian elites so effective?
This is glorious; how we've fallen.

As regards sports, I attended a public school [note the terminology here as per the article], and we still had the "three half day" system. Those of us who were hopeless at sports could actually pursue personal interests in some of those afternoons, but I think that was an innovation.

b800h··on House with 15m underground tunnels for sale for 300k
Can't access this site - wants me to enable some form of tracking that my DNS doesn't allow. Alternate source?
b800h··on ADHD, autism or complex trauma? [pdf]
I find this fascinating. "Relief and grief", but one way or another, you were always in trouble or being blamed for being "you".

The thing we call ADHD is just one phenotype amongst thousands. Every behaviour has a cause, and anyone out there who has been through a childhood with traumatic experiences and feelings of guilt and inadequacy need to understand that they don't need to be told that they have the currently-fashionable condition in order to forgive themselves.

This sounds flippant, but I don't mean it to be: What if I said that this happened because you had Mercury in Taurus? The point is here that nothing is your fault. Conversely, everything is; this mirrors the free-will vs predestination paradox.

b800h··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
That has nothing to do with it. It's due to legal liability.
b800h··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I wondered how demographic change was affecting this, and it does appear to be the case that 20% of that change in the UK is due to the Muslim population doubling.
b800h··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
This seems to resonate with the idea of the universe existing on the skin of an expanding hypersphere. Is there anything in that link?
b800h··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
Is that result proven?
b800h··on The forgotten battle of East Lansing
Nice reminder that higher education wasn't always a bastion of the radical left-wing. But wait!

'“It is indeed refreshing to know,” wrote one lawmaker, “that we have at least one instance of higher learning that is not shot through with communism.”'

Ah. Perhaps this answer's the article's question of why no-one commemorated it with a folk song in the 60s.

b800h··on OpenAI agent hacked Australian government website, PM says
Hacking requires intent in most jurisdictions. We probably require a new crime of "Hacking by Negligence".
b800h··on Show HN: A competition for small neural networks that play strategy games
Around 1997 there was something awfully similar to this doing the rounds, called AI Wars. IIRC it was code rather than weights, but it's a funny parallel. 30 years! God I'm old.
b800h··on A 32-year-old bug walks into a Telnet server
Oh yes, "RISC is going to change everything". I remember that line.

Clunky from the author, I think.

b800h··on A 32-year-old bug walks into a Telnet server
That made me spit out my tea. The prose was insulting.
b800h··on A 32-year-old bug walks into a Telnet server
> "1994" > "RISC was a distant dream"

Ahem

b800h··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
You can't deny it's a bit popular right now. "Aphantasia is the new AuDHD".

Doesn't mean it's not real, but I'm sure we'll see it creep into "I have aphantasia because I'm unable to crisply visualise a fully detailed lifelike scene from memory with my eyes closed".

b800h··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
Certain types of meditation training involve specifically this faculty - the ability to hold a particular image steady in the visual imagination. Having the ability to vividly imagine a visual scene or a simple geometric shape is very much a muscle which can be trained; the brain is very plastic in this regard.
