bobcostas55··on Immich v2.0.0 – First stable release
I really like Immich, although recently their android app randomly decided to go out of sync with my library and stop backing up automatically :/
bobcostas55··on Overengineering my homelab so I don't pay cloud providers
I built mine around an N150 board off of aliexpress. 6 SATA slots, 4x2.5G ethernet, 2x m.2 slots. Find a cheap second-hand case, a bit of RAM and you're ready to go. It's got hardware transcoding, handles 4K without breaking a sweat. And it consumes 6W!
bobcostas55··on Mira Murati’s AI startup Thinking Machines valued at $12B in early-stage funding
Theranos famously didn't manage to raise VC money, the funding all came from people like Rupert Murdoch and the Walton family.
bobcostas55··on The role of the University is to resist AI
It's bad on purpose to make you click.
bobcostas55··on Blue Prince is a roguelike puzzle masterpiece
I completely agree with this evaluation, I dropped it as well fairly early on.
bobcostas55··on Kevin Langdon's 'Omni' IQ test
People with aphantasia are actually _better_ at mental rotation tests! Lack of visualization is no obstacle to the brain, which of course has all sorts of interesting implications.

bobcostas55··on The Marshmallow Test does not reliably predict adult functioning
All psychological traits are highly heritable. See eg https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4739500/
bobcostas55··on LINQPad – The .NET Programmer's Playground
Everything search is the most befuddling one. The delta between Everything and the built-in Windows search can only be described as monumental. A vast gulf. They do not even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence. Just fucking buy the thing and integrate it, what could they possibly be thinking?
bobcostas55··on DNA confirms there IS a big cat roaming the British countryside
Nature, uh, finds a way.
bobcostas55··on Adobe is buying videos for $3 per minute to build AI model
You know what, I _would_ download a car.
bobcostas55··on Meta's Onavo VPN removed SSL encryption of competitor's analytics traffic
Seems like a straight-forward CFAA violation, no?
bobcostas55··on Cormac McCarthy's Sideline: Freelance copy editor
From Stella Maris:

>Cantor, Gauss, Riemann, Euler. Hilbert. Poincaré. Noether. Hypatia. Klein, Minkowski, Turing, von Neumann. Hardly even a partial list. Cauchy, Lie, Dedekind, Brouwer. Boole. Peano. Church is still alive. Hamilton, Laplace, Lagrange. The ancients of course. You look at these names and the work they represent and you realize that the annals of latterday literature and philosophy by comparison are barren beyond description.

If anything, I would say the book suggests he was cynical about literature rather than science!

bobcostas55··on Jorge Luis Borges and the Labyrinths of Copyright
Having read the Di Giovanni translations, I find them inferior to the Irby/Yates ones. Hurley is the worst.
bobcostas55··on Show HN: A job application tracker with company reviews, recruiter autoresponder
Without a second offer in hand, you're always going to be in a very bad negotiating position when it comes to salary. Avoiding the stress of multiple interviews is almost certainly costing you tens of thousands per year. Over your entire career we're talking about millions of euros.
bobcostas55··on Douglas Hofstadter changes his mind on Deep Learning and AI risk
If a third alternative existed that would be a meaningful objection.
bobcostas55··on The NVIDIA AI Red Team
A ~1sd difference in average g at the national level is the difference between not having stable electricity, and being an uber-rich technological wonderland. That suggests that even if the curve is bending, it's not a very hard bend.
bobcostas55··on Block loses 20% of value as Hindenburg Research alleges fraud
Are you equally surprised that it's legal to go long and then talk your book?
bobcostas55··on Twitter Blue breaks EU consumer law by showing prices without tax
The distortionary effect of VAT is much better than taxing income. If you're worried about its relative impact on poor people you can just redistribute more (which EU countries obviously do).
bobcostas55··on Robot is doing the work of an army of Renaissance sculptors, according to owner
It has trouble with the Caesar cipher (and other stuff like basic math) because of the BPE tokenization. The easiest way to bypass it is to ask it to write a function that does what you want it to do, it's obvious it understands the Caesar cipher.
bobcostas55··on Art Made with Artificial Intelligence Wins at State Fair
Sing, O prompt engineer, of the artstation anime waifus
bobcostas55··on ‘Why am I talking to 10 guys?’ The rise and fall of dating apps
>mandatory 1-3 days chatting

This is not a real thing. In fact once you go above 2-3 back and forth messages your chances of actually going on a date start to go down.

bobcostas55··on Unconscious bias in media interviews with female top managers
I don't really understand on what basis they're making the claim that these differences are due to unconscious biases. The entire thing seems to be completely made up.
bobcostas55··on The Collapse of Complex Societies (Book Review)
>One that he doesn’t discuss much but that is particularly pertinent to today, is the accretion of laws and regulations.

Tainter does discuss this, and rejects it (incorrectly imo).

bobcostas55··on DALL·E now available in beta
Well, it's a problem for the ideology.
bobcostas55··on Designing the Characters of 'Cowboy Bebop'
>It's a beautifully shot show

It so isn't. It's got that ugly flat daytime soap lighting that ruins so many of these streaming shows, I guess because they think they can save money by not paying for a good dp.

bobcostas55··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier
IKEA says the fornuftig is only for 8-10 square meter rooms. How "real" is that limitation?
bobcostas55··on Building a Budget Homelab NAS Server
Doesn't ZFS have a mechanism for periodically checking for and correcting bit rot?
bobcostas55··on Building my first mechanical keyboard
The days of soldering are far behind us, pretty much everything these days is hot-swappable. It sounds like keychron would be a good fit for you.
bobcostas55··on Building my first mechanical keyboard
The price difference is pretty wild, hard to make an investment like that without being able to try it first.
