chrispeel··on Interactive marginal tax rate chart for UK
A somewhat similar chart for the US is at the link below. It also includes a GIF that shows effective tax rates back to 1862.

chrispeel··on Jim Simons has died
Archive link for original article: https://archive.ph/zIx9b

Simons also funded Quanta magazine: https://www.quantamagazine.org/about/

His Wikipedia page is interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Simons_(mathematician)

chrispeel··on How rich is too rich? Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth
As a marketing term I like "Limitarianism"
chrispeel··on A Mathematical Theory of Communication [pdf]
* The Idea Factory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Idea_Factory) includes info on Kelly (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_criterion) as well as Shannon.

* A Mind at Play (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Mind_at_Play) is a bio of Shannon. I think a much better bio could be written, but this is all we have.

* "Information Theory" by Cover and Thomas is a mathematical introduction to information theory. This is a technical book, and is very different than the books above.

If you haven't yet done so, read Shannon's paper as linked above

chrispeel··on The AI expert who cited himself thousands of times on scientific paper
I couldn't finish Sinclair's book on aging [1]; even in a book that he co-authored he comes across as a scammer

chrispeel··on NASA Warns Against Taking Eclipse Photos with Your Smartphone
MKBHD on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MKBHD/status/1777045761705853295

"Just pointed my phone camera directly at the midday sun for 5 minute straight. It got a little warm, but... no damage. I'm gonna go ahead and say point your phones at the eclipse tomorrow, it'll be fine "

just because his phone was fine doesn't mean yours will be

chrispeel··on Degen communism: the only correct political ideology
I guess "Degen" in this context means [1] a person "engaged in high-risk, high-reward strategies without much regard for potential losses. These individuals were seen as reckless, often gambling with their investments in the hopes of striking it rich."

chrispeel··on Only eat organic? You're paying too much, and it's not worth it, author says
An opposing view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4nJ07_02NQ

I often buy organic food: I can afford it and like the goal of using zero or minimal pesticides and herbicides. For me, it's like Pascal's wager: it can't hurt

chrispeel··on Ethereum has blobs. Where do we go from here?
Thanks for responding
chrispeel··on 10 Years of Git: An Interview with Git Creator Linus Torvalds
mb needs a 2015 tag?
chrispeel··on Ethereum has blobs. Where do we go from here?
Where did you get that number?

Vitalik gave goals of 1.33 MB per second in blob space, and a compressed tx size of 25 bytes. This gives around 50,000 transactions per second, which seems like a worthy goal.

chrispeel··on We Are Not Alone: The Universal Dangers of Social Isolation (2017)
At first I thought the lack of a link was a sort of recursive comment on our online situation (We are always clicking, but never going anywhere).

But I guess the real situation is just that someone forgot the actual link, which could be the following:

chrispeel··on Optimum Strategies for Creativity and Longevity
Table 1 in that article doesn't satisfy my internal bullshit detector, and it looks like others have debunked it as well; see the article below for an example.

chrispeel··on [dead]
Begrudging?

From m-w.com the definition of begrudging is "said, done, or given reluctantly"

So you want PMs who will only work at Eight sleep reluctantly?

chrispeel··on A 45 year engineer clears up electric sauna ventilation
In what part of the world is it typical to say "45 year engineer"? I'm an engineer in the western US, and would say "an engineer with 45 years of experience". I interact with lotsa international english; this one is new
chrispeel··on Lattices vs. Cranks
If by "this kind of approach" you mean lattice tools, then I think the answer is yes. See the link below for an example in the Wikipedia page on the LLL. Also the second link may be helpful

chrispeel··on Cyclomatic complexity
Kolmogorov complexity [1] is a measure of the complexity of an object (say a text), while Cyclomatic complexity is a measure of the complexity of a program. Can we make any statements about the relationship between them?

Let's say we have a text A, and we find a program P which is of length L and which the Kolmogorov complexity K(A); i.e. L=K(A). Does it make sense to compare the cyclomatic complexity C(P) with K(A)? Or can we write some equation or inequality the compares C(P) with K(A)?

I guess a first task would be to normalize one or the other so as to get the same units...

chrispeel··on American Journalism Headed Toward an 'Extinction-Level Event'
At present the title of the article [1] is "Is American Journalism Headed Toward an ‘Extinction-Level Event’?" To which I would answer "No". That's a click-bait headline complaining about how American newspapers are moving towards click-bait journalism ;-) It even looks to me like the HN headline changed the article headline to be more click-baity.

Two examples of papers that appear to me to be thriving are the NY Times (commercial), and the Salt Lake Tribune (non-profit). Newspapers may have problems, but I don't think we can say they're going extinct.

chrispeel··on Show HN: QnAyoutube.com – The fastest way to chat with YouTube videos
I initially read it as "QAnonYoutube.com"
chrispeel··on Remembering Bell Labs as legendary idea factory prepares to leave N.J. home
It's called "the internet".

People from around the world can collaborate easily on incredibly projects such as Linux or OpenRISC. Or on closed-source projects as used by FAANG companies.

chrispeel··on Ask HN: Is it time to break up Amazon?

chrispeel··on Meat intake is positively correlated with life expectancies
mb meat intake is positively correlated with having enough calories.

I.e. for people who are struggling to get enough to eat, of course they should eat meat. In contrast, I guess most readers of HN get enough calories and there will be no problem with eating veg

chrispeel··on $5M Is Nothing
It looks to me like adastra22 gave a real-world illustration of the following quote from the article:

If the question is: How much money do you need to be happy? The answer is always going to be: More.

:-)

chrispeel··on Calif. tech investor's wedding trashed base of world-renowned landmark
In the desert if you destroy vegetation it may take years to recover.

It's not the specific case here that I find a problem, rather the compounding effect of all of us destroying a bit of vegetation until the planet is paved in asphalt and trash

chrispeel··on Intermittent fasting more effective than calorie restriction
I'd like to see a RCT that compared two time-restricted eating groups: 7am to 3pm, and noon to 8pm. Which would have the larger benefit over a control group?

Also, it would be good to simultaneously (somehow) check if the results depend on one's genetic or cultural bias towards eating in the morning or evening.

chrispeel··on Ask HN: Who are examples of ethically upstanding founders/CEO to model after?
I guess that the people who have honesty, authenticity, and empathy are more likely to do other things than start companies. Say found a non-profit or work as a social worker, or to be a scientist.
chrispeel··on Ask HN: Twitter is up for auction, what do you bid?
musk could go a long way towards rescuing his reputation if he'd convert Twitter into a public charity, especially if he puts in place a diverse board.

So... $0
