cody3222··on Show your costs to boost sales
"People said they were 14.2% more likely to buy this chocolate bar when they were shown the version with a cost breakdown."

What people say they would do and what they actually do are 2 very different things.

The conversion rate of actual behavior needs to be tested for this to mean something useful.

cody3222··on What Silicon Valley gets about engineers that traditional companies do not
This feels similar to the "MBA cofounder" profile of someone who has the mindset: if I just had an engineer to build my idea then this would be big.

Every engineer knows it doesn't work that way (but many who charge by the hour w/ consulting may be happy to take the job for a while).

Thank you for sharing your perspective.
cody3222··on Any financial advice for stock-holding employees whose companies just went IPO?
It is recommended to use "dollar cost averaging" while selling your shares. This means selling your shares gradually (assuming you are seeking some diversification). That guards against volatility in the stock price.

cody3222··on You have the right to record police in public, federal court rules
Police actively try to resist this.

I saw something really interesting when getting pulled over by the police a while back (on a boat). When they saw us recording them while they were writing a ticket, they shined a bright flashlight at our camera so that it would ruin the exposure and not capture anything useful. They were very deliberate about this and it was quite effective.

Something does seem wrong about police in public not wanting to be recorded while doing their (taxpayer funded) job and holding extra power over the citizen (a police's word in court generally comes with a special authority).

cody3222··on The Airbnbs
Good points. The most direct answer is that in the last 2 years they invested heavily in Airbnb Experiences. If they skipped this, they would probably be profitable.
cody3222··on The Airbnbs
Would you rather invest in a $1B / year company that has a 10% profit margin and is growing 10% YoY or A company that is doing $1B / year with a 10% loss due to investment in growth but is growing at 30% YoY?

Both options are reasonable investment strategies but for folks who will take a gamble to have a bigger pie, #1 is pretty reasonable. Especially if you can later cut costs and still have that 10% profit margin.

cody3222··on The Airbnbs
It's pretty obvious that collecting a binder full of maxed out credit cards is a bad idea that most would avoid. The point PG is making is one of contrast - despite how dumb this is, they did it anyways (and it happened to pay off). He's not endorsing this action.

Why can't we get back to a place of finding the good in every story/person instead of trying to tell everyone that they're doing something wrong?

Also, holy cow! From credit card debt to billions. It makes the story that much better!

For the same reason gold is an "investment." It's a store of value and a hedge against government controlled currencies such as the US Dollar.

cody3222··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
Amazing, thanks for sharing a source!
cody3222··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
Like janitors, yes. However you can still go a level up, perhaps to support people. And then another level up, like to entry level sales people.
cody3222··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
I absolutely love the historic example of taxes that Benjamin Franklin talks about in his biography: he says he went to all his neighbors' houses and asked if they wanted to chip in a nickel a week and have one of the neighborhood boys sweep the street for everyone's benefit every week. Most said yes and paid the fee. This is literally what tax is in the most simplistic form (let's pool our money to get something we couldn't otherwise have - military, roads, other infrastructure).

Unfortunately, now we live in a world where we just talk about taxation for the sake of putting money into the pot and have no real idea or influence over how that pot of money is spent. A government that can move towards this Benjamin Franklin kind of simplicity of taxes would make its country such a better place.

cody3222··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
I bet it's actually easier to change the median. Often you'll scale a sales or support team (much lower cost than engineer) and these teams can often balloon especially if the company has a direct positive margin on their work (generally the case in sales). Now, 30% of the company is sales/support and there are quite a few options for outsourcing your sales team to a "professional sales company."
cody3222··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
This is such a good point. It's as if the argument is that more taxes is good no matter what rather than knowing what/why you're taxing in the first place.
cody3222··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
Yes, it includes stock options, property, etc. Basically all compensation.

cody3222··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
This raises some interesting questions / side effects:

1) Companies may now have a direct incentive to have their lowest income earners be outsourced/contracted out to boost the median pay amount.

2) It was smart of them to include compensation such as stock options. However if a city starts to expect this income, it will all go away in recessions when CEO's stock options are not valuable. ie more money to the city in boom periods and not much in bust cycles.
