blntechie··on Herdr has released native app
Just termius + tmux works for me on my Android phone and iPad. I have a ntfy topic to alert from Pi when it needs something.
blntechie··on Plex vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild to drop a cryptominer
I do run it open to the outside through cloudflare tunnels. I don't want to connect my TVs to tailscale every time to play a movie.
blntechie··on DeepSeek search and fetch – $0.75 per 1000 successful requests
In my experience, for coding, they are pretty much SOTA. Maybe not for other sciences and problem solving.
blntechie··on Mornings and nights no longer exist at 47C: A day in the hottest place in India
This is a lazy comment.

India's TFR just reached 1.9 which is below replacement rate.. The state I live in with 60m people has 1.5-1.6 TFR and still going down rapidly towards Japan and South Korea level of population decline. This will be seen in the coming decades.

But you can't just go and delete the billions of people already born and are living. You can't change demographics in a day or even a decade.

blntechie··on Show HN: Minimalist editor that lives in browser, stores everything in the URL
This is so cool!! The responsiveness of the page is so much better than any maps app I have used.
blntechie··on The two versions of Parquet
What does DuckDB mean by query engines here? Something like Trino?
blntechie··on Bluesky is on the verge of overtaking Threads in all the ways that matter
I can't say user metrics but Google Photos came out of Google+ and it is a massively successful product.

Hangouts (now Meet?) was also a product out of Google+ but considering GChat (the xmpp version) existed before, it was kind of a step backwards.

I think Google Local Guide also has some parts of Google+, not sure.

blntechie··on Ask HN: What's Your Experience with eSIMs?
I love the convenience of physical SIMs. Will hate the day when I don't have a choice but to 'upgrade' to eSIMs.

I have a phone with dual physical SIM card slots. I can go to any country in the world, buy a SIM, put it in, and am up and running. eSIM provisioning at airports is barely available in few coubtries.

I broke the display of my phone? Easy, remove the SIM and put it in a spare phone and I can still make and receive calls.

blntechie··on India's $45B Startup Implosion Puts Tech Future in Doubt
Byju's was perplexing as almost every customer of theirs and the target customers knew what Byju's was doing except those in the board, the VC analysts and LPs.
blntechie··on India's $45B Startup Implosion Puts Tech Future in Doubt
> red tape

I would attribute red tape to only fintech companies. Ideally edtech should have had redtape considering how much rampant these VC funded companies ran riot.

Also, SV has these red tapes too. Bloom Tech -> California BoE anyone? Red tapes are not always a bad thing for the consumers, maybe for those following grow fast and break model.

blntechie··on Should I use JWTs for authentication tokens?
I have used OAuth2 with and without JWTs as bearer tokens and pretty much used them the same way. JWT helps with fetching the user details without having to hit the DB/backend, and that's basically was the only difference to me.

I believe the issues he is describing is more OAuth2 rather than JWT.

