ceravis··on 2026 Eclipse Webcams
If you're going to be within the path of totality, I strongly urge you to go outside and look up at the eclipse during totality with the naked eye, it's safe: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/#eye-safety-total

Truly a transcendent experience: the shadow of the moon rushing across the land toward you, the air suddenly cooling, the sunset horizon in every direction, the ring of the sun's corona surrounding the silhouette of the moon... There's no other natural phenomenon like it, and video/photos truly don't do it justice!

ceravis··on Kilauea erupts, destroying webcam [video]
Perhaps a total solar eclipse? Especially so when seeing half the solar system lined up neatly in a row with the sun and moon (and a comet in case of the recent April 2024 eclipse in the US), and truly feeling that one is riding on a chunk of rock hurtling through space, tethered invisibly to that impossibly distant mass of gas and plasma like a ball at the end of a rope...

Still get frisson every time I think about it ;)

ceravis··on Arvo Pärt's Journey
Thanks! That's the best Fratres performance I've yet to see (the "wincing frisson" in her facial expressions) -- but this Gidon Kremer performance from 1984 is the best I've yet to hear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmUE8b5kAQ4

The comic in question: https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1990/12/07 -- Calvin's mom's reaction is priceless.

My understanding is that Tesla no longer has a Public Relations department[1]... so they may have simply set their inbox size to zero?

ceravis··on Can brown noise turn off your brain?
For those wanting to generate some sounds like the above, I made what is effectively a noisy synthesizer / visual demo a while back that can be played note by note on a PC keyboard (or will play itself if left untouched, see attached readme). But to get it into "wall of sound" territory you need to hold down the up arrow and/or space bar for quite a while to speed up the bike until the visuals start distorting:

As a complement to the adjacent comment thread on Shoegaze music, I find a similarly dense, soothing, blanketing effect from some recent noise/drone music genres (especially on good headphones, or out loud with a subwoofer), for example:

The pulsing deep noise of Tim Hecker's Piano Drop:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlfwZDR_1Hg

The gradual crescendo to a wall of noise in Abul Mogard's Like Water:

Conflicting tension + blanket of sound in Siavash Amini's The Wind:

NB: All of the above have a significant low frequency component that may be missed on desktop speakers or low quality headphones...

ceravis··on Apple Car: Bad Idea After All
Custom OEM size/fit has been addressed to some degree for a quite a while now by both the "mainstream" car audio manufacturers [1] and, more extensively, by some lesser-known aftermarket brands [2].

YMMV based on just how old your car is and the type of OEM head unit, but there are kits (e.g. this one for a 2016+ Honda Civic [3]) that allow you to install "standard" head units with a fit/style similar to OEM.

ceravis··on So You Want to Compete with Steam (2018)
Let users post reviews of the video reviews? ;)

I kid -- but a simple thumbs up/down metric could help separate signal from noise (as is done with current text reviews on Steam).

ceravis··on Microsoft Has No Plans to Let You Move the Windows 11 Taskbar
Highly recommend ExplorerPatcher: https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher

Allows you to move taskbar to side or top of screen, as well as retoring a number of other Windows 10 features (e.g. old-style context menus):

ceravis··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Have you tried The Ascent: https://store.steampowered.com/app/979690/The_Ascent/

Doesn't go as far as what you're imagining, but it's a step in the right direction...

ceravis··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Have you tried The Surge? Not quite in space, but in the future, a massive derelict facility overrun by malfunctioning robots and augmented humans, that captures a lot of what makes Souls games great:

ceravis··on Sunsetting the Bethesda.net launcher and migrating to Steam
FromSoftware (Dark Souls/Sekiro) Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo) Santa Monica Studio (God of War) Kojima Productions (Death Stranding) Larian Studios (Divinity Original Sin) Playdead (Inside/Limbo)

Studios who choose/have the freedom to release a game "when it's ready", and/or have Sony/Microsoft backing.

One can hope Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda will change their ways, but having set the release date of Starfield (11/11/22) so far ahead of time doesn't inspire confidence... hopefully they'll have the freedom to push this back if needed.

ceravis··on Intel Launches $1B Fund to Build a Foundry Innovation Ecosystem
Intel Arc discrete GPUs are aimed at high-end gaming PCs, and should start arriving Q1 2022:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Arc

Likely they'll be subject to the same price gouging and limited supply as AMD and NVidia GPUs...
