cajuntrep··on Ask HN: Review my startup: JobKaster Google Maps for Jobs
Thank you for the feedback and great question!

Why build another job board really? Job boards are dying (so is SEO, right!?) and with the advent of LinkedIn, I can easily find the recruiters or hiring managers in the companies I want to work.

But people will always need a way to find open positions. That's what job boards are all about.

The landscape may be changing, but there is still opportunities to do things better.

JobKaster was built because the other 100K job boards couldn't do what we wanted them to - a simple local job search.

Traditional job boards use a zip code based search using distance from the zip code. It seems that this would work, but when I was searching and ended up frustrated, the results were returning up jobs 15 miles out of my specified range.

I think the difference here is the fact that location becomes the most important aspect of the job search where on the other job boards, it is simply another filter.

If you work for one of the big job boards, you probably have several niche boards under your umbrella as well. Each of those serve a specific niche which is the same thing we are trying to do.

We want to help people find jobs when location is paramount. I hated my commute, and I just wanted to find something closer to home. My Co-Founder, wanted to find a job close to the beach. But what about others? What about the single mom that wants to be close to her child's day care? What about the guys and gals taking public transportation to work? What about students trying to find something close to campus? I could name 100's of examples, and I think JobKaster fits that niche quite well.

I would love to talk about this more in depth, especially with someone who has so much experience in job boards. Feel free to shoot me an email at paul@jobkaster.com or we can continue the discussion here if you like.

We're going to prove ourselves in this market in the short run, but long term we'd like to branch our into other job markets. We definitely want to add in the transportation options soon.

We've looked at Mapbox, but decided to go with Google Maps for now. There are some cool things we can do with Google Maps, but it's still an option for the future depending on the direction we decide to go. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks! We're still a while away from the mobile app, but great idea!

cajuntrep··on Ask HN: a quick and easy SEO service for startups?
Second (or third) Moz.
cajuntrep··on Ask HN: How do you manage your Twitter timeline?
I think it all depends on what you're using Twitter for...

If it's just your personal account, just check the most recent Tweets, and ignore the rest when you get bored of scrolling down. Weed out any people you follow that do not post interesting things.

If this is for business, the more followers the better. It's best to break followers into lists so that you can see the conversations you want to participate in.

cajuntrep··on Poll : Did your Startup experience ruined your love life?
I would say "tested" would have been a better word.

It's been difficult at times, but like ToniVlaic said, you need to try your best to balance relationships, friends, family, and health.

Dude, you might as well be talking gibberish to me, :)

But, the team said thanks, and it's fixed!

Regarding the Django project / app, they gave me an answer, but it was just as over my head as your question was. They didn't seem to think this was an issue though.

It's hard to learn to code when you're dedicating every waking hour after your 9-5 to your startup. I don't remember the last time I logged in to my codeacademy account. I'll learn one day!

cajuntrep··on Ask HN: Why do famous technical co-founders tend to fade away?
Because they have already accomplished their goal in the business world, and have moved on to more noble pursuits (or selfish).
cajuntrep··on Why are clients shocked by the price for web development?
Because non-technical people have no idea what you do. If I were to freelance or do web development I would position myself on the high end, and only target those customers. When you have customers that appreciate your work and don't think price is an issue, then you have the choice to choose who you want to work with.

ie. Raise your rates! :)

Maybe, but you had some great ideas on UI.

Plus it's hard to continue to look at things objectively when you've been staring at it for the past 6 months! :)

Of course, our main goal right now is to add a larger variety of jobs, but we had to make sure the core functionality was in place.

Filters are in the pipeline, but without variety, there is nothing to filter.

We'll be working hard to add a larger database and variety of jobs in the next few weeks / months.

Thanks!

Great feedback!

We are completely optimized for mobile.

We don't really have a designer on the team, and we all agree the overall design needs some work so design/UI critiques are very, very welcomed.

I don't want to comment on each and every section because I honestly don't have a design bone in my body, but I assure you I will be taking all of your suggestions to the team to see where we can improve.

Love the overlay suggestion. That's pretty awesome.

Suggestions on log-in, signup, info/pricing, nav bar - taken.

Once again, thanks for the advice. This is where we really need some help so it was most appreciated.

Paul

Daniel,

Thanks for the feedback! I see what you are saying. It's working great if you share your location and search in your area. But, if you're moving to say SF, like you said, it's not taking you to SF, only using your current location.

We'll have to fix that. Great point.

The list view is on the way. We currently have list view functionality if you are logged in as a job seeker. We did this to encourage signups, but I think we will move it the homepage.

Then we'll just have to add sorting features. If it's not already there.

Thanks!

After reading the title I wanted to write something funny, but after reading the article, I just couldn't do it. This is awesome. I think the biggest thing they're doing is instilling confidence which will bring you a long way!

Cool link on the Helminthic therapy! I've never heard of it before.

My wife works in a hospital, and she has been trained to always wash her hands. I on the other hand have always said that I am building my immune system by introducing my body to germs.

Not sure whose right here, but interesting theory nonetheless.

cajuntrep··on Poll: What was your financial situation when you started your startup?
At JobKaster, we all have an existing job, and are working nights and weekends.

I'm married and have a baby on the way, so I have to be able to support my family and manage risk.

Could we grow faster if we were full time? Maybe. But we might as well prove that the project is going to be profitable before we jump all in!

cajuntrep··on Diamonds Are Bullshit
I felt this way when shopping for a diamond. I thought it was bullshit. Plus, I figured the diamond salespeople were full of shit as well.
