bhj··on Killed by Apple
Is there any evidence that it was "years of regulatory and industry pressure" that did it?

When Apple introduced Lightning it was as the "modern connector for the next decade" and... that's exactly what happened.

bhj··on Prediction: Microsoft will eventually ship a Windows-themed Linux distro
They might be referring to when Apple removed subpixel antialiasing around ~2018. It caused some consternation at the time because there were still plenty of non-retina Macbook Airs in service. While it technically works, macOS really is not meant for non-high DPI displays.
bhj··on Beyond Text: On-Demand UI Generation for Better Conversational Experiences
Yes, there’s a video where Michael Okuda (with Adam Savage, I think?) recalls the TNG cast being worried about where to tap, and his response was essentially “you can’t press a wrong button“.
bhj··on Deep Musk
Hah, yes. Satire can be "deceptively" effective. I didn't create this, and naturally it was flagged for a time, but if it made someone chuckle it was worth posting on a Saturday night.

bhj··on Playstation 5 Pro Shows the Futility of the Video-Game Graphics Race
The fidelity vs. performance decision is precisely what Sony markets the PS5 Pro as eliminating. I’d also just prefer developers make 60fps the baseline, then use any additional horsepower for more frames or more real resolution.
bhj··on Apple to upgrade base Macs to 16GB RAM, starting from Apple M4 models
And each level up in RAM typically includes a bump to CPU and/or GPU core counts as well, so it is even more difficult to discern the true pricing. Annoying, but also understandable that they don't want to produce every possible combination of specs.

Don't get me started on needing to buy a 1TB+ iPad Pro to get double the RAM, though.

bhj··on Californian fed up with stolen mail sends Apple AirTag to herself to catch thief
The linked article says:

> He [Epperson] is currently conducting a multisite study in Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Louis that examines the development and implementation of deferred prosecution programs, a prosecutor-led innovation to divert people with nonviolent charges from traditional criminal justice processing.

Seems reasonable to me, and a far cry from "an explicit, open policy of not prosecuting petty crime" that is somehow country-wide.

"Apple Intelligence" was named precisely to be a marketing differentiator from any supposed "non-useful AI". It's also a hedge, in a sense.

bhj··on Apple Vision Pro U.S. Sales Are All but Dead, Market Analysts Say
> how Apple announcing they've cancelled the next Vision Pro to work on a lower cost version is squared up

Apple's made no such announcement, and the presence of the "Pro" moniker implies that a non-Pro version has always been planned.

bhj··on Apple's new AI leaves out more than 90% of current iPhone users
Yes, 25% more RAM is significant. As you said, the M1 has significantly less performance, but it has enough memory. We can infer that RAM is the deciding factor from that.
bhj··on Apple's new AI leaves out more than 90% of current iPhone users
It’s about RAM, I think. Only A17 Pro has 8GB, which we can infer is the new baseline.
bhj··on Sandy Hook families want to seize Alex Jones' social media accounts
> no more shenanigans with mail-in ballots

Ludicrous. Remember how T**** told supporters to not use mail-in ballots[0], then tried to stop the counting of mail-in ballots? [1] Or told people to vote twice? [2] Yes, one party is demonstrably more anti-democracy than the other.

I would much rather use it as a code review tool than become the code review tool. I suspect the latter will happen at a lot of companies, though.
bhj··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
You should care if your code's license is being violated by being reproduced without attribution. Undermining OSS's licenses can ultimately weaken it, and the cynic in me suspects MS is fully aware of this.

bhj··on Why do all these 20-somethings have closed captions turned on?
Even better would be for the compressor/limiter to detect whether the source is music, dialogue or explosion and adjust its parameters accordingly. Come on Apple, make it smarter!
bhj··on Why do all these 20-somethings have closed captions turned on?
Most home theater systems are in a home where the noise floor is significantly higher than a theater, which the audio mix was targeting. Dynamic range compression is often appropriate and when applied correctly improves the experience in homes.
bhj··on Why do all these 20-somethings have closed captions turned on?
> The Apple TV has a setting called "reduce loud sounds"

This does help, but at some point Apple increased the compressor’s release time so that it’s far too quiet even 10-15s after the loud transient. I wish they would make it behave more like a brickwall limiter.
