badRNG··on GPT-Synopsys: Frontier Intelligence to Revolutionize Chip Design
Do you think that even today's frontier models are unable to handle this task?
badRNG··on Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
It's role is far closer to that of Shahed/LUCAS drones than that of FPV drones or MQ-9s.
badRNG··on Ukraine Can't Stop Russia's Jet-Powered Shahed Drone
"Drone" is an overloaded term. I'm not sure what someone means when they say "drone" (an FPV drone? an MQ-9?) When someone mentions "Shahed" I immediately know what's being talked about. It disambiguates what's being discussed.

Many also describe the US-made LUCAS drone as a Shahed clone, which clear up what role this system fills.

badRNG··on AIs can't stop recommending nuclear strikes in war game simulations
We shouldn't be the least bit surprised no human has complied so far.

If they had, then we wouldn't be having this conversation. For all we know, there may be a vast multiverse of universes some with humans and we would only find ourselves having this conversation in one of the universes where no human pressed the button.

badRNG··on If you're going to vibe code, why not do it in C?
> Speaking of vibe coding in archaic languages

Well, I think we can say C is archaic when most developers write in something that for one isn't C, two isn't a language itself written in C, or three isn't running on something written in C :)

badRNG··on LLM Inevitabilism
The OG ChatGPT released less than three years ago. Prior to that, 20 lines of code would seem wild. Does anyone remember leetcode?
badRNG··on Amazon to display tariff costs for consumers
I can't find anyone else reporting on this.
badRNG··on Italy moves to reverse anti-nuclear stance
To be very clear, the title refers to nuclear energy, which may not be immediately obvious given the current geopolitical climate.
badRNG··on Words flagged in search of current NSF awards
> Reading comprehension is shocking, not just in you but most people here. The post just said "can cause a grant to be pulled". That's entirely consistent with this list being a screening filter and somebody will look at what the grant/application is actually for.

Both the post and the comment you are replying to used the term "flagged". Best I can tell, they aren't claiming what you seem to think they are claiming.

badRNG··on Bayesian Epistemology (2022)
> we expect, with Popper, that all our best theories of fundamental physics are going to be superseded eventually

This inductive case against scientific knowledge should only serve to decrease our second-order credence in the proposition that we have assigned the highest credence to the scientific hypotheses that most closely correspond with reality. It does nothing to change the fact that, conditional on evidence we currently have, we may very well have correctly proportioned credence.

badRNG··on Allstate used GasBuddy and other apps to track driving behavior: lawsuit
This doesn't seem possible to me.

How can you correlate a Life360 or GasBuddy user with an Allstate subscriber with any level of certainty?

badRNG··on Syria flooded with Pepsi and Pringles as rulers open economy
I'd rather worry about eating too many Calories than too few.
badRNG··on Android now allows apps to block sideloading
Couldn't they just patch out that check?
badRNG··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
Is dropping a hat really comparable to chugging a whole bottle of liquor?
badRNG··on Jan: An open source alternative to ChatGPT that runs on the desktop
Looks like they are based out of Singapore
badRNG··on YouTube now requires to label their realistic-looking videos made using AI
It gives YouTube the justification to remove videos that may not be technically rule-breaking otherwise. Though, I do imagine proving that a video is AI generated will quickly become functionally impossible.
badRNG··on Prostate cancer includes two different evotypes
I think the average person can safely call "the use of neural networks in statistical work" AI.
badRNG··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
I'm fairly certain in the US you cannot legally consent to being killed.
badRNG··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
It seems like the most straightforward path here is to ban auto thefts all together.
badRNG··on How AI is changing gymnastics judging
> I wonder if having some intrinsic randomness to the AI model would help to mitigate this problem?

This would result in identical performances resulting in different scores with the difference being artificially arbitrary.

badRNG··on Oklahoma receives first "Made in Oklahoma" EV
What I think you are interpreting as a thick pillar is actually a window. It looks like a pillar in the vehicles on the sides, but is transparent in the middle vehicle.
badRNG··on Magic: The Gathering Is Turing Complete (2019)
Seems somewhat analogous to draw by repetition in Chess
badRNG··on I worked in Amazon HR and was disgusted at what I was seeing with PIP plans
There's no grounds for a lawsuit, not in the states. They can legally fire you for nearly any reason or for no reason whatsoever. All PIPs do is help the company fend off claims that the employee was fired for an illegal reason (e.g., for being a member of a protected class, retaliation, etc.)
badRNG··on John Riccitiello steps down as CEO of Unity
Whitehurst went to Rice University for Computer Science
badRNG··on An open letter to our community
Reddit, like Twitter, isn't going anywhere. It's just a worse value for the end user, and in Reddit's case the business is potentially better off for it, users be damned.
badRNG··on OSS Game Engines are increasing their stars on GitHub due to Unity's missteps
Just a reference point, Genshin Impact is 21GB on Android, COD:Mobile is now 15GB, and even Hearthstone is 4GB,
badRNG··on Unity is offering a runtime fee waiver if you switch to LevelPlay
Typically antitrust laws apply to a company using a monopoly in one industry to behave anti-competitively in another. Unity is behaving terribly, but they aren't a monopoly, and this isn't really even anti-competitive, it's just shitty. There's a greater case that they aren't properly representing the fiduciary interests of their shareholders.
badRNG··on Buy Cult of the Lamb now, cause we're deleting it on Jan first
I don't understand the humor of such a post, especially when such a course of action is currently in the cards for some developers.
badRNG··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine (2022)
A few years back, I came down with the flu and went to CVS for medicine. I purchased what I thought was a non-prescription alternative to Tamiflu. It was a bad case, and I dutifully followed the dosing instructions and took the medication throughout the whole illness. It turns out the product and the supposed function is complete homeopathic nonsense. It was sold in a medicine isle along with known "functional" cold medicine, and had some "Active Ingredient" listed on the back (similar to any other drug label.)

I spent my money on a product sold by a pharmacy that is quite literally a scam. I'm naturally a skeptical person, but I didn't think I needed to independently check whether what's on a pharmacy store's shelves is medicine or a scam. That's not my lane, I trusted that the pharmacy would only sell medicine that works.

badRNG··on Unity plan pricing and packaging updates
Yet another victim of enshittification this year. Tech sector has been hit especially hard.
