criddell··on MS Paint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Does that turn it into a server or service?
criddell··on MS Paint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
> An unauthenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted packet to an affected service over the network.

What server is MS Paint running or what services does it provide?

Edit: Apparently you can use it to print an image from the command-line. Is that how this is being exploited?

Good luck to the banks.
criddell··on Study estimates 75% of NFL players who died over 15-year span had CTE
Why can't CTE be diagnosed until after death? Do the lesions not show up in scans?
criddell··on Could a modern chess engine on a Pentium have defeated Kasparov in 1996?
Great analysis. Thanks for taking the time to write it out.
criddell··on Could a modern chess engine on a Pentium have defeated Kasparov in 1996?
I understand about Turing machines.

For chess though, there are time constraints. The 386 is a lot slower. Is it fast enough?

criddell··on Could a modern chess engine on a Pentium have defeated Kasparov in 1996?
I wonder how far back you can go? Could a modern chess engine run on a Cray 1? 386? 68k?
criddell··on Katamari Damacy but it's The Met collection
For me, it's the music. I'll have those songs in my head for days after playing.

Also, the items in the game are very artfully arranged.

This version (the part I played) just dumps everything on the floor and the music is lifeless.

criddell··on BYD sold more EVs last month than the US did all quarter, topping 300,000
I've been seeing more and more JAC small pickup trucks (diesel though, not electric) around Austin lately. I think people are bringing them up from Mexico.
criddell··on Private Jet plane crashes in Florida
Mythbusters did this with a sled going "only" 650 mph and I would call the result instantly (but not entirely) pulverized:

criddell··on Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half
Do they exist?
criddell··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
Reagan was mostly known as a film actor.

The other performer was, of course, Trump. He had a TV show.

criddell··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
Three times. Nixon was a stage actor and in fact that’s how he met his wife, Pat (she was also an actor).

> What kind of article shows you a newsletter pop-up as soon as you load the page?

One that knows the more you read, the less inclined you are to want more.

criddell··on Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half
They may need some kind of backup, depending on where they are in the world. A lot of heat pumps don’t work well below -20F / -30C.
criddell··on Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half
Making electricity cheaper is exponentially easier than getting people in a democracy to choose short term pain for themselves on a politicized issue.

The difficult part is that as demand for petroleum products drop, they will get cheaper (at least initially). Electricity costs need to fall faster than oil prices as oil demand drops.

criddell··on Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half
Since they are comparing to the cost for a month of gas, I would assume it’s per month.
criddell··on Casio Watches of the 1980s
When somebody says:

> They represented years of hard work, sacrifice, aspiration, and the dignity of finally being able to afford something that was genuinely well made. Something that would last. Something that could be passed down.

you're probably not thinking plastic Casio. Casio are great watches that are accessible to just about everybody on the planet.

> These weren't merely consumer products. They were milestones. They represented years of hard work, sacrifice, aspiration, and the dignity of finally being able to afford something that was genuinely well made. Something that would last. Something that could be passed down.

That’s basically what Rolex and other Swiss watchmakers say about their products.

criddell··on US tech stocks see sharp falls over AI cost fears
How well are the AI companies stocked up on Aerons and other nice chairs? I'm guessing a lot of us have chairs dating back to the dotcom bust 20 years ago and could use an upgrade...
criddell··on US tech stocks see sharp falls over AI cost fears
> In 2008 the USA managed to export the shit assets generated by the mortgage boom, mostly to Europe

I didn't know about this. How did it work?

criddell··on Patrick Stewart has died
My dad had Lewy body dementia when he died and it was awful. I'm really sorry to hear that Stewart and his family had to deal with that.

That page talks about what to do if somebody with LBD is thinking about suicide. After seeing what that disease does, interfering with those plans seems inhumane to me.

criddell··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
Are you also opposed to school lunch programs that provide free or very low cost food to students?
criddell··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
I had a similar reaction but after thinking a bit, I can see some merit in the idea.

I wouldn't mind if my mom had access to a free grocery delivery service. She's 80 and has very bad vision.

criddell··on The US added a record 20.2 GWh of battery storage in just 3 months

criddell··on New York Times adds more AI features to its Cooking app. Users aren't thrilled
> One consistent thread was that cooking is supposed to present you with difficulties and challenges and the whole point is figuring them out by yourself.

That’s such a dumb thing to say. When I’m making something for me and my wife, I want a recipe that is idiot proof.

criddell··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
It might not be the right machine for you and that's ok.

If I needed one of these for my work (I don't) and was going to be using it every day for the next two years, I think I could justify it. It would be about $4 / day which is within reach. Add in the fact that Mac's have decent resale value and the daily expense could be quite a bit less.

criddell··on An examination of lost firefly species of the US and Canada
I live in the suburbs of Austin and we get them around our backyard. On nights when they were most active I would go wake up my kids and we would watch them for a while.
criddell··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
A lot of parents are not great parents and can't be relied on to make those kinds of calls. They are not going to put their foot down and it's up to all of us to help make crack less accessible.

Twenty years ago it was easier to be a good parent.
