(2018)

Webassembly isn't THAT "new and shiny" anymore in 2024 :)

That's mostly because "Martini" is the prevalent brand of vermouth in central Europe. It's super confusing... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martini_%26_Rossi
chkuendig··on WeWork says will file to withdraw IPO
> What I don't understand is how do things get this far down the road before a good old fashioned sanity check happens?

Softbank was hoping Vision Fund II will be closed once this collapses so pumping it up to 47B made sense to juice the returns on Fund I.

Adam N. already took 700M of his chips off the table before the IPO as well, so he clearly expected the music to stop playing as well.

chkuendig··on Hong Kong protestors using Bridgefy's Bluetooth-based mesh network messaging app
Anybody have some details on this? I always wondered how this is handled for Chinese going abroad or Foreigners traveling in China without sending the keys back and forth.

Or do Chinese iCloud accounts still use the Chinese servers even when abroad while the western ones get to go through the great firewall for western iCloud?

chkuendig··on Open Source Game Clones
Would be great to have a platform-support filter (at least for Android/iOS/Windows/Mac/Linux)
chkuendig··on Google to Acquire Looker
I would interpret this as a sign that Thomas Kurian is trying to "enterprisify" Google Cloud by acquiring companies with high-touch enterprise sales cultures. Which runs against Google's traditional stance but is also credited as one of the reason Google Cloud has struggled to sell into big companies so far.
chkuendig··on Source code for Zork, Hitchhiker’s Guide, and other Infocom games

chkuendig··on Speedrunning Windows 95
You can use classic starcraft / brood war keys as vouchers on battle.net if you want to verify and make sure you'll always have a digital copy available :)
chkuendig··on Firefox to Block All 3rd Party Trackers by Default
No, I meant across different properties of different publishers. I assume that's still only possible with browser fingerprinting, IPs etc.

So blocking third-party cookies is a good start to avoid tracking across different publishers (which is the big no-no for me, the fact that a single publisher knows what i read of his is not such a big issue and not that different to what has always been done by just crawling the ht_access logs...)

chkuendig··on Firefox to Block All 3rd Party Trackers by Default
I assume they'd only combine them on "soft factors" (browser fingerprints, IPs etc) then?

Since the unique IDs between the different platforms would differ for the same user (as there's no way to coordinate without 3rd party cookies)

chkuendig··on Firefox to Block All 3rd Party Trackers by Default
How can first-party cookies used to track users across multiple properties?
chkuendig··on Reflecting on My Failure to Build a Billion-Dollar Company
> no real differentiating benefits other than size and brand recognition and maybe some vague “guarantee” to the customer.

- scale

- brand

- customer loyalty

that's a lot of differentiation. more then 99% of the businesses in the world and more than even many public companies.

(especially once you add the power gained from aggregating demand and supply which most of these companies have)

Cut & Paste for when you really need to reorganize? But usually it would probably be enough to just list the most recent files somewhere and provide full text search for everything else.
chkuendig··on U.S. judge says Uber withheld evidence, delays Waymo trial
I keep hearing this here, but AFAIK there's plenty of record keeping regulation which won't allow for that. No?

I assume many companies auto-clean the user-facing mailboxes for different reasons, but they probably all are required to archive the emails on some type of long-term storage for a few years.

But maybe that's just industry-specific regulations...

chkuendig··on Ask HN: We didn't get a single person to pay for our SAAS – what could be wrong?
You are right, failure to onboard is not churn. Churn is when the customer doesn't renew or come back after a certain initial period has passed.
chkuendig··on WebAssembly support now shipping in all major browsers
Unfortunately I can't get into details regarding the getUserMedia stuff, not only due to trade secrets but also being from the product team and not engineering :)

> plus the requirement for a license check at runtime is shooting our big use case in the foot

That should only be a problem with test licenses, ping us at support@scandit.com and we can help.

chkuendig··on WebAssembly support now shipping in all major browsers
On older mobile devices it can decrease significantly, but it's still much better then any known Javascript alternatives (e.g. quaggaJS) and works reasonably well even when only passing on a handful of frames/sec to the scanner library. (which happens on slower devices)

OTOH having SIMD would speed it up significantly and probably get them all up to speed.

chkuendig··on WebAssembly support now shipping in all major browsers
Unfortunately SIMD is still not supported on any browsers and with the move away from SIMD.js it looks like this might take a while.

We've been working on porting over our fairly large barcode scanner library to WebAssembly. While the performance is close to what we have on other platforms ( http://websdk.scandit.com ), the major bottleneck for now is not being able to use optimized code relying on SIMD (and not having an existing C fallback as all other platforms we target have SIMD support)

chkuendig··on Show HN: Near native C++ speeds with barcode scanning with WebAssembly
Disclosure: I work for Scandit.

This is a project we have been working on for a while and just launched. Feel free to ask me anything regarding barcode scanning or porting large and optimized C++ code-bases to webassembly.

[Edit] Here's the NPM package if you want to try this out yourself: https://www.npmjs.com/package/scandit-sdk

chkuendig··on Cambridge Analytica: The Data That Turned the World Upside Down
Not again this story. This is a very sensationalist take on the impact of micro-targeting. It probably has some impact, but every political campaign has been doing this for years and there isn't something inherently special about Cambridge Analytica's approach (other then being funded by the Mercers and hence Trumps go-to firm).

chkuendig··on Yahoo to Change Name to Altaba
Since everybody here is confused on why they would give up the Yahoo brand: This is not the Yahoo which was sold to Verizon (which stays Yahoo, incl. email service) but the investment vehicle holding all the Alibaba shares. The name "Altbaba" is an obvious play at the official ticker of Alibaba (BABA)
