danity··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Time for Canada to cozy up closer to China, that'll end well for them I'm sure.
danity··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
Take anything on electrek.co with a grain of salt, it is a wildly anti-Tesla, pro-China website.
danity··on OpenAI is building a social network?
Just what the world needs, another social network!
danity··on Dropbox announces 20% global workforce reduction
There is a tendency for managers at big tech companies to want to hire regardless of need and "build an empire", so they can then say on LinkedIn that they managed n number of people. Then they will move to another big tech company, rinse and repeat. At these companies, the more people you manage is translated by higher ups to responsibility and salary. There isn't much reward to keep a team small, focused, and efficient.
danity··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
I greatly admired her dignity, strength, and no-nonsense approach over the years. RIP.
danity··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
The U.S. should pass a law rather than relying on a court decision. Roe v Wade was a poor decision from a legal standpoint. For example, why were abortions in the first trimester considered due process under the 14th amendment but in the last 2 trimesters they were not? The court should not be creating the law, the legislature should be doing that. Pass a law in the U.S. legislature and that will take precedence over state law (see the Supremacy Clause in the U.S. Constitution).
danity··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Portal 3, Witcher 4
danity··on My Stripe Tax Story
Sad to see Stripe fall to the bean counters instead of staying focused on customers. They were coming out with some cool innovations a few years ago. Even "don't be evil" Google is moving in this direction. Not sure why companies always evolve this way. Boeing is another prime example. Apple has maintained its focus on the customer and thrived, bucking the trend, which seems like it would be motivation for others to stay focused on the customer. Especially given when Apple hired the Pepsi guy to run things in the bean counter way, the company nearly died.
danity··on A career ending mistake
A long time ago, after interviewing for months, I finally landed my first job as a developer. It was VERY hard to get your foot in the door back then. On my first day, I was given someone's old computer that had a bunch of junk on it. While cleaning it up, I accidentally deleted all files on the company's file share. Shortly after, I started hearing murmurs of missing files and then, panicking inside, realized what I had done.

The IT guy came by and asked me if I had done it, but I played dumb. He knew it was me but he couldn't prove it, so I survived that one. He gave me dirty looks from that point forward though. I surely would have been fired on the spot if the truth were uncovered.

danity··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
Very true, just like when Google bought DoubleClick. I couldn't believe that went through.
danity··on California moves to recommend delaying algebra to 9th grade statewide
There are more white children living in poverty than black children: https://datacenter.kidscount.org/data/tables/44-children-in-... If we want to help the most children we can, we should remove race from the equation.
danity··on Willingness to look stupid
Dan Luu interprets confusion from his lack of explanation as people thinking he is stupid. It almost seems the other way around, Dan Luu is the one who thinks other people are stupid (Apple Store clerk, insurance salesperson) because they don't know what he knows.
danity··on Congratulations, Mini, you made the stupidest turn signals ever
Lighten up, have a little fun. embrace quirks. Not everything needs to be generic and cleansed of all personality.
danity··on The work-from-home future is destroying bosses' brains
One thing I have disliked about remote work is that more and more meetings are being recorded, and just regular meetings, not presentations and such. I don't recall having my team meetings recorded ever before COVID. It feels like Big Brother is watching, and definitely changes the dynamic of a discussion in a bad way.
danity··on How Intuitive Are Macs Really?
Hooray, another Apple-hating circle jerk post!
danity··on EU says Apple’s App Store breaks competition rules after Spotify complaint
The main difference with Microsoft is that Apple does not have a monopoly in phones like Microsoft had with PCs. Apple phones make up only 13% of the phone market.
danity··on Apple, Epic, and the App Store
What do you call the Play Store? What do you call Android? Talk about false equivalence, you’ve just demonstrated that.
danity··on Eric Schmidt Steps Down from Alphabet’s Board of Directors
He's lucky he ruled when he did. Nowadays he'd have been exposed and destroyed for his sexual harrassment (which is why he stepped down originally) and other horrible behavior.
