The modern equivalent of paying indulgences to the Catholic Church; the wealthly have always sought ways of justifying the grotesqueries of their lifestyles. Indeed for many, it's the primary labor of their lives.
I went with Readwise because they were a bootstrapped company vs VC-funded Matter, but now I'm starting to wish I went with Matter because they've been shipping meaningful updates more reliably.
Also, I interviewer with Dan from Readwise and he totally ghosted me, so I may be a little bitter about that, ha.
Matter is another paid read-it-later app who's lunch Omnivore is eating, though they seem to be shipping useful features (podcast transcript parsing, send-to-Kindle, etc.) much faster than Readwise.
Tough time to be a for-profit reading app these days, when options like Omnivore exist.
Something you can actually do something with?
I'm a marketing guy, and have started to regret my career path. I've made it to several final rounds in the past year, but only wound up with rejection at the end—at the final stages, it can be real subtle things that lead them to make that final choice of one candidate vs. another.
On top of that, I'm taking care of a toddler full time, since we can't afford a nanny since I got laid off, so I have even less time to dedicate to the job hunt / skill advancement, and honestly I'm so exhausted by the end of the day that I'm too drained to work on projects that require real brainpower. It's been a slog, but I'm hanging in there and not giving up.
Otta.com has been a great, easy resource for job hunting.
However, I also have a 3-year old I'm taking care of who drains me of all my excess time and energy. I can't do any of this stuff. I'm exhausted at the end of the day, and with my 1-2 hours at the end of night after my kid goes to bed, I'm certainly not writing the Great American Novel.
Maybe when he's older I'll have time for a midlife crisis.
At this point, I don't even know how I'd switch back to Android even if I wanted to (and I don't). Once they've got their claws in, they've got you—and you're happy about it.
No wonder their growth and expansion continues.
Amazing how they never release a product that ‘has it all’. They always leave something out, I assume in order to entice future upgrades.
I was fortunately able to takeoff my nostalgia glasses for Breath of the Wild, and similarly it blew me away. Haven’t felt that kind of emotional connection in a very long time.
I almost want to write a book: ‘Zelda Mind, Beginners Mind’
I also grew up with OoT, absolutely obsessed and life-defining in many ways. Now I’m a certified Old, and while BotW didn’t click for me initially, I grew to love it and soon understood it to be one of the greatest games I’ve ever played.
That did require me to consider the context though, and force myself to play it with a type of ‘beginner’s mind’.
A few months ago, I decided to give Ocarina a play via the Nintendo Switch Online N64 emulator and—I couldn’t do it. With modern games to compare it to, the graphics, the frame rate, the controls, etc. was just not a good experience and I had to stop.
Same thing happened with Goldeneye. I can’t believe this was tolerable way back when. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
The kids growing up on BotW/TotK will have the same rose colored glasses for those games as many of us have for OoT.
I can’t wait to get off work today and fire up TotK.
