It's a license agreement, not copyright. I give you this thing under certain conditions you agree to. That's not simply about copyright. You agreed in a contract not to do something. Some contracts aren't enforceable but there has to be some major reason. By default people and businesses are free to agree to contract terms they want to.

How do I pay Google for Gemini without spying?
bonoboTP··on Tell HN: Gemini trains on chat history, even for subscribers (personal accounts)
Payment doesn't guarantee anything tho. We are right now in a thread about a paid product by Google still spying.
bonoboTP··on Tell HN: Gemini trains on chat history, even for subscribers (personal accounts)
It's no wtf. Google is an ad company so they want all your data to target ads at you.
bonoboTP··on Tell HN: Gemini trains on chat history, even for subscribers (personal accounts)
You cannot opt out, except by using only temporary chats. You cannot keep your chat histories visible to yourself only. If you want to access your previous chats, you cannot opt out of human review and training models on your chats.
bonoboTP··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
The people who set the deadlines are trying to stay competitive so there are contracts with clients so your salary can come from somewhere.

It's coordination problems and large scale distributed action, not some moral character of how serious the people are. Effort is not fungible. To make php good, you only have to act at one point, in a localized way, at the php foundation. To ditch php, you have to act in a coordinated way across any resource strapped companies and individuals. Just see how hard it was to ditch Python 2 or how ipv4 is still not ditched.

Trying to understand underlying reasons and incentive structures is much more productive and useful than simply venting about the worse moral character and seriousness of people in one industry vs the next. Curiously, the grass seems always greener - when you ask people in other industries, you'll often hear endless complaints about the state of things there too.

bonoboTP··on Why Don't We Live in an Art Nouveau World?
I guess the critique of the trad critique is that there is no single clear bright line between beautiful buildings everywhere and some sudden arrival of gray boxes everywhere. The beautiful buildings often had conflicting ideologies behind them, it was not a static landscape of eternal proportion and principle that was one day toppled when some evil people decided to bring misery to all. Of course this is an exaggeration.

The whole thing is anyway an ideological thing today as it was back then. The online trad architecture aesthetic is associated with the right wing, who see it as a return to order from today's decadence and overly guilt ridden elite zeitgeist. Urbanism and human scale architecture is associated with certain parts of the left who admire Nordic and Western European social democracies like the Netherlands and Denmark against what they see as the hegemonic capitalist state of the US.

The point is, architecture doesn't live in a vacuum, it is inextricably linked to political and ideological tribalism, and choices in architecture are expressions of what other tribe one rejects and consciously differentiates from etc.

bonoboTP··on Net worth for people aged 30–33 in the U.S.
The kind of home people seem to want and the kind of level of lifestyle is out of control and never ever was possible anytime anyplace as a default.
bonoboTP··on Net worth for people aged 30–33 in the U.S.
It's true that being very poor or uneducated is harder in the US. If you're an educated professional, the US is way ahead in terms of opportunity, savings etc. over the rest of the world. Yes, you have college debt, but the salaries are much much higher than places like Germany or France, so even with paying that, you're way ahead. How many people move to the US from Europe and how many vice versa? Sure you find the odd example but it's not a real trend.

Both sound cool and "like, the future, maan" while smoking weed, otherwise nothing in common.
bonoboTP··on Net worth for people aged 30–33 in the U.S.
The situation is super good, objectively. Much better than most of Western Europe except a few outliers like Switzerland maybe. And infinitely better than Eastern Europe and the even poorer countries. You have no idea how good you have it. Maybe not as good as some fake idealized back in the day, but very good. It's just that reality can't keep up with growing expectations. Okay there was like a brief window after ww2 when the US did exceptionally well because it was shielded from the war by two oceans while the rest of the developed world was in rubbles. But that state of things couldn't last.
bonoboTP··on Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen
No, not like that at all.

