This is the same as quitting smoking or just not thinking about an elephant. You can almost never cease/stop doing something, yet you can almost always displace it with something else.
(Disclaimer 'altacc suggests: I do have kids.)
[Science fiction writer Bruce] Sterling was using the term specifically to describe the hairshirt green lifestyle that is driven by eco-anxieties. For hairshirt-green types, life is all about saving water, recycling, composting, reducing eco-footprints and various other behaviors marked by a kind of fearful, non-generative retreat from living. Permanent existential hibernation.
Sterling's rule of thumb for spotting acting-dead behaviors is a great one: if it's something your dead great-grandfather can do better than you, it's a case of acting dead. Your dead great-grandfather uses no water or plastic, and is actually recycling himself as we speak, not just his possessions. Try and top that.
But acting dead goes beyond hairshirt-green behaviors. While spartan frugality is a virtue, when it becomes the entire purpose of your life, there's a problem. For a portion of the dying American middle class, frugality has turned into a life purpose.

But also plenty of places are nothing like Heinlein's hometown so this is far from universal.
Speaking of treatment, do you also find LLMs awesome at getting you over the hump? For example, if I need to gather information across emails, chats, and documents for some form... odds are it will get done at the very last moment or later. But now that the clanker will do all that for me and put the first draft for fixes, I do it at the earliest possible moment.
Everything works: you get the native view of subagents, you can upload files and images, fork threads, etc.
The massive upside is that the actual work happens on the server so you can close your laptop and it will continue plus it will not fry your thighs. The advantage over sessions (which I haven't tried but theoretically sound) is that you can configure Claude's environment on the server however you like. Give it any tools you need, ssh access to other machines, sudo, whatever.
The only downside is that every new project requires a setup step on the server (to add the systemd service) where you will develop it since Claude can only handle one server per directory. Claude will handle this step however if you give it ssh access to your server.
The machines show up nicely in Claude Desktop/Mobile/Web, and repos/projects are in a dropdown. Unless you work on very many projects at the same time, this setup is golden.
Meanwhile people who used to build some useless social media stuff are making high-tech weapons which stop Russia in Ukraine despite it being like four times smaller. Kinda nice when you're next in line.
Now, on top of all that, capitalism is giving me a magical silicon assistant that codes and drives all these wonders of the Internet previously developed. And yeah, they're made by cultists from Anthropic and OpenAI psychopaths. Yet through the market competition, they fight each other over who can cater to me more. Dance monkey, here's a $100 bill.
So far, capitalism just can't stop winning.
Not because there aren't many honest people driven by what's best for their craft or profession, there are, but these are not the kinds of people who find being a political party's talking head on a morning show, or even reviewing their political program and schmoozing with the apparatchiks, gratifying.
Also, a lot of lobbying happens without money changing hands. Politicians need professional bodies and local communites for a variety of reasons. From staging campaign stops through having experts to maintain a semblance of merit all the way to filling goverment positions and actually exercising power once they win elections. Thus these various groups gain influence.
The only difference is that LLMs can code way better than they can write. Probably thanks to software being more and more immediately testable.
There are many negative externalities of mass migration that are borne by the locals while benefits mostly accrue to a handful of... shysters.
I have a local repo with my home lab mapped out and Claude manages servers via ssh. It is completely fine with using my ssh keys and pass.
Claude will also drive the browser. After a couple times, it will even offer to do something via the browser where no API or other machine interface exists.
And yes, the digital drudgery has definitely reached a point where this is worth the risk.
IQ is almost entirely hereditary so "using your brain" has no impact on it unless you're using it for mating.
We refuse to confront the problem head on so it instead comes up everywhere. A lot of things are like this. Repression only takes you so far.
* adblocking is simple both in browser and on the dns level,
* revanced youtube allows you to even skip sponsored segments, regular ads don't deserve a mention, you will see none,
* reddit hasn't been good in forever, it's why we're here,
somehow Twitter/Spotify/YouTube/TikTok algos work just fine for me with this one simple trick: I watch the good stuff, and skip/block/mute the not-so-good stuff. This works less well on LinkedIn but it's a Microsoft product, what did you expect, really.
If you're like me, ie. on Hacker News daily, the modern Internet is a never ending series of wonders with virtually none of the inconvenience. And if on some absolute edge, you must use a website that sucks, both Claude and ChatGPT can drive a browser nowadays.
