Past Experience/Projects/Achievements:

Before jumping into my first startup (next paragraph), I spent roughly 10 years working at local ISPs doing pretty much everything an ISP does... or at least did back then. Apache+CGI, Bind, Sendmail/Postfix, and a whole lotta Cisco. Remember when IOS was synonymous with Cisco instead of Apple?

In 2010 then I went on doing my own first startup, called doctape. Doctape was a cloud storage product with a focus on "software-less consumption", e.g. file conversion and preview technology. This was before Google Drive even existed and Dropbox's web interface and efforts around "cloud-first" storage were still in their infancy.

In 2014 we decided to switch strategies and start selling our tech as an API + client framework for others to use. Things escalated quickly from there, and I suddenly found myself talking to everyone from Amazon (VP of Kindle/Cloud Drive), to even our competitors like Dropbox (hey Drew ) & Box (hey Aaron ). Instead of joining a company that already had people working on file storage and such, we decided to go with an even more exciting opportunity for the team and also myself: joining Atlassian and moving with the team of seven + partners to Sydney, Australia.

During the first couple of years at Atlassian, my main focus was obviously to make the integration of our people and tech a success. Today what the team and I have built is powering pretty much all attachment + link experiences in Confluence, Jira, Bitbucket LFS & to some extent Trello. All that didn't happen overnight of course. In fact, our team was pretty much the first true cross-product platform investment Atlassian ever made, so you can imagine the work it took (not just tech, but also people and communication-wise) to break away from how they used to develop and operate each product, each in their own little silo. It's been an interesting ride (and rollercoaster), to say the least, but totally worth it!

I finally managed to jump ship in Dec 2020, and since been working away on Questmate (questmate.com), which I'm determined to make the number one app for getting shit done.

Time will tell, I guess ;)

P.S. As you might have seen in some of my posts, I'm always curious to connect with new folks.. to learn, help, and every now and then, invest. So please don't be shy to connect and pitch me what you're working on!

This is a bit of an older video, but it shows the sheet based collection management in the second half of the video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=45TGtUQry6Q

Looks amazing. I'm currently using Mantine alot and still super happy with it so far, but will keep this in mind. I just wish somebody would finally build something of similar quality for ReactNative. The existing solutions I'm aware of all fall short in comparison.
cheerioty··on YouTube is a mysterious monopoly
Love YouTube, but between the price hikes and being fed nothing but shorts and doom-scroll bait, they’re pushing me to the edge. For the former, it feels like every streaming service (audio or video) is starting pave the way for a new golden age of piracy and personal content collections.

cheerioty··on Ask HN: Is HN flooded with AI-propaganda bots?
You're not overthinking it. Beep boop
cheerioty··on Ask HN: Founders, where do you go to get a new landing page done?
I guess I'd try lovable first for my next venture.
cheerioty··on Ask HN: Would limiting game size to 5–10 MB spur the creation of novel games?
Yes, also go tracker/fm-based instead of bloating game size with PCM tracks.
cheerioty··on Ask HN: What product should the new Commodore release?
I was planning taking on something like this myself before, hence these are notes of what I would go for quiet literally :) Given the amount of projects I already have going on right now, I'd rather see somebody else do it and back them instead.
cheerioty··on Ask HN: What product should the new Commodore release?
Getting the chance to talk to Peri soon, but here's my take..

- Backwards compatible C64/Amiga (I'm aware they don't own the Amiga Trademark itself), not PC/Emulation based (FPGA, SOC, Classic/Original Chips) - New capabilities, e.g. faster clockrates, co-processors/accelerators, support for more colors - keep ~240p as internal resolution, with analog i/o outputs + 4k internal upscaler for hdmi output - Introduce new tile-based mode, but keep bitmap/fb based ones - EPROM based cartridges (e.g. no filesystem/sd-like media) but still upgradable using cartridge-bound signed/encrypted updates files (via USB or via system cartridge slot (like Mod Retro/Chromatic does) - Wifi (mostly for multiplayer, maybe a builtin marketplace, not browsing the web!) - Exclusive game titles + license best modern 2d games - Effectively built a 2D powerhouse (think Neo Geo 2.0), in favour over 3d (people can still do that in software if cpu/2d capabilities are strong enough (see PICO-8 examples that do vr racing, cad editor and what not)

To achieve this, prioritize hiring engineers that have the expertise to build this new world over hiring managers or pc-based/x68/modern computing engineers. I'd recommend getting a strong, full-time technical lead like Gideon Zweijtzer, Furrtek, or one of the capable FPGA core developers from Mist/Mister.

Basically don't become another toy/mini console rebirth, but rather becoming the new cool kid on the block.

Hey HN,

We’ve been building these audible summary cards to help you catch up faster and without needing to open ten different apps. You know, after being asleep, in a meeting, or both :)

Would love any feedback to see if this is worth pursuing further!

Cheers, Sascha Founder @ Questmate

cheerioty··on Who else gets confused by GitHub PR saying "Open" after merging?
I know a reload does fix it, that's not my point :)
cheerioty··on I've created a todo app which allows you to do things
You can connect your Philips Hue, Tesla, door access system, alarm system, Shopify, Notion, Jira or your own API, which will allow you and others to DO things right from your recurring to-dos/routines. Open doors, close tickets, add products to Shopify... whatever it takes to get the thing done!

cheerioty··on Ask HN: Why does PayPal protect scammers?
They finally escalated my enquiry on the executive level and acknowledged that they obliged to investigate. They also provided me with my rights, e.g. if i'm not satisfied with how they handle things that I can bring it up with the Australian Financial Compliants Authority. Seems to be region specific but I assume similar things are in place for other regions.
cheerioty··on Ask HN: Why does PayPal protect scammers?
I’m not asking for PayPal to make people whole. But when their service is used as part of a scam/crime, are there legally not bound to investigate?
cheerioty··on Why Custom GPTs are better than plugins
Yes, the naming is less an ideal, to say the least. That being said, I'm not too sure what a better never would have been either.
cheerioty··on Why Custom GPTs are better than plugins
Precisely, the UX feels simple, and you get results almost in an instant. If you did write a plugin before, pulling over your action is just a matter of copying & pasting your existing definition. Also, at least some developers love themselves some great UX too :)

cheerioty··on Ask HN: 20% of LinkedIn's recent layoffs were managers
It's a big mess, for sure. I'm currently trying to interview as many of those managers with>10+ direct reports as possible to see what their biggest pain point is with staying on top of it. If you're one of them, ping me (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sascha-manuel-reuter-3177752b), and let's see how we can ease the pain for you and your directs.

I hope this will at least allow them to focus on their own app again. It went from “works great” to “garbles my text”, “text markers are wrongly placed or not showing at all” and a gazillion other issues it feels like :-/
