dangayle··on I also filed the corners off my MacBook
I bought a 1973 Fender Jazzmaster that was immaculate and should have been my forever guitar. I was so afraid of "ruining the value" that I sold it. I couldn't play it, I was so paranoid. It got into my head. Instead, I ended up buying a '65 AVRI Jazzmaster body and put on an EGC aluminum neck and a Tuffset bridge. The price was about 2/3 of the vintage one, but I have no qualms about playing this one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
dangayle··on Gmail thinks I'm stupid, so I left
I'll be the "Ackchyually" person for those who don't know. Proton tweeted support for a _single_ thing the Trump administration did, on a subject that mattered to Proton. Otherwise, they have a strict neutrality position, and their CEO responded to the accusations on Reddit.

dangayle··on Google Antigravity
Just throw it onto the pile, I guess
dangayle··on Ask HN: Does anyone still use IRC?
I love IRC, particularly #freenode. I really detest having to first search out then go through the whole process of signing up for yet another Slack group.
dangayle··on Ask HN: How do you get a job as a product manager?
Thank you, I'll check that out.
dangayle··on Every Major Advertising Group Is Blasting Apple for Blocking Cookies in Safari
As a newspaper developer, let me tell you, a horrible flaming death isn't good enough for it.
dangayle··on Cybersecurity Incident Involving Consumer Information
I'm not at all surprised, but I am disappointed (to say the least).
dangayle··on Cybersecurity Incident Involving Consumer Information
Oh nice. A company that does nothing but collect personal information. I’m already in their identity protection program, so I'm a little nonplussed at this.
dangayle··on Publishing with Apache Kafka at The New York Times
Literally teams of interns manually re-typing old articles from microfilm. OCR isn't quite there yet, not for dealing with the ways newspapers and newspaper design has changed over the years. You'd get the text, but there would be no guarantees that it that story bylines, headlines, factboxes, and photos match. Our own digital archives go back to 1994, anything before that is manual input.
dangayle··on Publishing with Apache Kafka at The New York Times
One of the biggest issues is that a lot of newsrooms have zero control over their CMS, because they're owned by a corporate entity that dictates IT decisions from afar, slowly and with much gnashing of teeth.

Family-owned papers like the one I work at (The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, WA) are the one of the few news orgs that could actually put something like this into production within this century, but even we still have to deal with manpower issues.

dangayle··on 24/192 Music Downloads Are Very Silly Indeed (2012)
It's also great if you you're doing a bunch of time/pitch mangling.
dangayle··on 24/192 Music Downloads Are Very Silly Indeed (2012)
Probably compressing the living daylights out of it. By squashing it down, they flatten the amplitude in the music and things with a lot of transients (by definition, drums) suffer. It results in a lot of fatigue, because the higher the compression the more it turns into white noise, essentially.

Sirius XM might be one of the last to standardize on a reasonable LUFS setting of 12 to 16.

dangayle··on The Lost Pleasure of Reading Aloud
It's been long established that reading aloud to your children is one of the best ways to advance their early learning. (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2267171)
dangayle··on Transmit 5
What timing! I was just telling my coworker this morning that Transmit was the best money I ever spent on tools I use for web development. I've been using Transmit for a long, long time and I still feel like I haven't fully utilized it.

Instabuy for me.

dangayle··on Can AI Write Pop Songs?
The second this happens, will people tune out and revolt against it, making it no longer "pop"? What will be the post-AI pop music?
dangayle··on 70% Repetition in Style Sheets: Data on How We Fail at CSS Optimization
I use Tachyons for 99% of my styles, writing minimal amounts of highly specific styles. My productivity has gone way up and I no longer have to worry about CSS pretty much at all.
dangayle··on Instagram Makes a Smooth Move to Python 3
This is what I encourage all of our team to do, it just seems like a no brainer. Having stray "testing" strings pop up in our logs without any source is hella annoying.
dangayle··on WSJ Ends Google Users' Free Ride, Then Fades in Search Results
This is a false dichotomy. Abandoning a website because of a paywall !== bad user experience. The UX can be fine, but the user may be poor. Many websites have restricted logins and perfectly acceptable UX.
dangayle··on WSJ Ends Google Users' Free Ride, Then Fades in Search Results
A time machine is the only solution. As a web developer for a family-owned newspaper who recently removed our failure of a metered-paywall, the only solution I've been able to come up with is a time machine that sends a killer robot back to 1995/1996 and remove the incompetents industry wide who decided to give away their expensive to produce content for free.

Isn't this one of the stated features of the Tor browser?

dangayle··on Tips for Building High-Quality Django Apps at Scale
In my opinion that book should be the starting point. The official tutorials have you way deep in the weeds with database migrations and stuff before you even have a basic understanding of where you're at and why. Worst "hello world" ever.
dangayle··on Tips for Building High-Quality Django Apps at Scale
Have you checkout out O'Reilly's Lightweight Django book? It basically goes through all of this, starting with a single file Django app.
dangayle··on Long-dormant bacteria and viruses in ice are reviving as climate warms
Drilling in the frozen north and releasing an ancient monster is the subject of the first episode of the revamped Mystery Science Theater on Netflix.
dangayle··on The licensing program for MP3-related patents has been terminated
Does this mean that there should be no more need for Audacity to download the MP3 encoder from sourceforge?
dangayle··on Modern “Hackintoshes” show that Apple should probably just build a Mac tower
I run a Hackintosh for my home studio and it simply comes down to cost/performance ratio. I can build a legit Hackintosh for less than the cost of a Mac Mini. EVEN IF they offered a new Mac tower, I'd probably still build my own.

dangayle··on Computer algorithm added 82 mill amendments to the Italian gov reformation bill
>> In an effort to sink the project, the right-wing Northern League party used a computer algorithm to unleash 82 million amendments to the bill when it went before the Senate last year.

That's a crazy thing. Would something like that be possible in the US gov't or any state governments?

dangayle··on Diamonds are Bullshit (2013)
Oh, yeah. She would never leave me over something like that, but I definitely got the look. If it was a matter of money, I know she would totally understand. But in her mind and essentially every girl I've ever met, it's a diamond they want. Even if it's a small one, it's symbolic.
dangayle··on Diamonds are Bullshit (2013)
I tried to explain all that to my gf, but she was having none of it. It was either a diamond or hit the road, Jack.

Proposed to her last Saturday with a shiny diamond ring, she's now my fiance, so I think it was worth it.
