coredog64··on RealPage rent-pricing case wraps with nearly $360M to renters
Seattle has more problems than that. They recently lost an illegal takings case where they used the scorpion and frog defense -- You should have known we'd apply additional affordable housing conditions that make your venture unprofitable.
coredog64··on V100 SXM2 pinout and NVLink reference
v100 caps out at CUDA 12 and the 585 driver. He have like 6 or 8 of them at work (including a few of the 32GB variants) and it's a PITA having to work around that.
coredog64··on Oracle files to sell $20B in new stock, bonds to finance AI buildout
This came up in the last discussion: The TL;DR is that shareholders go to zero, bond holders take a haircut and then own "new Oracle" (Opacle?) that can generally sustain itself with revenues from agressive JDK audits, RDBMS licenses, and ERP/PeopleSoft.

(Opacle == One Poor A-hole Called Larry Ellison)

coredog64··on OccupySaaS
Salesforce isn't just the (shitty) SaaS -- it's an entire ecosystem. This project might peel off some marginal companies via lack of licensing plus a lower cost mom&pop consulting firm. I doubt they're going to get a whale like AWS unless someone with money and a grudge against Benioff is willing to back it.
coredog64··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
Still need heat exchangers for cabin climate control and cooling high energy electronics and even the battery.
coredog64··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
Chase Sapphire Reserve would net that out to approximately $0 on a monthly basis after credits and rebates.
coredog64··on Google open-sources TorchTPU, a native PyTorch back end for TPUs
Even if it's allegedly possible, the devil has always been in the details. It always sucks to find out that there's some quirk of your model architecture that breaks an implicit assumption that underpins the export process.
coredog64··on How Quickly Can the DoD Rebuild and Recast the Munitions Industrial Base?
This is the "defender's dillema" and it has been true for a very long time.
coredog64··on Marshall Islands Stick Chart
There is also "The Last Navigator", written by Steve Thomas (of "This Old House" fame).
coredog64··on Banks are now trying to offload the AI data center debt they just underwrote
Everyone is salivating at the prospect of One Rich A-hole Called Larry Ellison getting his come-uppance, but this is the correct take. Oracle without cloud is still a profitable (if much smaller) business that can continue on for quite a while. Larry (along with everyone else holding $ORCL) gets hosed, but corporations will still continue to get extortion requests couched as "opportunities to license Java 8"
coredog64··on Banks are now trying to offload the AI data center debt they just underwrote
The trigger in Margin Call was not that they could not assess the risk, it was that they were improperly assessing the risk, had taken too much risk onboard, and the downside of the risk was more than the value of the firm.
coredog64··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
> the way budgeting for new hires and the hiring process works, the people actually deciding who to hire aren’t really incentivized to do that anyway.

Laughs in ESG. Companies stopped reporting this in 2024, but go look at prior year results compared to US demographics.

My $0.02 here is that AAPI and African applicants have crowded out ADOS and Hispanics when you look at corporate demographics.

coredog64··on A Cop's Case for Flock
Is a felony considered "solved" when the perp is caught and released on a much lower change?
coredog64··on A Cop's Case for Flock

coredog64··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
I also have a MBP from 2015 and have a recent OS install via OCLP. With only an i5 and 8GB it's slow to start, but once everything is going it's a reasonable UX if I stick to Safari.
coredog64··on PSSA: A non-transformer language model written from scratch in Rust
I would argue that we need a `torch[stubs]` package (or similar) that doesn't install any form of libtorch. The CPU version of libtorch is 160MB compressed and 400MB extracted.
coredog64··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
After being heard to exclaim "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?", Henry II subsequently explained that the 4 knights each came to their own individual decisions about how best to deploy their swords.
coredog64··on Banks and Credit Unions to Team Up Against Apple Pay Fees
Having been a customer of a government run postal bank, I'm going to hard disagree.
coredog64··on Allow Carriers on Planes
The trade-off here is that there's at least one instance where a protocol gap and a locked door led to intentional CFIT (Germanwings 9525)
coredog64··on Allow Carriers on Planes
If you're comparing HSR to air travel with post 9/11 security then there's a a moderate number. However, once you have HSR that moves a significant amount of people, you WILL get post 9/11 security there as well, taking the number to approximately zero.
coredog64··on Oracle cites 'force majeure' to shield itself on controversial data center
Oracle is more than Java and an RDBMS. You cannot throw a rock without hitting a Fortune 500 company running PeopleSoft and/or the Oracle ERP.
coredog64··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
> The elephant in the room

People may or may not find it interesting to research the history of this phrase and what it replaced.

coredog64··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
> If they were only allowed to offer one type of ticket at one price, it would mostly benefit richer passengers while pricing the poorest passengers out of air travel.

I'm sold, how do we put this in the Constitution?

coredog64··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
You just triggered my PTSD. Worked in a gas station in college and changing over the till was a PITA -- I had to account for every cent, could be written up over 50 cents (too much or too little) and it was always this crazy dance to change over when we were busy since it messed with the counts.

coredog64··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
Separating in flight is a very tricky problem that requires massive amounts of testing and can go very wrong.
coredog64··on What if everything we know about recycling is wrong?
> Plus the Solo cups are transported over a great distance as well, between the fuel and packaging it could easily triple their carbon costs.

As opposed to ceramic mugs that just materialize in your house? Not sure about you, but I don't have a dilithium powered transporter in my kitchen.

coredog64··on FBI Probes Service Selling 153M+ Drivers Licenses
They're typically stored as "tokenized" values. The tokenized version shares the type and the last 4 digits (so that you can share it with the customer to help them identify the card). You buy this capability from vendors and IIRC there's like 3 or 4 common vendors in the marketplace.
coredog64··on I used AWS cognito for a startup. I wouldn't do it again
"sucks" was originally a homophobic pejorative. Languages evolve, sometimes very rapidly.
coredog64··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
Have been considering a used M1 but I'm concerned that I'm going to get flash storage that's been thrashed to within an inch of it's life by someone running it as a poorly configured inference host.
