carrotleads··on Two HN Announcements
I don't remember ever seeing a flag link.. so have never downvoted.

But I do upvote stuff I like and especially stuff I think is being censored by group think... so that could explain why my flag priviliges where never given or taken away before I could notice it..

carrotleads··on The 21-year-old building India's largest hotel network
A valid problem this.. I have been in Agra and was pissed off at how simple stuff didn't work.. there seemed to be seemingly simple solutions but the hotel owners/managers either didn't know or it seemed too hard... Similar issues in the trip earlier in the year on a trip via Trivandrum in the southern State..
carrotleads··on India Virtually Eliminates Tetanus as a Killer
I would then suggest its best to highlight possible corruption instances rather than pursue them..

that way the corrupt people see it in their interest to pull back rather than increase...

Obviously it needs to be paired with some instances being pursued to its logical conclusions and done so publicly.

carrotleads··on Why Founders Fail: The Product CEO Paradox (2013)
Very true.. all depends on who has the leverage..

if the startup has big traction, they have it..

if they are seeking better traction then the VC's have it...

carrotleads··on WordSafety – Check a name for unwanted meanings in foreign languages
tried a few words from Indian languages and got matches for other languages..

Interesting to see how you have implemented this...

carrotleads··on Jeff Bezos and the Amazon Way
the fact that they chose to decline your request shows that many execs are so used to people putting up with BS... I bet this exec team doesn't make the same mistake again but many will, cause very rarely do SDE ask for a raise.

Even then it's after they have put up with lots of BS and are used to status quo that they rarely ever quit.

carrotleads··on Jeff Bezos and the Amazon Way
He had stated that he did drink the koolaid initially...

seems like a matter of fact version..

carrotleads··on My husband needed therapy after working for Amazon
really...

if anything SDE are underpaid compared to the skills/competency they give in return..

We don't tell other professionals to take a pay cut cause a whole bunch of people are doing it tough...

carrotleads··on What happens when you talk about salaries at Google
Can I say thanks for clarifying my thoughts on this topic... I benefited quite a bit from understanding your arguments.
carrotleads··on Airbnb, My $1B Lesson
>> if people are serious about a deal then they need to move quickly, wrap it up and sign it.

exactly, you see this with recruitment.. when a company meets the right candidate they move very fast...

Anytime I did interviews, I had a 24 hr deadline for me to mentally strike out a option. Everytime I got a job, I was contacted almost within an 1-2 hr of doing the interview.

Any delays means they other party has other good options, same applies IMO here as well..

So in this case unless they sign on the dotted line pronto and give a cheque, things are still up in the air

carrotleads··on Airbnb, My $1B Lesson
Are we.. I am not so sure..
carrotleads··on Gigster (YC S15) Does The Dev Work To Turn Your Idea Into An App
Keen to know why you had a "Meh" response to Uber or AirBnB...

I am assuming you don't have the same response now and if so what changed.. Did your knowledge of the product change(like, you thought AirBnB was renting Air mattresses earlier) or did the traction the product received change your thinking...

carrotleads··on What happens when you talk about salaries at Google
yeah was searching for that as well.. this thread doesn't appear in the HN list and even search didn't throw it up..

Wonder if there is a special type of Shadow banning submissions on HN

carrotleads··on De-duplicating Hacker News
HN does this but only when the link is same...

you can have people post similar stories from different media's and if they get picked at different times then this could be useful.

carrotleads··on How Big is Space?
I was looking for this exact link and Josh's site seems down(HN effect :))..

that page lets you appreciate the vast emptiness within which we live..

this link gives some extra details until the page is up http://gizmodo.com/this-scale-model-of-the-solar-system-will...

plus some great links in the comments.

carrotleads··on After the Layoffs
They only knew they were staying not who was going..

How would the person sitting across you know you are not going to have a job... unless you talked...

Except for close friendships it is quite unlikely Person A who is staying knows who isn't.. no where did Jason mention that he volunteered info on who is going...

carrotleads··on 7 Rejections
Yeah that is exactly what I thought as well..

its not like they pivoted... maybe the homepage pitch changes...

All this episode should highlight is that founders should not think that VC's have some sort of wisdom when they reject...

