bspammer··on sshole
One thing that makes me feel a lot more confident about exposing a WireGuard port is it’s completely invisible unless you have the host’s public key. Nothing will show up on a port scan.

Its security model doesn’t rely on that fact of course, but it’s the cherry on top.

bspammer··on sshole
The last few weeks have made me feel very good about my policy of zero internet-accessible ssh ports, ever. On AWS, use SSM. For a VPS or home server, access everything over WireGuard.
bspammer··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
Count yourself lucky that you haven't read enough LLM generated text to spot these. Each one individually might not be a clear signal, but all together it's extremely obvious.

> Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale

> Real mountains. Real valleys. All of it walkable.

> Every block is one metre

> Every block is one metre

> Your browser loads the aerial image directly from swisstopo, only once you move the slider

> If it runs on your computer, all of Switzerland will too.

> the game builds the distant view itself on first launch

> the game builds the blocks from the world package

> You pay for the licence to the world package, the world calculated from geodata

> The world, however, fills the whole rectangle around Switzerland, including parts of the neighbouring countries

> the world is built by a program from open data, not by hand

bspammer··on Blaise Pascal invented fixed route public transport (2024)
On a lot of London Underground lines, 5 minutes is considered poor service in rush hour. Every 2 minutes is required to handle the sheer volume of passengers
bspammer··on Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale
Just because you personally can't spot it, doesn't mean other people can't. There are a lot of very clear tells of AI writing, and this site is full of them.
bspammer··on Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone
I feel like your comment is a perfect example of what he was talking about.

> Russian politics over the last decades has so inculcated society with cynicism and conspiracy theory that people fundamentally do not believe in simple motives.

He was poisoned inside Russia in late 2020, and was extracted (by his family, he was in a coma) to Germany for treatment. He returned immediately after recovering in early 2021.

bspammer··on Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone
Navalny was very clear why he went back. Here's a reading of one of his final letters, which I highly recommend everyone watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25qEVGqPwLk
bspammer··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
This seems like the easiest way to frame it to non-technical people to me. They know what passwords are.
bspammer··on Starcraft: Ashfall
This was made less than a month ago, it was almost certainly vibe coded already.
bspammer··on Show HN: The Zelda timeline to catch up before the Ocarina of Time remake
I don't consider it canon when a different group of people decades later make a timeline, just because they happen to work for the same company. It might as well be fanfic.
bspammer··on Show HN: The Zelda timeline to catch up before the Ocarina of Time remake
Sure but that's a retcon. They didn't have this in mind when they made the games.
bspammer··on I never authorized an integration that scans my secrets
Just to add to your point, I’ve deliberately avoided home-assistant since this kerfuffle where frenck was quite rude to the NixOS maintainers. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27505277
bspammer··on What should we tell our students?
Though it’s very funny to imagine Tao suddenly acquiring a massive ego:

> At any given time in the history of mathematics, there have been mathematicians … whose mental capacity for mathematics seems completely super human (e.g., the owner of this blog, among many others).

bspammer··on What should we tell our students?
There have always been students that cheat themselves out of learning. It may even be the majority. It’s best to focus on the ones who have a genuine desire to learn.
bspammer··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
I'm not sure I agree that it was ludicrously wrong. His thesis is "the question isn't whether self-driving cars will replace human drivers, but how quickly". Sure it's been slow going, but you can't walk down a street in San Francisco today without seeing a Waymo, which wasn't true a few years ago. We're still at the bottom of the S curve.
bspammer··on Solving Factorio Quality
My dream game would be something like this: SpaceChem at the micro level, Factorio at the medium level, and StarCraft at the macro level. Your proficiency at each level would affect the levels above and below it.

Probably an impossible game to make, but I can dream.

bspammer··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
And anyone selling flying lessons could probably afford a graphic designer, it sounds like we agree.
bspammer··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
The last paragraph in GP’s comment is the key. Nobody would care about a low effort poster, what they care about is the deception of pretending you put a lot of effort into the poster. It’s dishonest, and it would make me subconsciously question what else they’re being dishonest about.
bspammer··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
For me what always gives it away is not the posters themselves, it’s the context. These are all overdesigned for a local community fair. There is no way they’d be paying for a professional designer for this, therefore it’s AI.

On the other hand if it had word art, grammar/spelling mistakes, images with wrong aspect ratios or clipping issues, that would immediately convince me it wasn’t AI.

bspammer··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
Yeah that's good application design, but those concerns aren't so relevant to the person writing the standard library for a language. You can certainly include a specialized version of reduce for nonEmptyLists which just returns A, but that doesn't change the fact that you have to return an Optional for a normal possibly-empty iterator if you want your reduce function to be non-partial.
bspammer··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
japgolly’s signature for reduce above is slightly wrong, it should be `[A] -> ((A,A) -> A) -> Maybe A`.

I.e. there is no initial value to pass in, but the result is an Optional to handle the empty iterator case. That’s how rust does it, for example:

https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/iter/trait.Iterator.html#metho...

bspammer··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Yeah this is selection bias. The remaining uncontacted tribes are uncontacted because they are very hostile to outsiders.
bspammer··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
The future is open models running on your device. No subsidized corporate tooling required. There will never be a reckoning for the people who are letting their coding skills atrophy.

I don't like it either, but that's the way it is.

bspammer··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
If you read the "Adapting Probabilities" section of the link above, there's a nice explanation of why changing the probability works.
bspammer··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Obviously they'll get away with this in the US, but doesn't this break a LOT of EU privacy laws?
bspammer··on Portal by Spotify cut my Claude Code token usage by 90%
The app has gotten consistently slower, buggier, with worse UX for over a decade. In all that time, I can’t recall a single new feature I’ve actually found useful.

The app was done in 2011. They could make a massive improvement across the board with a single git reset --hard command.

bspammer··on Dutch central bank moves 86 tonnes of gold from US citing 'geopolitical unrest'
They’re not moving it to the Netherlands. There’s still plenty of countries that the Dutch trust, but the US no longer seems to be on that list.
bspammer··on Check if a file was made with Claude
Anthropic must see themselves as the most evil people on the planet then. Forcing a sentient being to endure a non-stop barrage of abuse from the general public would be an unimaginable crime.

I don’t think they actually believe that.
