cjdavis··on My dog was killed on a walk with a walker ordered through Wag
> His pathfinding is just not good.

He’s optimized for minimum anxiety, not time or distance. Your dog’s pathfinding is _excellent_.

cjdavis··on Chip-based credit cards are a decade old; why doesn’t the US rely on them yet?
Wait, I just realized that this means I'm not going to have to keep and securely store 7 years of signed CC receipts for my business! Can't happen fast enough.
cjdavis··on MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Late 2013 Teardown
On previous models, the headphone and microphone jacks were on a small daughterboard which can be replaced without soldering.
cjdavis··on Why getting the Obamacare exchanges to work was difficult
See the previous discussions, here's one: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6492127

It wasn't simply the website - it's the entire exchange including call centers, advertising, etc.

cjdavis··on Fake Reviewers Snared in NY Attorney General Yogurt Sting
That's why the AG created the fake yogurt shop. Zero difficultly in determining the fake reviews. I doubt they would take on the case of a single shop's problems.
cjdavis··on Show HN: Web-controlled Christmas Lights with Node.js, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi
Replacing the Arduino with a Digispark (http://digistump.com/products/1) would probably work well.
cjdavis··on The first hack at TechCrunch Disrupt's hackathon is called TitStare.
- Women who wear clothing designed to show cleavage

- Men who stare at cleavage

Discuss.

Wait, just to make it a little more useful:

- Men who giggle like children about their project aimed at the above two groups

cjdavis··on The first hack at TechCrunch Disrupt's hackathon is called TitStare.
...and, video not found 11 minutes later.
cjdavis··on Iain Banks dies of cancer aged 59
I spent six weeks in London for a college exchange class the summer of 1990 and discovered Banks and the Culture; I believe it was Consider Phlebas. One of the best parts of that summer. I remember the delays in releases of books once back in the US was agonizing.

Fuck cancer.

cjdavis··on Data intelligence complex is the real story
I was with you right up to your last sentence. 'Our freedoms,' that's the number one cause of terrorism?
cjdavis··on Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space
Ok, looks like I have an OSS solution with code on Github: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rafali.fli...
cjdavis··on Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space
The Android app STILL does not provide automatic upload. That is the only thing I want or need from the Android app - I backup images I take on my phone, and make public the few that I want to share. So now I use Google+. But I have years of photos on Flickr, so I'd still like to switch back.

I really don't understand why it's missing.

cjdavis··on Coded messages in the control room as Mars Curiosity lands
The best details are in the audio story - under 'listen to the story' at the top. I'm fascinated they had a series of announcements that indicated specific points in the landing sequence that were not publicly known, before they actually announced the landing, which had happened 10 seconds earlier.
cjdavis··on NASA TV feed of 10:31 pm PDT Curiosity landing
One of us watching this right now is going to set foot on Mars. Probably more than one.
cjdavis··on Those budget 27" IPS displays from Korea are for real
It's more of two slopes rather than two spikes:

cjdavis··on Obama gives himself control of all communication systems in America
Here's the original Executive Order: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/07/06/execut...

I'm curious, how much does this really differ from the original Emergency Broadcast System, or the current Emergency Alert System?

cjdavis··on Facebook Blames Email Problems On User "Confusion"
I've never heard of the 'other' folder before. So I go look for it and find a message from an old college friend getting back in touch. From 10 months ago. Thanks FB.
cjdavis··on Facebook e-mail mess: Address books altered, e-mail lost
Agreed. I paid a buck for HaxSync to get sync working on ICS, looks like it wasn't able to overwrite the email addresses I had for people. I just disabled contact sync for HaxSync and Facebook (in case they actually decide to get it working with ICS)
cjdavis··on Introducing The New IFTTT
If you are looking for 'microcontrollers <-> webservices with full restful api' then Cosm looks pretty good. Arduino, Nanode, mbed, devices running OpenWRT...

They just changed names from Pachube.

cjdavis··on Coldplay Wristbands Turn Audience Into Giant LED Display
Using highly directional antennas on the transmitter should be able to accomplish similar results without increasing the cost of the wristbands.
cjdavis··on Apple may seek to stop U.S. launch of Galaxy phone
You can buy an unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus directly from Google https://www.google.com/nexus/
cjdavis··on 6.5 Million LinkedIn Password Hashes Leaked
It seems we will never get rid of bad programming like this. I hit the 'forgot my password' link on the T-Mobile website yesterday and the pop-up requested my T-Mobile phone number. Ten seconds later I received an SMS with my actual password in it.
cjdavis··on US and Israel created Stuxnet, lost control of it
While the threat of terrorism is not imaginary, it is certainly negligible compared to other threats.
cjdavis··on Google gets license to test drive autonomous cars on Nevada roads
Between 'drive this truck 50 mph on city streets through traffic to a destination address' and 'carry this package from the curb to the front door' I'd have thought the first one would be more difficult to solve.
cjdavis··on SpaceX test firing the Falcon 9
T-00:03:30..
cjdavis··on Cube: 3D home printer starts shipping in days
.. or Cube makes their printer compatible with one of the many OSS toolchains that already exist.

Why would people bother with reverse engineering their proprietary (and expensive) system, when you could go ahead and spend the time improving the fully open systems that are out there?

cjdavis··on Tmux, for fun and profit
A small addition: use a wildcard DNS entry and you can skip 1).
cjdavis··on Want to code for the devil?
It's even worse than that. You would specifically be one of the minions analyzing code that you can claim infringes IV patents.

Doing the devil's work indeed.

cjdavis··on Facebook’s 99%: Later employees may pay almost double the tax rate
Nice straw, man.

Thinking that a progressive tax system is a good idea has nothing to do with being jealous and covetous of those who make more than you. If you disagree with a progressive tax system go right ahead and support your case, but you're not going to do that with bs arguments nobody is making.

cjdavis··on The Greatest Paper Map of the United States You’ll Ever See
At first glance Imus' map is more accurate as well. He has the location of the airport (CVG) south of I-275, and the location of Vandalia, OH west of I-75. NatGeo is wrong on both.

But like moultano said, he missed Newport and Norwood.
