brodouevencode··on Microservices vs. Monoliths: Why Startups Are Getting "Nano-Services" All Wrong
Where is the source of data for that graph?
brodouevencode··on High toxin levels are illegal in public water but not for private wells
How would you even go about enforcing this?
brodouevencode··on Strongman's 'guy rope' muscles show greatest growth, study finds
I wonder how Eddie compares to other strongmen/powerlifters?
brodouevencode··on Study shows 'alarming' level of trust in AI for life and death decisions
Tangentially related: my daughter (11) and I watched Wargames a couple of weeks ago. I asked her what she thought of the movie and her response was "there are some things computers shouldn't be allowed to do".
brodouevencode··on Parenting Is Hazardous to Your Health, the Surgeon General Warns
> “Parents need the support of family members, friends and neighbors.”

Western countries have worked hard over the past few decades to reduce the impact of or downright destroy the influence of the nuclear family: a fairly generous welfare state, the constant denigration of religion, "DINK"s being treated as the popular thing to be, etc.

It's no wonder replacement birth rates have slowed to alarming levels and families are seen as broken.

brodouevencode··on Is 'No tax on tips' a distraction from the fight to end sub-minimum wages?
He would only eat at the Waffle House near where he lived. They got it after a while.
brodouevencode··on Is 'No tax on tips' a distraction from the fight to end sub-minimum wages?
It seems like a distraction.

I had a uncle that would tell the wait staff that the cash he handed them was a gift and not a tip (with a wink and a nod).

brodouevencode··on Ask HN: How come there is no one recommended way to setup Python environment?
People said the same around virtual environments, poetry, etc.
brodouevencode··on Elon Musk's X Is Leaving San Francisco. City Officials Say 'Good Riddance.'
Folks love to hate Elon Musk.
brodouevencode··on Ask HN: Is function patching in Python acceptable for a library to do?
Implementing like gevent did is also preferable, where you can patch some or all as arguments to the patch call.
brodouevencode··on Technical reasons why no global API for financial fraudsters and sex offenders?
> what are the technical reasons

There are no technical reasons, but there may be a lot of privacy/legal/moral reasons to not.

brodouevencode··on Make sports betting taboo again
It's fairly off-topic per the guidelines.
brodouevencode··on Plant-based meat substitutes not popular among mainstream flexitarians
There is no replacement for meat given the common diet, just like there is no replacement for ICEs given the common transportation infrastructure. Underlying fundamentals must change.
brodouevencode··on Why America fell for guns
The GSS data cited in the article contradicts many of the article's claims.
brodouevencode··on Movete is the new social media to athletes and gym rats
You should make that clear on the sign up page.
brodouevencode··on Elon Musk's Twitter Buyout Is Officially the Worst Deal Since Financial Crisis
haha, that's fair
brodouevencode··on Elon Musk's Twitter Buyout Is Officially the Worst Deal Since Financial Crisis
Folks love to hate Elon.
brodouevencode··on What are some unresolved hard problems in data streaming?
Though the CAP theorem has been disproven (to some extent) some of the problems it brings to light are still problems. Maybe start there.
brodouevencode··on "Engineers don't use AWS because it's good"
Several patterns emerged out of cloud services that enable cloud services to work better - namely event driven architectures, various cost savings strategies, HA/DR postures, etc - that cannot be applied to non-cloud architectures or even monoliths. If your team wants these patterns, you need to go cloud. Said differently: if they want experience in AWS, that's a proxy for wanting to learn these other techniques.

Moreover, this tweet is the rant of a single person that apparently doesn't care for AWS.

brodouevencode··on Replika CEO Eugenia Kuyda says it's okay if we end up marrying AI chatbots
This is so bizarre.
brodouevencode··on Is it OK for kids to lift weights? At what age and how heavy?
The "growth plate injury" myth needs to die - it's still very much alive and kicking in some circles.
brodouevencode··on Why newsrooms haven't published leaked Trump campaign documents
> Responsible journalism is preferable

Sure, but each newsroom, and maybe even journalist, has their own interpretation of what is "responsible".

brodouevencode··on Why do big digital projects in the public sector fail?
Here's a success story of a non-digital project: https://transportationops.org/case-studies/i-85-bridge-colla...

The reason it was successful is because the right incentives were in place for the people doing the work. Digital or not, the fundamentals are the same.

The public sector, in particular governments, have a long history of creating bad incentives or misaligning the incentives. The root causes of this are severalfold.

brodouevencode··on Elon Musk's X just sued a nonprofit advertising group out of existence
Probably. It was just that previously the victor wrote the history books, whereas now everyone has access to all the information all the time.

Admittedly my comment is a bit trite - purity contests are just as despicable.

brodouevencode··on Elon Musk's X just sued a nonprofit advertising group out of existence
I'm convinced there are no more "good guys".
brodouevencode··on Can anyone share recent experiences / stories on Cloud repatriation projects
The products that are leaving the cloud have (in my experience) been products that pre-dated the cloud or were not built with cloud native constructs in mind.
brodouevencode··on Skip and Arc'teryx built a futuristic exoskeleton
they are way ahead of this
brodouevencode··on Socialism for Realists
Socialism's many known and obvious surface problems aside, Marx was a giant fan of the Mephistopheles character in Faust (the avatar of Satan), even sub-quoting the famous line “Everything that exists deserves to perish.” into his own works. Nihilism is a potent drug for those in suffering, or those who feel wronged, or those who have simply been brainwashed. Nihilism leads down a path of hating yourself and your fellow man.

The point here is that Marx did a great job of wrapping his hatred for the human species in flowery, inspirational language that sounds great on the surface, but quickly devolves into exactly the failures, death, suffering and murder we've seen in the 20th century. So, be careful with this. It came from a very bad place.

brodouevencode··on A municipality installed a camera just outside a Swedish Redditor's balcony
This is so strange to me. Weren't they pretty gung-ho about GDPR?
brodouevencode··on Reddit now blocks all search engines other than Google following 'misuse'
I'm not sure I even care. Reddit has long been a cesspool, anything that was useful on there has since replicated to other channels (and usually in a much more consumable format), the subs are now all echo chambers, the site is gruelingly slow, and any network effects I personally had have all gone because all my friends have bailed.

To quote Rocky IV: "if he dies, he dies".
