cpressland··on Tether: iMessage, SMS, etc. on Linux
For me this is the last piece of the puzzle keeping me on macOS. I’ll give it a proper test later and if it works as described I’ll be ordering a Framework 13 Pro.
cpressland··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
I’m in the process of migrating from Zigbee (Z2M) to Matter over Thread (Apple HomePods + Matter Server).

My Zigbee network was a mishmash of different vendors all of which had their own failure rates and quirks, Aqara having by far the highest failure rate and complexity.

My new Ikea (Thread) based setup has had absolutely zero issues so far and fingers crossed it doesn’t start suffering as I scale it out. That said, it is noticeably slower than Zigbee, but we’re talking 50ms > 250ms. Which is more than acceptable.

cpressland··on WireguardTCP: WireGuard over TCP
Mildly off topic but I absolutely adore this website. That said, I can’t think of any situations where this’d be useful for me.
cpressland··on Show HN: Remux – an open-source tmux workspace designed for iPhone
Can anybody suggest a good terminal for iOS? I’ve used iSH a fair amount in the past but that hasn’t had an update in three years. I’m mainly just looking for tools like curl, dig, ping etc.
cpressland··on Pondering routing more of my traffic via nodes outside the UK
I’m already using policy based routing on UniFi to send OSA censored websites, imgur for example, via Mullvad VPN - it works for the most part, but for any IPv6 websites it completely breaks as UniFi doesn’t support policy based routes for IPv6.

If the government blocks Mullvad then I’ll just switch to Wireguard on a Helsinki based VPS via Hetzner.

cpressland··on Imgur geo-blocked the UK, so I geo-unblocked my network
To be clear, the rest of the OS supports IPv6, just the WireGuard VPN doesn’t. Disappointing all the same.
cpressland··on Imgur geo-blocked the UK, so I geo-unblocked my network
The only downside is this doesn’t work if you have IPv6 enabled as UniFi Network still allows those to bypass the VPN.

I ended up making a long list of firewall rules to block specific sites IPv6 ranges, which worked until I hit cloudflare backed sites.

I’m really hoping UniFi start supporting IPv6 WireGuard soon.

cpressland··on Tailscale Peer Relays
I was literally looking for a solution for this over the weekend and ended up with a very quirky setup for my Kubernetes Operator.

Now I can rip all that out and use this! Bravo!

cpressland··on uBlock Origin Lite beta version for Safari
I currently use Wipr on macOS and iOS. I’ll give this a spin, however, what are the biggest downsides of the MV3 variant over the original MV2?
cpressland··on Commodore OS 3.0 Released
I am a huge fan of the Commodore 64 and have built my own using modern replacement components and new-old stock with help from other retro computer fans in the office.

But the Commodore 64x and Commodore OS don’t mirror the spirit of 8bit micros. Hardware hacking, direct access to the CPU etc. The Commander X16 is probably the only true “modern” hackable computer in my opinion.

I just hope future generations can experience the power of completely open hardware and as a species we don’t “forget” how computers actually work.

cpressland··on Apple takes UK to court over 'backdoor' order
This is correct - but I’d rather my law enforcement had a pre-existing reason to investigate me rather than just stumbling upon something in random hidden searches. Innocent until proven guilty is key here.

I have nothing to hide, but I’m still not giving you access to my photo library.

cpressland··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
Any sources? I’d be keen to see if I can help out, even if only financially.
cpressland··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
I have seen this in the past, but I figured it was mostly abandonware given the lack of recent commits. I’ll install it and check it out though, thanks for the suggestion.
cpressland··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
I’d love a project like this, but for Red Alert 2. It works great on my Steam Deck but often stutters on larger battles. A modern, native, Linux port would be amazing.
cpressland··on Google.com search now refusing to search for FF esr 128 without JavaScript
While I couldn’t find a better document: https://www.tomsguide.com/computing/search-engines/google-is... describes how non-Google search engines cannot get new results from Reddit.
cpressland··on Show HN: AutoPiP – Safari extension for automatic Picture-in-Picture mode
This is amazing - I’ve not had a chance to test this yet but if it works as described then this is something I’ve been needing without realising it.

Hopefully you’ll be able to get this on the Mac App Store at some point, I’d gladly pay for this.

Edit: alternatively Homebrew / Nix.

cpressland··on Show HN: Minimal, customizable new tab for Chrome/Firefox
Any guides for that? My blank page feels like a flash bang going off sometimes.
cpressland··on UK to finish with coal power after 142 years
At least it’s still lower on average than renewables at the moment [1]. I’m not sure what the current state of Nuclear Reactor construction is like, but hopefully we get some come online soon.

cpressland··on Raspberry Pi is now a public company
As somebody with very little understanding of the business world: why would a seemingly successful organisation like this become a public company? What benefits are there?
cpressland··on Email notifications for Hacker News comment replies
This is great! But I’m not keen that the site isn’t using HTTPS by default, nor the links in the verification emails.
cpressland··on Nearly all Nintendo 64 games can now be recompiled into native PC ports
I’m pretty sure Linux is natively supported via N64Recomp: https://github.com/Mr-Wiseguy/N64Recomp

An example of this can be found here: https://github.com/Mr-Wiseguy/Zelda64Recomp?tab=readme-ov-fi...

cpressland··on Pack: A new container format for compressed files
Had the same issue, plus I think one of my Safari extensions was hiding a cookie banner so half the page was just “dark”. A more mobile friendly view is absolutely needed.
cpressland··on Garnet – A new remote cache-store from Microsoft Research
This looks really good. I hope ultimately this replaces the “Azure Cache for Redis” resource. It’s slow, it’s a fork of Redis made to run on Windows, and it takes nearly an hour to create an instance of it.
cpressland··on GitHub is preparing for IPv6 support for Github.com
No, he’s right. Sixteen singular addresses. And those a quite expensive for what they are.
cpressland··on Microsoft Copilot iOS App
Works fine here (UK), just takes me straight to login.microsoftonline.com.
cpressland··on Swift Shift makes moving/resizing windows on macOS much easier and faster
Been trying this out for the last few hours, other than a minor issue associated with screenshots, this is awesome!
cpressland··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
Multi Account Containers don’t sync with Firefox Sync. I assigned hundreds of websites to various containers only to lose them all when I rebuilt my Mac. Safari, Chrome, Edge all have this functionality and until Mozilla add this, Firefox is DOA for me.
cpressland··on Ferret: A Multimodal Large Language Model
Finally, some decent competition for Not Hotdog!
cpressland··on Podman Desktop 1.6 released: Even more Kubernetes and Containers features
I might look at switching our users over to Podman, considerably less bloat than Docker Desktop. Installing Docker Desktop is a PITA via MDM as it requires the user to have admin rights on first launch (unless they follow additional steps)
