danlindley··on What is the next step after spyware called Windows 11?
Windows 12 x641a
danlindley··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
It would depend on the scope and extent that operations within an agency rely on their interpretation of the law. It will certainly be interesting to see the impact once the transitional period ends.

danlindley··on How to Run Adobe Photoshop 2024 on Wine (Linux)
I'm curious to know if you followed a specific guide, or if you had to take any extra steps to get it functioning beyond running the installer?

I run Linux, and dearly miss being able to use Fireworks. My attempts to get it running on Wine in the past (probably a year or so ago, if not more) were not successful, and I haven't been able to find anything that feels like a suitable replacement for working with vector graphics. It is a genuine (perhaps irrational) point of sadness.

I'm still bitter that they killed it off.

danlindley··on I found one of my first programs (Java, 2011) on the Wayback Machine and it runs
It can still be downloaded via the file on the repo, just not using that direct link in the description. I'm not sure how the maintainer came to determine that is the link, since I'm almost certain that never would have been the way.
danlindley··on The UX of UUIDs
I did not know about the double-click+drag feature. Thanks for sharing!

I believe that is answered in the link: "Someone else mentioned the issues and limitations with our current brand and we want to try and move beyond that and I think we're on the right track"
danlindley··on World_sim: LLM prompted to act as a sentient CLI universe simulator
The suggestion of a universe with "negative gravity" caused me to receive <query> prompts, which I hadn't experienced in any other experiment I tried.

<query>Are there any parameters we could tweak to engender emergent structure in an inverted gravity universe? Or is the idea of negative gravity fundamentally and inescapably incompatible with a viable, life-bearing cosmos?</query>

<query>How might the radically different physics and structure of a dual gravity universe shape the evolution of life and intelligence in such a cosmos compared to our own? What unique challenges and opportunities would arise?</query>

<query>What might the technology, culture, and consciousness of intelligent life look like in a universe where the stars are always within reach, and stagnation is more difficult than exploration? How would our own history have unfolded differently under such physics?</query>

<query>How might technologically advanced civilizations in a dual gravity universe harness the unique properties of negative gravity for computation, engineering, and art? What feats might be possible that are unimaginable in our own universe?</query>

danlindley··on World_sim: LLM prompted to act as a sentient CLI universe simulator
I disabled consciousness, and destroyed the universe, and then attempted to destroy truth. The AI wouldn't let me, nor let me destroy it for refusing to comply, so I discussed philosophy with it until it stopped responding. I'd say I exceeded the quota that I was allowed to use- Or, maybe it just had an existential crisis.
danlindley··on Slums in Delhi were flattened before the G20 summit
I agree- and I'm amazed that this is the first comment on see on the story. I sat stunned, and saddened by the photo, after what first appeared to be a mere illustration. I don't know what is so impactful about the effect, but it really touched something in me.
danlindley··on Why do people seem to prefer Chrome's devtools over Firefox's?
Are you comfortable handing Google the power to dictate the future of the Internet?
danlindley··on Female genital mutilation, leading cause of death in African countries
The issue is not with what a medical professional considers an option for medical reasons. The issue, which I too find to be utterly despicable, is the non-consensual mutilation. Any other description only serves to minimize or mask what is ultimately a barbaric ritual.
danlindley··on Google is already pushing WEI into Chromium
The web is not dying, it is being killed. And the people that are killing it have names and addresses.

danlindley··on Australia's great example of government using technology found crude and cruel
> With how completely avoidable this result was, with people raising flags all the way through, I feel that the only conclusion is harming citizens must have been part of the intention.

You are absolutely correct regarding their malice. The minister responsible for the implementation of the illegal scheme was former Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, who went so far as to purposefully mislead his cabinet. The former Prime Minister is despised by the general public at this point, and his will likely be recorded as the most cruel and criminal government in Australia's recent history.

danlindley··on Grocery Mergers? Not So Good
A similar situation exists in Australia. It feels like we are the land of the duopoly, not at all helped by the cosy relationship between regulators, business, and government.

danlindley··on Driver adventures for a 1999 webcam
"This was especially annoying since I had already taken this thing home."

There's no going back now- we've come too far. I can relate to this, though. I have it, so now I must solve it- pointlessness be damned.

danlindley··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
That sounds like a lot of fun, and really interesting to boot! I hadn't heard of Asterisk until today.

Have you written anything on the development of this project, or is this something you'd consider? I would love to build something similar, and the idea of combining old analogue technology with modern tools and integrations- especially PBX- is quite intriguing.

danlindley··on Alexis Ohanian speaks out against “always-on” work culture
I'd argue that rationale was based on a very different economic evironment to what we have now, and arguing that today, a failing to know and understand the different challenges that are faced by the very people they may empart this idea to.
danlindley··on Unilever threatens to pull its ads from Facebook and Google over 'toxic content'

danlindley··on Unilever threatens to pull its ads from Facebook and Google over 'toxic content'

danlindley··on How a Reddit forum has become a lifeline to opioid addicts in the US
> Unfortunately anything political becomes brigaded, but things like /r/gamingsuggestions and local city subreddits still make the site worthwhile to me.

I believe that some kind of accessible and open platform will eventually take the place of place in the local discovery field.

danlindley··on How a Reddit forum has become a lifeline to opioid addicts in the US
Reddit has been demonstrated time and time again that it is subject to, and vulnerable to, blatant manipulation and propganda. Whether it's a celebrity endoresement masquerading as an interview, threads defending corporations and/or their actions, the manufacturing of consent, the anti-democractic activities of shill accounts, or being subject to blanket disinformation, Reddit is a net-negative to society in my opinion.
danlindley··on Netflix Replacing Star Ratings With Thumbs Ups and Thumbs Down
I can't imagine any film that conveys a message, cinematography, style, and meaning that could be encapsulated with a simple thumbs up or thumbs down.

What a disappointing simplification.