Seems to be mostly around the input or the output layer not the deep bowels of the nets. Near the input layers, neural nets basically do template matching, so recognizing the paddle, the circle etc is not that surprising. The innards is where it gets more interesting and that's not so clear whether Astra can interpret.

Ferenc Puskás the Hungarian footballer had grown up with the nickname Öcsi, meaning little brother. Later when he got old he was referred to as Puskás Öcsi bácsi, meaning Uncle Little Brother Puskás...

"Populist" is whatever the other side wants. "Nuanced and complex" is my side. My point is, "muh boomers" is a pretty populist reddit-brained take.
bonoboTP··on Perspectiva Kogui: A message on artificial intelligence from the Kogui people
Is it the tribe or basically Americans who grew up on Pocahontas and Avatar and larp this kind of stuff for clout based on their 4.75% ancestry from this tribe plus getting some deals with the more real tribal people that if they put their name on the nonsense statement then they get some material benefits etc.?
bonoboTP··on Building an AI-native engineering org
Ultimately your paycheck exists through deals that involve those boxes on checklists. It doesn't simply materialize out of thin air. If there are no deals, it doesn't matter how robust and elegant the architecture is.
bonoboTP··on Perspectiva Kogui: A message on artificial intelligence from the Kogui people
It's catering to this American esoteric view of thinking that indigenous peoples are some kind of magic elves or ents safeguarding the world since eternity in perfect harmony with nature and whatnot. It's weird but it's a new American religion. There is a need to imagine that some mirror world exists with pure hearted people somewhere else.

With paper I can put two or three pages side by side. Imagine needing 2 or 3 synchronized e-readers like that. And I can immediately draw on them, not worrying about what mode I'm in, what brush is selected blablabla. I can flip back and forth with my fingers etc. Downside is no search, no zoom no copy paste.

I guess you mean that now people make forms or documents then wither email them or they print sign and scan and send the same. Instead they could have some ERM system that supports the same functionality by just filling forms in the web ui, clicking approve buttons etc. Problem is those won't support the exact thing they need and a docx is editable to say just what you need (getting the erm provider to add a new checkbox is expensive and needs ongoing maintenance subscriptions), and often wet ink signatures are required by law.
bonoboTP··on What shall I teach my son?
I didn't think that was possible, but there's always something new to learn.
bonoboTP··on What shall I teach my son?
I sometimes see parents doing this "always rationally explain everything to the small kid and expect them to simply follow and accept the logic" tactic in public and it seems... Ineffective.
bonoboTP··on What shall I teach my son?
I'm with Zizek on this stuff.

> “Imagine you or me, I’m a small boy. It’s Sunday afternoon. My father wants me to visit our grandmother. Let’s say my father is a traditional authority. What would he be doing? He would probably tell me something like, “I don’t care how you feel; it’s your duty to visit your grandmother. Be polite to her and so on.” Nothing bad about this I claim because I can still rebel and so on. It’s a clear order.

> But what would the so-called post-modern non-authoritarian father do? I know because I experienced it. He would have said something like this, “You know how much your grandmother loves you, but nonetheless I’m not forcing you to visit her. You should only visit her if you freely decide to do it.” Now every child knows that beneath the appearance of free choice there is a much stronger pressure in this second message. Because basically your father is not only telling you, you must visit your grandmother, but you must love to visit it. You know he tells you how you must feel about it. It’s a much stronger order.”

But you did impose the rule, it didn't come from outside so you misled her.
bonoboTP··on What shall I teach my son?
Did it survive the replication crisis? File drawer effect? Social science produces whatever results are prestigious in the current intellectual academic zeitgeist. I have zero trust in any of it and will trust a random granny's life experience more.
bonoboTP··on What shall I teach my son?
If you're an asshole, this stuff won't help. If you're a balanced person, obsessing over what words to use will just make you more anxious and worried and will do more harm to the kid than if you're just relaxed and say or phrase something in a way the parenting experts and TikTok therapists deem a nono.
