brailsafe··on Jobless tech workers are being left out of San Francisco's AI boom
Well... you're not necessarily studying for most technical interviews in the same way that you would study for a test. You're first taking a guess at what you'll be tested on, how you'll be graded, and often how much time to spend on something, then you're walking into the rest of them. A very volatile chance at every step that isn't always influenced by every former step is indeed not technically the same as a lottery, but in an abstract sense it's not so different.

What's closer to an actual lottery is getting your resume picked. Than you get to study and participate in the blind dog race

Ya it's admittedly pretty rough here in Canada, at least on the west coast. At least it's beautiful, less toxic, free healthcare, better protections for rights. The single legit invitation to interview I've received was for some SF bs startup that was heavily emphasizing being AI first in every aspect, constant pivoting, calls, unclear what the actual product was but it reeked like garbage.

If it weren't for healthcare, despite the lack of income for presumably the next year, I assume I'd be screwed.

If a job had ever stuck around long enough to feasibly pursue a mortgage, I've have not got one on the basis that I'd suspect the job wouldn't be around much longer after that. Maybe real estate in various places will start lowering when there's no way to pay for multimillion dollar bungalows anymore

He's talking about interviews, and it seems like a very appropriate comparison. Anyone who's tried and failed the interview gauntlet at almost literally any tech company in the last decade knows that it may as well be a total roll of the dice even if you pass the technical part.

I interviewed with some random company a few years ago, I don't even remember what they did but I know they didn't pay all that well. Passed the technical, and then I needed to 5 seper calls with everyone from marketing to the CTO. Apparently they all had equal weight and I answered some question more vaguely then they'd have liked, and I got an automated rejection. Had CC everyone before I got an answer as to what the problem was. Your shot doesn't only need to be perfect, it needs to be perfect while shooting into the darkness with no glasses on.

Sometimes the dice roll is front-loaded and you happen to sail through, match the vibes, nail the technical, and the second technical, and use AI as much as they want in your workflow, and on and on

> The actual restrictions were quite reasonable in the vast majority of cases, weren't in place very long, and were only spottily enforced.

It's ok to think they were reasonable or unreasonable, and which side you fall on seems like it'd largely be determined by personal circumstances and lifestyle.

> Sorry you missed a couple nights at Applebees.

This kind of rhetoric gives off a deplorable sort of pompous vibe. While it's probably untrue to say that both sides are equally authoritarian, it would also be untrue to suggest one side isn't at all. Both COVID and the response to it caused a tremendous of damage for some and created ridiculous amounts of wealth and almost no damage for others.

brailsafe··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
My first iPad entirely felt like a waste of money. Any time I'd want to do something useful with it, the mac was a better choice. Not sure what cellular on the iPad would have ever offered me, but I know why I want it on my laptop.

They recently reduced the price (also rare from Apple), but the macbooks with nano upgrade do ship with one.

I will say that it's the best cloth ever, and the nano upgrade is worth it

> Actually only then you finally have time to do what you want. The really cool stuff, not takeaway coffee, going to cinema, or one week vacation

I agree, but it's an opportunity tempered by how long your runway is compared to the ambiguity of what's next. Sure, if you saved $100k and your ongoing expenses are low, you should generally feel comfortable spending $3k to $10k going on a long-term adventure or something. But if there's no prospect of income when you come back, or 6 months after you come back, or 2 years after, the more money and time you spend enjoying yourself is an opportunity cost as much as it is a financial one. Having spent a shit-ton of my "career" (like half) unemployed, I'm definitely on the side of using your free will the way you wouldn't get to otherwise, but there's this anxiety of not having any answer to "how the fuck am I going to pay to live in the near future? how fast is my clock ticking?"

There's only so many times you can mentally ride out the space in between paid work where there's the real possibility your entire net worth drops to literally zero or negative.

I have no dog in this fight, but they didn't say "race", they said "ethnic cartel". Using race and ethnicity interchangeably seems as lossy in terms of information as the concept of race was invented to be

brailsafe··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
So do I, but I don't think I'd blame mobile-first designs, and instead place the blame on Microsoft sucking at making decisions, sucking at design, and sucking at mobile. Every bad Windows UI has, imo, been the result of trying to be cool and likeable by dying their hair a different colour to get some attention and getting ahead of or catching up with Apple who was playing a different game the whole time.

Apple meanwhile has made some notable mistakes, but when they do, it's usually a thorough bad bet that's just missed the mark, but if they do, it's all throughout their OS in every corner. Even with their recent Liquid glass blunder, they're not really putting a veneer that looks like wood over a rotting corpse of a house, they're just picking bad materials to update an otherwise decent layout. Microsoft's whole track consumer UI/product record imo is trying and failing to bet small but intrusively on ideas that don't work, aren't cool, and have no longevity. You see it as soon as you open the control panel that still looks like the 90s; it's this uncomfortable amalgam of failed tepid temporary marketing pitches by some department that make no sense

The concerta I take will occasionally leave me to be less talkative and less curious to the point where if I want to be in a more social context, I want to either time it right or not take it, but it also depends on hydration and diet that day. Otherwise I find it pretty important. I did downsize from 36mg to 27mg.
brailsafe··on MPs moving to restrict gambling ads in Canada
If you pass legislation without due diligence regarding constraining a now legal activity, then it is effectively an act of support for advertising it. In this case, nearly all members of all political parties supported legalizing it, and then passed it off to the provinces and washed their hands of it until now

brailsafe··on MPs moving to restrict gambling ads in Canada
Actually, to my surprise, it was nearly every party that tried to get similar legislation passed, and eventually it got nearly unanimous favour, which I find a little sad.

I agree about how one should conduct themselves in someone else's home, but is it really that interesting how they progressed as a technology company? To me it seems like the tried and true formula of enshittification. It's the startup playbook.
brailsafe··on Did I just spent 6 months building a product that no one wants
Not trying to insult here, but my takeaways are:

Your websites are sloppy, vague, generic. Sloppy in both the AI sense and in terms of quality (buttons aren't consistently sized, excessive use of lists of roundrects, beige/light-beige/cyan colour scheme is a bit rough). I don't know what your pitch is, whether you're offering a service or a product or what they are, or why you're worth picking over anything else.

It looks like you wanted to make a consulting website or something and then picked the most confusing, least compelling way possible to convey that. It's just a bunch of numbered sections and tag clouds with nebulous meaning and obviously AI generated.

brailsafe··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
Sure, seems like it would be a standard path in another time. The real personal crisis in that position these days is probably being forced to find a new career instead of or alongside raising a kid. Unless you get quite lucky, things can get dark very quickly. Job loss creates stress, prolonged unemployment might break up your relationship, lose access to the kid maybe, and suddenly you're destitute. It's hard to see prospects for normal people getting better, and it makes more sense to avoid the kid and the house.
