blueberry··on How WikiLeaks threatens transparency
It sounds nonsense to me to blame Wikileaks for making transparency opponents make more opposed to transparency. When you point out a problem, sometimes the people who don't want this problem to be solved will take even more radical measures to make sure it is kept secret. Giving up because of this is like giving up fighting terrorism because your actions can anger terrorists and they might kill more people. Also it's not clear from the current leaks whether they would have been prevented if there was less transparency between governmental bodies.
blueberry··on Why I’m giving up on Europe and moving my startup to China
> How do all the Chinese/Korean/Indian people in the US do it?

A lot of those come via green card lottery. That still means it's hard.

blueberry··on Why I’m giving up on Europe and moving my startup to China

In comparison, I landed in china on thursday. Today is
monday, and I have a fully furnished office (with furniture
I selected myself), an assistant and 25 interviews with
programmers scheduled for this week. The business papers
have been submitted, bank accounts have been setup.
How much money did you need to spend for all that?
blueberry··on Why doesn't Quora use PostgreSQL
who uses MySQL as anything but a glorified key-value store when reaching large sizes?

My assumption is both Quora and Facebook use MySQL this way. While you are right that this is not using it as a real database, I want to know if PostgreSQL is deployed in a similar setup at all. Most of the people (including you) don't take into account the fact that there are many cases where MySQL (used as a KV store) proved to work, while I have never heard of such huge PostgreSQL deployments. If this was a general discussion regarding MySQL and PostgreSQL I could understand that, however, I think the post is more about whether to choose MySQL or PostgreSQL if you are going to use it as a KV store.

blueberry··on Why doesn't Quora use PostgreSQL
Those who commented in favor of postgres: What are some of the biggest deployments of postgres? Facebook has a gargantic deployment of MySQL and it just works. The author of the answer on Quora mentions reliable scalability as the most important factor for their MySQL choice on another answer here: http://bit.ly/dm6HtQ. What is the biggest system that postgres is deployed in?
blueberry··on Why doesn't Quora use PostgreSQL
I'd say most important is LAMP and that unfortunately Postgres starts with the letter P.

That would be their end as a troll, b/c vandalizing open source projects is way beyond troll-ness, it's evil.
blueberry··on [dead]
The error that shows up on the page actually has stack trace written on top of it.
blueberry··on Apple Takes on Droid X With Latest Smartphone Antenna Video
It's just less simpler than the home screen with a nice background, however, there is no reason why anyone would open the dialpad to carry this experiment.
blueberry··on Developing and Deploying a Simple Clojure Web Application
I agree with this, and yes I used the word 'clojure' to mean any frameworks/web servers/middleware that can be used to code in clojure. Just like when people say "php is good for web programming" most of them actually mean php, apache, mysql and their favorite framework.
blueberry··on Apple Takes on Droid X With Latest Smartphone Antenna Video
Good point. My first thought was that "why would the keyboard be open by default?"
blueberry··on Apple Takes on Droid X With Latest Smartphone Antenna Video
'So. Why is data a "poor sport"?' Because it's not data, it's just some hand holding a phone and the bars are dropping. No explanation whatsoever.
blueberry··on CreatePDF.in: My two hour website to pdf project
Oh, OK that makes sense. Never heard of that before:)
blueberry··on Developing and Deploying a Simple Clojure Web Application
No, I didn't gloss over the details with the possible exception of deployment to EC2. Most of the stuff you listed are a prerequisite to web development. For most other languages/frameworks database connection would be included too.
blueberry··on Developing and Deploying a Simple Clojure Web Application
Are you serious? 45 LOC is not a good metric btw, why are you omitting all that boilerplate configuration. Any reasonable tutorial on PHP/python/RoR would build something more sophisticated more concisely. Here is a python tutorial: http://www.turbogears.org/2.0/docs/main/ToscaWidgets/forms.h...
blueberry··on Developing and Deploying a Simple Clojure Web Application
If this is an easy way to create a web app that adds two numbers on Clojure, I'd say Clojure is not ready for web development yet.
blueberry··on CreatePDF.in: My two hour website to pdf project
It doesn't even work with style sheets. Can you specify what it works with?
blueberry··on Dammit, MySQL
Name one database that won't have scaling issues for sure. Scaling DB-wise is not only a good problem, it is inevitable if you constantly grow.
blueberry··on Wanna have zillions of google profiles?
I said you can _crawl_ in the sense that it's technically possible & easy. Also I don't think you'd get into trouble if you use it for your own research and not disclose your results.
blueberry··on How We Got Rejected from YC and Moved into the SpeakerCave
Is there a technical reason preventing the big guys (youtube/yahoo /vimeo etc.) from developing this kind of thing? I always thought running voice recognition on user submitted videos would require massive infrastructure. How are you guys planning to solve that? Congrats & best of luck with the rest!
blueberry··on Wanna have zillions of google profiles?
browse through the family names at your convenience: http://facebook.com/family Search the public statuses of Facebook users (this is done via the API): http://youropenbook.org/
blueberry··on Wanna have zillions of google profiles?
I don't think it's a big deal but I guess the author wanted to point out an easy way to crawl this public info. There are similar ways to crawl public Facebook profiles too, so it's really not a big deal.
blueberry··on Wanna have zillions of google profiles?
As of this comment it's exactly 3278. I wonder why you didn't bother doing 3-4 more trials before writing the comment :) http://www.gstatic.com/s2/sitemaps/sitemap-3278.txt

And how is this news? Google has been trying to be too many things at once and failing in many of them for at least 4 years now. Also it was a very shallow blog post, an itemized list of what the author dislikes about the current status of Google services would do; he didn't care to elaborate any of them anyway.
blueberry··on StackVM running within StackVM
+1 quiet. You might have really good speakers. Always safer to make the videos louder, the user can always tune it down but can't tune it up beyond his/her speaker's capability.
blueberry··on StackVM running within StackVM
Do I interpret it incorrectly or do you guys deliberately use VM terminology to describe your product? When you connect to a virtual machine from a browser you are not launching a VM, neither are you running any windows machines on StackVM, you are connecting to windows VMs through StackVM. Other than that, cool demo, thanks.
blueberry··on Facebook now has 500 million users
Based on real life experience, IMO some people would rather extend the definition of "fad" to include Google and Microsoft than stop calling Facebook a "fad".
blueberry··on Facebook now has 500 million users
Half a billion is a nice number, but the number isn't what really matters here

Right, what matters is the bigger number, 25 billion, which is what Facebook is worth.

blueberry··on On the scalability of Linus
While I agree with what you are saying, your analogy is not completely accurate. Switching GUI is nowhere near switching the kernel in terms of risk and the hassle that might come with the change. The main reasons for inertia are the linux servers and the development stack that's built on top of linux servers. Most deployed Linuces have neither X.Org nor XFree86 installed on them.
blueberry··on On the scalability of Linus
There might be comparable forks to Linux out there right now. Does anyone switch? No. Linux is the windows of Unices. You can't dethrone it just by coming up with a better fork.
