badcppdev··on Tell HN: Books Printed by Amazon
I've bought books from book shops recently which were of pretty abysmal quality. With paperbacks publishers seem to do a decent run and then any reprints are closer to photocopy quality. Often the front cover is missing some of the edges (as in the design has been enlarged and then cropped to fit the standard size).

Basically I love books but publishers are stuck in a race to the bottom with quality.

badcppdev··on How many people have ever lived on Earth?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_states_by_population_i... these guys disagree and even have some references.
badcppdev··on Make Your Renders Unnecessarily Complicated by Modeling a Film Camera in Blender [video]
Were you also left with the worry that motion blur was being neglected??
badcppdev··on Ask HN: How to navigate the world as a brain-damaged 17 year old?
Can you get your brain damage recognised as an official disability. That might assist you getting admitted into University or government jobs. I doubt you want to play the disability card but future you might forgive present you. And the best case scenario is that your brain gets better and you do great in your job.

Changing the subject you say, "When I've been able to rest for a extended period I feel almost like I used to, but everything degrades whenever I try to actually do something". People recovering from CFS or long Covid are (I think) given explicit advice to not push yourself because you will stay broken. I'm really sorry because that advice is not compatible with A levels study and the expectations that you have of what you _should_ be able to achieve.

Good luck

badcppdev··on FedEx Accused of Largest Odometer Rollback Fraud in History with Used Vans
I believe the comment that you're replying to might mean that they wouldn't notice if their odometer was totally broken and didn't increase at all. I am the same. I assume the mechanics would notice when the yearly inspection showed the same odometer reading as the previous year.
badcppdev··on The world’s empty office buildings have become a debt time bomb
To stretch the analogy there are large bombs going off and damaging the profits of the lenders who financed various loans. These will continue.

US banks weight in at $2T. The Commercial Real Estate market weighs in at 20T although only a portion of that is office buildings in cities.

badcppdev··on Generate invoices from the command line
Headline could read, "Generate a PDF for a single fixed template."

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is not something that the author would have posted to HN. It's just https://news.ycombinator.com/submitted?id=ingve submitting another post.

badcppdev··on In praise of blowing up your life
I think that the elites have established social networks. I think that's almost in the definition of elite.

Are the terms "elite" and "elites" a term with hidden meaning in the US? Is it a republican dogwhistle for democrats?

badcppdev··on Find out where you can afford to buy or rent in Great Britain
Assuming OP means, "The government will try their best to keep house price increasing" although I'm aware that the use of the word pegged is confusing.

A common opinion is that governments feel that increasing house prices will keep the voters coming in as people work their butts off to get onto the housing ladder (escalator) and then want the bubble to keep expanding as it's their main form of savings. Western society is all in on the Ponzi scheme here.

badcppdev··on Silvio Berlusconi, a Showman Who Upended Italian Politics and Culture Dies at 86
I feel that there are ways of "living life to the maximum" which should be applauded and then there is a way that impacts negatively on other people and society in general.

To quote an opinion article[0], "he faced prosecution more than 30 times on charges including embezzlement, false accounting and bribing a judge. Many cases failed to go to trial, sometimes because Berlusconi changed the law under which he had been charged."

badcppdev··on Making a single bolt for an FL car
Were you really forced to think a particular thing?
badcppdev··on Amount of work that once bought an hour of light now buys 51 years of it (2017)
"This is why I resent the laws banning incandescent lights."

and

"my 40 year old reading lamp and a few extra bulbs will last forever running a few hours a night dimmed to ~20W."

You resent the laws although they barely affect you. And it's time for me to take a break from discussion threads.

badcppdev··on Why did Usenet fail?
Totally agree with this. Why would any commercial ISP want to offer this as a service?

There was very little upside and massive potential liabilities because they were storing and supplying unmoderated content that in the very best case was pirated music and movies.

badcppdev··on Mystery math whiz and novelist advance permutation problem
Headline should have read: "Mystery math whiz and mysterious novelist advance permutation problem".
badcppdev··on Mystery math whiz and novelist advance permutation problem
Surely Permutation City by Egan is more relevant :-D
badcppdev··on World Capitals Voronoi (2014)
The funny thing about the Vatican, in addition to the misspelling, is that it highlights the flaws of Voronoi when points are close together.
badcppdev··on Poll: Do you get along with your parents?
Cool. What's funny is that I read the 'partially' option as "getting along partially with two parents" as opposed to "getting along well with one out of two parents"
badcppdev··on Poll: Do you get along with your parents?
Hi OP,

Can I ask what your answer is and why your question treats parents as a single entity?

Can you tell us more about your interaction with both your parents?

Thanks

There's a great map of the US on Wikipedia showing the Sales Tax by County ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sales_taxes_in_the_United_Stat... )

Sales Tax ranges from 0% through to 12%

badcppdev··on One million cancel broadband as living costs rise
Turns out that as you squeeze the capital out of a segment of society then they will stop being part of capitalism.
badcppdev··on 85% of jobs are filled via networking
A survey of our network suggests that 85% of jobs are filled via networking.

Ok. Not 100% sure of the statistical validity here.

badcppdev··on Should We Tax Robots?
I saw someone suggest that if companies are going to have legal rights like humans then maybe they should be taxed on income like people are. Why can't I claim rent as a tax deductable expense?
badcppdev··on Should We Tax Robots?
I am really impressed with how you take the generally accepted wisdom of, "the government is less efficient that private industry" and then add if this organisation is so robotically efficient then the logic against governments doesn't apply.

It's an interesting piece in the puzzle of how to make society work when AGI and robots take our jerbs.

badcppdev··on America Faces a Debt Nightmare
This is true in other western democracies if you look at borrowing/expenditure by political flavour.
badcppdev··on The UK’s tortured attempt to remake the internet
The UK government is good at passing laws but terrible at enforcing / enacting them. They want to be able to rule by waving a new law and and signing cheques (as long as there isn't too much due diligence involved in the contract).

The part of governing where you have to set up institutions that provide a service or material good for the voters is not their forte.

badcppdev··on If You Double-Park and You’re Rich, Should You Pay a Higher Fine?
That is an excellent suggestion although obviously needs a minimum amount because a fair number of cars being driven around have a cash value close to zero.
badcppdev··on The Windscale Fire: Britain's 'Chernobyl' (2019)
Follow up question. Can you name a country that does have a good cultural mindset for nuclear safety?

Years ago I used to naively assume the Japanese were very safety conscious and then I read details post-Fukushima that made me realise that the corporate managerial mindset rules there as well.

badcppdev··on A visual book recommender
I have a theory (after having searched for The Diamond Age) that certain very popular books are ironically not going to be close to similar books because they appear on so many varied reading lists.

There's probably a graph theory phenomena that describes what I'm thinking.
