birthday··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
Yes. They should be banned from posting on hackernews honestly.

It's rediculous.

PS check the other comments on this thread about this behavior from them.

birthday··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
Let's all take a moment of silence for our fellow developer who fell for duck duck go's fake hiring posts.

(ps check the other comments on this thread if U don't know what I'm talking about).

birthday··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
!!

Honestly they should be banned from posting here.

They have been hiring a Senior Windows app developer for 3 years straight. LMAO.

Stop wasting everyone's time.

birthday··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2024)
Duck duck go is weird. They have been posting the same jobs for 2 years. Reading up on glassdoor, older HN comments etc people suspect they aren't really hiring. That and they make you do long writeups for the application. Pretty fishy.
birthday··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
My M1 MBP is 30 days old. Somebody please hold me while I cry.
birthday··on GitHub Copilot investigation
I wonder if it emits stable diffusion samples? ;-)
birthday··on I don’t believe in sprints
People hate on anything and everything.

It boils down to needing a form of alignment, you can't have team members running around making it up by themselves as they go.

How you achieve alignment and shipping things customers love is irrelevant, just fucking achieve it.

birthday··on I assure you, medieval people bathed (2019)
Now I want to go inside a sauna, put some clay on my body. Detox, clean, mmmm and moisturize when done. Then get into freshly washed Egyptian cotton sheets to have a good night's sleep for 8 hours.
birthday··on I assure you, medieval people bathed (2019)
What! No I loved it. Gave me a good laugh once or twice. Read it with a smile.
birthday··on .01% of Bitcoin holders hold 27% of all Bitcoin
Wait, so Bitcoin isn't being handed out equally to every person on earth?

I thought the rule is we each will be given same amount?

/s.

birthday··on .01% of Bitcoin holders hold 27% of all Bitcoin
"the inventor of bitcoin" hah. Don't believe everything you read, just like this post from OP.
birthday··on Ask HN: Is anyone else glad the crypto market is crashing?
Just from title, I can tell you are unintelligible and uninformed about crypto.

Tech stocks are crashing just as much as crypto right now. And Bitcoin is trading 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Would barely call this a "crash that's finally happening"

birthday··on UST Stablecoin Loses Dollar Peg
So in other words, banks reinvest in the next hot thing hoping to make a buck?

Seems analogous to what u say about crypto investing in the next hot new 'coin', which very well is just a proxy to people trying to build something of value.

birthday··on Apple's director of machine learning resigns due to return to office work
I think his point is that the solution to the problem is not to go back to the office, but to try develop a better social life outside of work.

It's the "root cause" fix.

birthday··on Ask HN: Have we screwed ourselves as software engineers?
The question to ask is has software gotten better? I say yes, cloud, mobile and web have exploded and are if much higher quality than they were in the past.

So I wouldn't say we've screwed ourselves.

Would we be better of if we took a different path? No one can or will ever know

birthday··on Apple M1 Ultra
OK Microsoft, it's time to get started with Visual Studio ARM support.

We need to be able to run it properly in a Windows ARM VM on the M1 chips!

birthday··on Long-term visa for remote workers
That's insane. I'd like to visit Iceland, but I think it's better to just go visit for a couple of weeks and then bail. Remote working in a cold and expensive country seems counter intuitive.

Give me word class beaches, great weather and cheap cost of living....South East Asia here I come!

birthday··on Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life
Simple, get a remote coding job and book a ticket to South East Asia. Thailand is a good start.

You will very quickly meet tonnes of people and can travel and see the world. Constant stimulation.

And if you are ever lonely while doing the above then download Tinder and start meeting people in your area.

birthday··on Tell HN: We have a responsibility to speak out against blockchain technologies
It's getting seriously annoying how unintelligent posts like this make the front page.

Has Hacker News had it's time? Possibly.

birthday··on 1k Netflix employees threaten work stoppage over Dave Chappelle
It doesn't, but the social virus that is wokeism labels you as phobic and will make you PAY for being one.

Wokeness is a nasty social virus that has infected the USA, and it slowly but surely is causing the USA to implode.

birthday··on How big tech runs tech projects and the curious absence of Scrum
That's where short cycles come into play. If something is urgent for business (and often everything is "urgent") then it can fall in the next cycle which is just 14 days away. It's rare that something is so urgent that it should disrupt your entire dev team flow and focus.

Also what happens is you end up with a never ending dev cycle where business expedites an item making the cycle a little longer, business sees the cycle is longer and thus adds in more items to be included further lengething the cycle... I think you get where this is going.

At my startup company we have suffered from just this in past, where we would have never ending dev cycles while our maintenance back logs filled up and never got worked on properly.

birthday··on No, we won’t have a video call for that
People get very confused when it comes async communication. In fact I have opted to stop calling it asynchronous communication and instead just talk about individual aspects of it and the benefits of those aspects in an applied manner at my company Over time you can slowly build people up to your level of understanding.

If you are not a team lead or similar you are fighting an exhausting and losing battle. If you are in a lead position then you have the power to show others by focusing on your own team and getting your team on that level via coaching them multiple times per week. That said, without commitment from your manager or peer teams it will be extra hard even as a team lead.

PS I'm in the coaching part right now with my team and have stopped calling it "asynchronous" communication.

birthday··on Apple and Google must allow other in-app payment systems, Korean law declares
So Apple - why don't you just make a seperate "apple verified" or Apple approved category of apps in your store? Any apps that chose to not give you 30% of all their money will just not be in that "premium" app list?
birthday··on The crypto movement is destroying itself
Why can there be no rich bitcoin holders? Sure you want coins distributed to some degree, but the mere fact that there are rich and poor bitcoin holders is natural and expected. And they will be the minority (less than 10 000).
birthday··on Reddit’s disrespectful design
These new changes are annoying as f**!
birthday··on John McAfee found dead in Spanish jail after court approves extradition to US
Well said. The guy litteraly got a TATTOO to make the point. He honestly didn't kill himself. Especially not without even tweeting one last time.

If he did, I'm sure his wife will know and will confirm this soon.

birthday··on John McAfee found dead in Spanish jail after court approves extradition to US
He litteraly got a TATTOO to say he wouldn't never do this. And do you really think he would kill himself without posting a last tweet? He is either still alive and escaped out of jail, or murdered.
birthday··on Introducing Windows 11
Indirect revenue is why this is sustainable! Good on Microsoft for making the right choice here.
birthday··on Apple admits it ranked its Files app ahead of competitor Dropbox
Just another reason we need decentralization.
birthday··on Don't Feed the Thought Leaders
Surely the problem here is the author taking every piece of advice as a requirement?! The person in charge of a project should not owe anyone an explanation for not committing to their advice nor be forced to implement all advice given to them.

Other than this, good article - I'll forever be more conscious of how I give advice going forward!
