daveidol··on Show HN: Auto Dismiss Mac OS "Allow <app> to find devices on local networks?"
C'mon they meant 'executable' more broadly, not literally a '.exe' Windows program.
daveidol··on Discord will soon let anyone find public server messages through Google
This is only for public servers. If you were using a nickname on _public servers_ that was easy to identify before, then that was already a big mistake.

And this feature does not affect old messages - only ones after December 2026.

daveidol··on Way to Play Super Mario 64: On Apple Vision Pro
That is outdated now. You can run emulators on iOS and you’ll find plenty in the App Store. The only limitation right now is no JIT, which is a problem for more modern console emulation.
daveidol··on Ousted Savannah police officer gave ICE agent husband access to Flock system
This seems like a pretty abstract claim to me. What does "protect the people" mean vs "whatever makes the rich people happy"? There are laws on the books which the police enforce.

Now, I agree that the police are not your friends, and they are incentivized to find crimes when there may not really be any at times, but I disagree with the notion that they are simply the lapdogs of the wealthy. In fact, it seems like in a lot of places in California it's the law-abiding, wealthier citizens that are hassled most by the police for minor infractions, because they know they can actually extract revenue from them.

daveidol··on Tesla Roadster
Agreed. It’s really helpful and refreshing to see the facts like this without resorting to emotional claims.
daveidol··on Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr
I rarely use Windows these days but that is the first setting I always change. MacOS hides a lot of them too by default, sadly.
daveidol··on Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers
Yep I played via “Classic mode” until Apple removed support
daveidol··on Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers
This is super exciting! Also would love to see the code when you share it
daveidol··on Cloudflare acquires Deno
Can you elaborate on why it was a “miss”?
daveidol··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
How would macOS know if the request is coming from the URL bar or not in some untrusted software?

These permissions are clearly all-or-nothing, or else they wouldn’t work.

daveidol··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
You raise an interesting point. Although wouldn’t Anthropic be the best experts on when a model would be most applicable or likely to falter?

I guess my opinion would really depend on the exact wording and details of the arrangement. Lots of people jumping in with strong stances based on pretty limited details.

daveidol··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
No it’s Product Marketing Manager. A common title and one part of the holy trinity (PM, EM, PMM) at bigger companies.
daveidol··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
That one gets a worse rep than I think it deserves.

You could always pay the one time fee for heated seats like in the past. It was just an option if you don’t want to pay upfront.

daveidol··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
And of course those criticisms can and should be dismissed if the creators goals are purely to maximize engagement
daveidol··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
Yeah, sadly most people don’t know or don’t care most likely.

Unless it’s in their face causing them friction they will just continue to use it as an appliance.

daveidol··on How AI text watermarking works
Yeah if kids are sufficiently motivated all it takes is one vial YouTube tutorial.
daveidol··on Force-Fed by ICE
I don't see the relation here, to be honest. How is immigration enforcement about racists wanting to be lazy?

The people paying illegal immigrants minimal wages under the table are far more analogous to slave owners in my mind.

daveidol··on The Warp Agent CLI
So this is a competitor to something like OpenCode or Pi? I suspect for most developers, they are using Claude Code or Codex CLI mainly just so they don't have to pay-per-token and can use the subscription products - which I assume can't be done with Warp Agent?
daveidol··on All major LLMs are lib-left. Even Grok, half the time
I think you may be confusing 'the right' more broadly with the current Republican party. There are absolutely coherent conservative viewpoints that mirror/oppose those that we consider 'the left', which aren't "reactionary" by nature.
daveidol··on All major LLMs are lib-left. Even Grok, half the time
What is "reality"? Is there really any such thing as ground truth for most things?
daveidol··on Scriptc by Vercel: TypeScript-to-Native compiler, no JavaScript engine in binary
It’s too bad we didn’t start out with Deno
daveidol··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
This is an absurd statement. A “kill list”? Please.
daveidol··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
The blame should be on Microsoft and LG, both.
daveidol··on Mark Zuckerberg's biggest legal nightmare yet could cost Meta $1.4T
Hasn’t that always been the way? A little Super PAC and some lobbying to grease the wheels
daveidol··on Jobs and Software Is Fucked
Sound advice, honestly, especially the "no I'm always the victim attitude" piece.

The more politically-charged parts of your comment apply to both sides - it's fine if you have political opinions, but nobody wants them shoved down their throats, or brought up at work. If you come across as someone who is going to put politics over work, or cause conflict, then people aren't going to want to hire you and deal with that.

daveidol··on The AI Hate Progression
Yeah I saw the headline and was interested to read a well-reasoned macro perspective on how and why attitudes have shifted towards AI, misconceptions, predictions on the future, etc.

Instead I got another one-sided unhinged rant that looks straight out of a typical Reddit post.

daveidol··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
Do you do your dev work on the windows machine (referenced in the docs), or do you remotely access it from a separate machine? I ask because I have a RTX 3090 kicking around in a gaming desktop, but I don't use it for any dev work (I use a Macbook Pro).
daveidol··on Leave Me Behind
Well said. People love to make everything black and white / good and bad. But things are rarely that simple.
daveidol··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
I grew up and live in the southeast. I also lived on the west coast for a decade.

I find your comment completely off base.

daveidol··on US appeals court declares 158-year-old home distilling ban unconstitutional
Seat belt laws are an interesting example though because they only apply when driving on public roads. You can drive your car with no seat belt on a private track all day if you want to.