blntechie··on Show HN: I made an app that consolidated 18 apps (doc, sheet, form, site, chat…)
Wow, I have never been more impressed with any other Show HN before. The sheer number of features and platforms you have covered and also keeping to some core engineering principles at the same time is extremely impressive. I will be trying this product for sure and wish you all the best with this app.
blntechie··on F-Droid: Android FOSS app store
That's how Google Analytics started.
blntechie··on ELI5: Why are 11 and 12 called eleven and twelve and not oneteen and twoteen?
2300 - 23 hundred is a spoken informal thing. Two thousand three hundred is another common usage which might be the 'proper' way.
blntechie··on Witch – macOS window switcher replacement
I have been a long time MacOS user and the app/window switching never made any sense to me. Windows and Linux just does it better.
blntechie··on Deleting 80% of the marketing footprint of IBM.com
Worse in multilingual countries. The websites somehow think I speak the most prominent language in the country when I can't understand a word of it and I prefer English and my own language.
blntechie··on A digital payments revolution in India
How is it different from any digital payment? Many European countries and the US has been doing digital transactions for like 2 decades now. How was it not authoritarian then but suddenly when the Asian people do it, it's a way to track everything people does and not the simplest explanation which is it makes transactions easier?
blntechie··on Tiny, cheap smart speakers unlocked the rise of digital payments in India
It's 200 Rs/mo as per a shopkeeper I talked to. It's pretty affordable for many shops as it cuts down on fraud a bit and they see utility in it.
blntechie··on Tiny, cheap smart speakers unlocked the rise of digital payments in India
It's just not screenshots. Initially the payment apps added moving icons/pictures to differentiate screenshots with actual payment confirmation screens. As a response, some people made specialized apps which dynamically recreated the same exact payment confirmation screen of the popular apps with moving parts, fake transaction id etc.
blntechie··on Starlink internet is going from rural savior to unreliable luxury
Similarly Netherlands is not even as big as most provinces/states of the bigger countries where internet wiring challenges exists. So not sure what is the point of bringing up the Netherlands.
blntechie··on The drama in trying to convert election PDFs to Spreadsheets
What was the final result numbers from the transcription?
blntechie··on Amazon employees express dismay, anger about sudden return-to-office policy
Honestly, many of the employees and scenarios quoted in the article comes out like they were because of people making decisions without forethought. Do note they are still earning more than 95% of the population and will come out as entitled for readers who are not really attuned to the tech scene.
blntechie··on 50% rejection rate for iPhone casings produced in India shows Apple’s challenge
Weird cultural attacks and criticisms here. I'm sure everyone here started as a Principal Engineer calibre engineers straight out of college.

It will be a fair criticism if this same factory is having same quality output 2-3 years down the line.

blntechie··on 50% rejection rate for iPhone casings produced in India shows Apple’s challenge
If you are within customs rules, you don't have to pay anything. Else pay the right duty based on the original invoice you should be carrying with you. I have taken TVs, laptops, iPhones, game consoles and have never been bothered by customs.
blntechie··on Coinbase halts operations in Japan
Probably India must be their short lived launch. They did a launch party and announcement but their fiat payment integration was pulled by the central bank and they never actually launched.
blntechie··on CircleCI says hackers stole encryption keys and customers’ source code
This is a super critical hack, looks really bad for CircleCI. But I don't see any negative news much elsewhere. They will move on.

Also, maybe that localised build system running on an old server for each team seem to be not a bad idea to reduce the blast radius when eventually a hack happens. These providers are supposed to be the gatekeepers and experts who one leaves the tedious and critical work to. If they are just being a leaky cauldron, maybe not bad to cook in my old pot at home.

blntechie··on Sydney CBD is bringing back pedestrian “beg buttons”
Timers are very common in Asia. But the countdown timers for Green to Yellow could be dangerous as most people seeing the timer about to be zero from far and speeds up instead of slowing down. Recently many of the traffic signals in my city have removed countdown timers for Green to Yellow and has kept timer only for Red to Green change.
blntechie··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
Doxxing is a fair policy and sharing real time location to be included in the doxxing policy is fair. No disagreements there.

Elon backtracking from the absolute free speech is fair to be mocked and laughed at as 'I said so'.

blntechie··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
Completely fair banning them over policy violation. But Elon promised 'absolute' free speech when he took over? No one would be complaining about these bans if not for the hypocrisy. I have never seen this two face stand.

Elon is now understanding the risk and fallacy of absolute free speech when some rando stalked his family. But glossed over when others shouted at the same.

blntechie··on Show HN: Readwise Reader, an all-in-one reading app
Looks neat. The beta launch post is really well written and appreciate the segment on pricing.

I'd appreciate if you would consider regional pricing at some point. As it's priced today, it's more expensive than all the streaming services I use (including Netflix, Disney+). I can certainly understand why regional pricing is not for everyone and its drawbacks but just wanted to ask.
