binkHN··on Telstra ends Australia's long RCS wait
Love RCS, but this, like iMessage, is a closed system.
binkHN··on Apple and a hacker's future
If it doesn't support Linux well, I'm not buying it. It's that simple.
binkHN··on Apple and a hacker's future
For all of Linux's warts, it's still better than the commercial crap coming from Microsoft and Apple that focuses on 99% of consumers. For many of us at HN, Linux is a blessing and it's only getting better.
binkHN··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
Does this mean we'll see new startups in the sneaker-net space?
binkHN··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
They want to be like Apple here and lock things down. Remember SMS? The ubiquitous text messaging protocol that had an API that developers could access? Now, the latest standard, RCS, is locked down with no API and behaves just like iMessage. Ring any bells?
binkHN··on ChatGPT Images 2.5

binkHN··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Wonderful to hear this is fixed in Nightly on Linux; thanks for the heads up. I reported this several months ago.
binkHN··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Hate that they recently implemented PWAs, but didn't bother making sure the icon for the site worked, so all PWAs have the genetic Firefox icon. The most valuable feature of PWAs is to identify a tab as a standalone app and there's no fix for this in sight.
binkHN··on Tether: iMessage, SMS, etc. on Linux
Fair, but the only other major player here, Google, has not done much better; RCS is still locked up with no API in sight.
binkHN··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Just as bad in Windows land.
binkHN··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
> Linux progressed really nicely, while MacOS deteriorated at the same rate, and it's changing the balance and the decision for me.

Same, but it's Windows that's been deteriorating fast for me. Linux has it's warts, but it's FAR better than the current commercial offerings.

binkHN··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
Yep. I think Microsoft is planning to make all their money from AI; because all their other stuff is becoming wildly enshitified and I take every opportunity that I can to look for a replacement.
binkHN··on REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500
I love how they list refueling only taking 5 minutes from anywhere, but they leave out that you can't refuel at home. The EV side should be updated to say refueling time is zero because every time I leave my home I'm already completely fueled up.
binkHN··on REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500
I hate CarPlay; yet another dumbed down interface that's inextricably linked to a phone.
binkHN··on REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500
You said it yourself, they're fundamentally suitable for most use cases. Yes, for the near future, there will be many use cases where gas is superior.
binkHN··on REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500
I don't see the big deal. If it was 100 years ago, then the name, perhaps, is effectively new.
binkHN··on Lobste.rs is now running on SQLite
lobste.rs, quite literally, allows you to filter the entire site by tags, so you only see what you want to see. I wish more sites did this.
binkHN··on Shrimple – A Simpler, Nicer Markdown
Genius! Love it! I'm going to plaster this everywhere!
binkHN··on Buried Apple feature turns an iPhone into the perfect kids' dumb phone
> All you need is a macbook

Is it really not possible to do this with a non-Apple machine?

binkHN··on DKIM2 and DMARCbis Have Landed
Thanks for this, it made me actually read the posted content, but there's a lot of content to digest and a lot MTAs will have to implement.
binkHN··on The gamers taking on the industry to stop it switching off games
I still miss Stadia.
binkHN··on Ferrari Luce
> energy efficiency matters more with EVs

This is correct, but I really don't see why Ferrari would care.

binkHN··on Ferrari Luce
> The lights gently recede when switched off, perserving the purity of the form

Wow. It's a Ferrari and the top things about the car is how the lights shut off. Way to go Ferrari.

binkHN··on Google changes its search box
It's a new frontier and people have not targeted it yet?
binkHN··on OpenBSD 7.9
Neat stuff, but this is not going to easily run the vast majority of open source software out there.
binkHN··on Google changes its search box
> When I am searching for something, I usually want to find primary sources.

And therein lies the rub; for years now Google's search results have returned useless SEO garbage. For now, it definitely seems like an LLM answer is better than what was being returned and I guess this is the reason why Google ripped it out.

binkHN··on OpenBSD 7.9
> OpenBSD focuses on auditing.

This is partially true; there are numerous other things that are done for mitigation outside of this.

binkHN··on OpenBSD 7.9
Agree. It's obvious some people are still having fun making operating systems!
binkHN··on OpenBSD 7.9
Agreed. I also like that code doesn't get committed without a quality man page.
binkHN··on OpenBSD 7.9
There was a time when Linux distributions shipped lots of things on by default; OpenBSD bucked the trend and did not. This is less of an issue nowadays.
