bleachedsleet··on Interview with Andreas Kling of Serenity OS (2022)
We need more optimism in technology, more looking forward and inspiring the next generation to leave their mark; not pining for a past that’s already been here.

Nobody younger than an older millennial who grew up learning computers via Windows 95 has any interest in “retvrning” to this ethos of computing. Hell, I just described myself and even I could care less about this project other than a passing “huh that’s kinda neat” which is a rather tepid response proportional to the work that has been invested here.

There are far more interesting projects rethinking the OS right now that are actually trying their hand at unique architectures. This is just an homage to nostalgia (a technically impressive one, but still nothing inspiring here). The saddest part to me is I’m not sure the graybeards on HN will ever really get that.

bleachedsleet··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Beeper is an app that unifies all the messaging protocols you mentioned (and others) into a single app. They are not introducing another protocol.

Universal in this context is referring to the ability to use a single app across protocols rather than the ability to use a single app across platforms.

bleachedsleet··on Microsoft continues right to repair about face, makes its hardware easier to fix
An “about face” is a term commonly called in military cadence indicating the soldier should turn around, completing a 180 degree turn. So when used colloquially it means someone or some business had a complete change of mind on some topic. In this case, Microsoft has changed their approach to repairability.
bleachedsleet··on Threads, an Instagram app
Mastodon ain’t it because the exact minute a minimum wage Geek Squad tech has to explain to a sorority group the reason they can’t follow each other is because they are using different federated instances is the exact minute mastodon fails to gain any mainstream appeal. It will likely always captivate some niche of users looking for a slice of the nostalgic, techie internet (Mastodon will remain an HN darling no doubt), but a Twitter drop in, it is not.
bleachedsleet··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
Surely a website advertising a “brand new look” would have a screenshot of the interface, right?

Am I missing something?

bleachedsleet··on Is the internet killing the nude beach?
In my experience, the clubs cater to a niche. They’re effectively a kink in and of themselves and there’s a very explicit innuendo that sex is to be had on premise. Nude beaches on the other hand are a casual exploration of being clotheless. And while sexuality plays a part, it is not the focus of the experience and is often generally discouraged. I think nude beaches are cultural and thus more prone to the ebb and flow of said culture. Swingers clubs are a fetish and will exist regardless of culture as long as there are people with the kink.

bleachedsleet··on FDA Denies Authorization to Market JUUL Products
Can someone here more up to date than I on the subject give me a good jumping off place to see the real research on vaping vs smoking nicotine?

Last I heard vaping was generally considered to be safer overall because it lacked the extra carcinogens found in cigarettes, but it came out in the wash as people tend to vape far more frequently than they used to smoke and vapes are also a more direct punch of nicotine.

I’ve heard that a pipe is probably the best way to smoke if you have to do it: Tends to have a more pleasant smell to those around you, is a much purer tobacco product, and it generally isn’t inhaled. I think pipes raise the rate of various mouth cancers though.

bleachedsleet··on Mark Zuckerberg on the Lex Fridman Podcast [video]
I think it’s usually better to accept someone’s words at face value than to attempt to infer deeper meaning. Ballmer has gone on to say that was one of his biggest mistakes and history agrees.

Regardless, there’s many examples of people throughout history finding no value in seemingly pointless technologies only to be proven wrong so I believe the point the quote still stands. I suppose I could always just link to the infamous Dropbox post here instead…

bleachedsleet··on Mark Zuckerberg on the Lex Fridman Podcast [video]
> I think he also overestimates its success. He pretty much sees everyone using it for work, gaming, friend interactions, etc. I just can't see it being so ubiquitous.

bleachedsleet··on Ask HN: Is the past disappearing on the web?
> It seems to me that its become standard practice on marketing type blogs for corporate websites to remove the date from their posts.

Worse still, I’ve encountered sites that automatically update their edit dates to be current as a way to optimize SEO. I’ve found articles with decades old information claiming to have been written mere hours or days prior.

bleachedsleet··on Computers as I used to love them
Oh good, more out of touch drivel on the front page of HN so people can gently reminisce about the good ol’ days. This article is absurd, from premise to conclusion, and it took me a moment to realize it’s not a satire of itself.

1. Dropbox and Syncthing are two different tools with two different use cases targeting two different kinds of users. I doubt they even see themselves in competition as surely the users are quite different. I stopped caring about direct sync when workstation computers were no longer the hub of my computer use…

2. …seriously it’s a mobile first world and you expect people to take Syncthing seriously as a Dropbox replacement?

3. The author is mad about things like “accounts” and “2FA” and “Gatekeeper”. Sounds like they should go back to XP. I’m sure it works the way they used to love. Once again, comparing modern best practices with your power user impatience and impetuousness doesn’t prove your point in any capacity.

4. This assumed power user is complaining about making an alias for the iCloud folder? And uses spaces in pathnames? If you’re a programmer this isn’t unusable because if you’re a programmer you should know better. I agree with the author that the iCloud folder should be more visible on the CLI, but unusable? Strange how I’ve been using it daily. Guess I’m not a True Programmer.

5. What Dropbox UI is the author complaining about in the “Power Mode” section? A file picker directly copied from MacOS Finder but with checkboxes? This has to be a troll.

6. The author is mad about calendar sync because apparently they can’t read basic copy on the Dropbox website that never markets the app as a “FILE SYNCHRONIZATION” service (boomer-level emphasis theirs). I don’t use Dropbox either because it turns out I don’t need a full teamwork collaboration tool - what Dropbox actually markets themselves as. This is a platform of work related tooling, not simply “commercial Syncthing.” I imagine calendar tools as being part of this (clearly) stated goal.

7. “Wait there’s more!” Please no. I think that’s quite enough.

Everyone can like what they like, but this is encroaching on “old man yells at cloud” territory.

bleachedsleet··on Ask HN: Who wants to help promote RSS?
This is a feature of HN which seems to be increasingly populated by an older crowd that enjoys pining for an imagined golden age of technology. I’m in the same boat: I love plain text, RSS, and Vim as much as the next guy, but the trend of reminiscing about the superiority of ancient tech rather than musing on the future and how people actually use computers these days is woefully out of touch.

I also like mechanical calculators, horse drawn plows, and fine tinsmithing all for the skills and craftsmanship that go into each. And yet I wouldn’t think to start campaigning to bring back animal powered plowing. The new generation of technologists and programmers entering the workforce doesn’t give a damn about your ugly RSS feeds or your plain text productivity workflow or your finely tuned EMacs config and I think that mindset shift is going to be irksome to a lot of established old heads.

bleachedsleet··on Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
> there's no regulation, auditing or government backed guarantees / insurance on the exchanges.

I consider this a feature, not a bug.

bleachedsleet··on Apple charges 2X more to fix a Steel Watch as the same aluminium one
I worked for a time at an Apple Authorized repair shop and watches are not repaired. They’re inspected for warrantable damage, sent to Apple, inspected again for other warrantable damage on the internals, then replaced if authorized. You’re getting a discounted watch, not an inflated repair.