They follow only one wisdom and that is traction... if you got that and in huge spades, then everything can be explained in a wise manner.. and we will marvel at their wisdom.

carrotleads··on Developers are not always rich people
I understand it is a relative...

but the rates should be similar to what is earnt by other professionals.. in this case the rates seemed to be at burger flipping ones for the region..

basically I feel lots of devs are underselling themselves..

carrotleads··on Developers are not always rich people
That may well be the case but a dev should not trade his/her time at similar rates to other skills that didn't take much time/effort to learn..

dev skill isn't a common one, it takes a special kind of mindset to be a half decent dev...

carrotleads··on Developers are not always rich people
it baffles me how devs can work for those rates...

no wonder I still see Ads for C++ contracts in Melbourne for $50/hr for a mid-senior level job... clearly there are people who work at those rates...

the biggest thing holding dev salaries back is cause many devs love what they do..

carrotleads··on Greeks Reject Bailout Terms
>> I wonder how many other large government bodies meant to unify multiple different cultures have hit this at some point, and what percentage has failed.

Same happens in India, states with separate rules, completely different culture and still functions under one federal umberalla..

carrotleads··on The Sikhs who saved Parmesan
Sikhs are hardworking people, so its no surprise you can see their influence across India.

Even during the heights of Punjab insurgency the Army Chief was a Sikh and a majority of India's defence chiefs have been Sikhs.

The Indian cusine that is found outside India is predominantly a Punjabi cusine. Bollywood is dominated by them as well.

A few year back, I met a Sardarji at Adelaide airport and his story mimics the one in this article. Difference is they are in the borders of South Australia and Victoria in Australia and into Citrus cultivation and were diversifying.

carrotleads··on How I Grew My Company from $100 to $400M
Something else that bugs me is in the inherent contradiction in his advice..

1. tell people about your concept and ask for money.

2. if people give you money start work.

3. you will pivot 20+ times anyway

Wouldn't that be basically like sell a dream and then figure out a product/service that may make money.

Not much different to how YC like Accelerators/Incubators invest in "teams"..

Shouldn't conmen begin to flock towards such "investors" or are they already?

carrotleads··on How I Grew My Company from $100 to $400M
Suckers are the ones not selling it which would be majority of the programming populace..

I have seen top guys code up a entire solution at $X per hr. People who support that solution are able to charge 2X or 3X and who know only 1/10 of it... All cause they know how to speak the language or the sales guy who spoke the language sold it at that level.

People who have access to money are always paying for convenience.. programmers feel guilty charging for such stuff as we are aware of all the free options and generally do it for free.

carrotleads··on You Draw It: Family Income vs. College Attendence
If your guess and data differ, wouldn't it be advisable to double check your data, collection mechanisms and your assumptions that led to your guess/estimate.

After a few goes your data needs to take precedence and one's guess dumped.

carrotleads··on Downsides of Being Clever
Why don't we see people talk about the downsides of being talented( in sports)..

Why is being talented in a bookish or intellectual sense looked down upon? so much so clever kids are asked to not show of their cleverness.

We don't ask sporty kids (or people) to be less sporty..

Is there an underlying principle at work here that threatens the average populace?

carrotleads··on Duolingo Raises $45M, Now Valued at $470M
But are these guys making money from solving the problem. Seems like its a free service and they are balking from chasing the profitability route. From the article

>>>> “The reasoning for this was that, though we could make it a profitable business, we realized we’d quickly become a translations business as we’d have to hire people focused on quality control, sales people, etc. and eventually businesses tend to pay more attention to the parts of the company that are profitable,” a spokesperson told us.

“We are an education company and are here to help bring education to everyone in the world and to make education more effective.”

<<<<<

Good intentions but does not seem to support your key point or am I mistaken?

carrotleads··on Are Multiple Personalities Always a Disorder?
I am keen to know if "wide variety of personal characteristics and a vast array of highly specialized skills" is fiction or modelled on real world personas.

To take it further do people with MPD have differing physical personas as well, say they have different diseases

carrotleads··on Ten Days of Silence
If it was benefecial, why didn't you do more of it..

Surely as rational people that is the course to take?

I see the same with my Yoga practice... touchwood, I am mostly healthy and I should do more Yoga but somedays I am looking for reasons not to do my usual tiny practice..

Is it cause we don't make the outward connection between the practice and our wellbeing?

PS : thinking aloud and trying to see if I am alone in this...

carrotleads··on Holding Your Breath in India
Such campaigns are necessary to build awareness and it happens in an incremental fashion initially...

People then join efforts like this more readiliy... http://www.folomojo.com/indias-biggest-clean-up-effort-chenn...

Hopefully it would lead to a tipping point in whole attitude and stop people littering unashamedly while keeping their living quarters clean..
