dbnoch··on Robinhood is automatically initiating GME sell orders on users' behalf
except for the line where they prevented trading on said stock.
dbnoch··on Launch HN: Seed (YC W21) – A Fully-Managed CI/CD Pipeline for Serverless
Any plans for supporting BAA/HIPAA companies? Congrats on the launch!

dbnoch··on Ask HN: Co-founder wants me to leave but won't entertain a buy out offer
the sad part is that they are right. I was in a similar situation and there really is nothing you can do. They don't own the majority share of the company to make the decision.

It's honestly a terrible situation

dbnoch··on An ex-Googler’s guide to dev tools
Yeah I agree, however its still worth pointing out. OP has been working for their own startup for 7 years and interned at google almost 10 years ago. It's basically using "ex-googler" for clicks.
dbnoch··on Ask HN: How do you cope with mental illness as a founder and/or employee?
appreciate you doing that. vulnerability is seen as a weakness, but it should be seen as a strength and form of empathy. Are their other organizations/resources that you'd recommend that are in this space?
dbnoch··on Deno will stop using TypeScript
I thought the "novice" programmer remark was a pretty cringe-worthy comment.

The original reasons listed by Deno for removing TS had the undertones of "senior engineer who hates certain tech because they didn't use it right". Naturally, their response was to say "you probably don't understand cause you're a novice".

dbnoch··on Deno will stop using TypeScript
I felt like the article and associated google doc were fishing for reasons to remove TS until ry finally mentioned "typescript provides an extra 500 lines and the namespaces make the code harder to reason with (V8 ingests these files directly)". IMO that was the only solid reason for the change.
dbnoch··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (April 2020)
Im curious if anyone has had luck in this kind of thread?
dbnoch··on Ask HN: First hire offered to work part-time – what should I do?
This seems to be a lot of assumptions on what the "candidate" might feel like. TBH, We dont have enough information.

Why would the candidate hedge their bets on risky propositions by working part-time on TWO startups? Wouldn't it be more likely they need a side-gig (backup plan)?

dbnoch··on Ask HN: First hire offered to work part-time – what should I do?
I can emphasize with you, as a first hire is always a tough decision. Having bad first hires can set a company back, make it harder to hire others in the future and be bad for moral (which makes it that much more important).

What an employee does outside of work should not matter in your decision (tons of people have side gigs, for example).

What should matter is the expectations and the output of the employee. If you feel that its important to have someone working full-time, in the office 5 days a week, then I think that's perfectly OK (in the same way that its OK if an organization cannot handle remote teams). This is a decision you would be making. If you wanted 5 days a week, that would disqualify this candidate (at least for now).

IMO (and experience), the lack of commitment is the `three days a week` instead of full-time.

dbnoch··on Docker Hub Hacked – 190k accounts, GitHub tokens revoked, builds disabled
Or fix this 4 year old issue where you cant use 2FA for accounts https://github.com/docker/hub-feedback/issues/358

(Side note: this obviously wouldn't have prevented the current attack)

dbnoch··on Gitlab 11.10 Released
You replied a month ago saying that you downgraded the version and the issue was resolved, is that still not working for you?

EDIT: Fixed spelling of replied

dbnoch··on Um – Create your own man pages so you can remember how to do stuff
I love the idea of this utility (I use TLDR myself) and wonder if there is a way that tldr could be integrated with your tooling https://github.com/tldr-pages/tldr.

I can see that there may be instances where you/your company would like to have internal docs that should not be public and this utility would would work for it

dbnoch··on Show HN: Whiteboardfree – Developer Jobs at Companies That Don't Whiteboard
I have a few friends from large universities (waterloo, stanford) that have left their current job to specifically study for a new job.

My assumption is that there are a lot more people who are studying for these interviews than you think, which is why the proxy is failing (or producing homogeneous results)

dbnoch··on FTC Probing Facebook for Use of Personal Data, Source Says
IMO the point is the origin application. A Campaign App used for that purpose vs. an app that shows you what your face would look like when you were older to swing distorted news.
dbnoch··on Bus Lane Blocked, He Trained His Computer to Catch Scofflaws
In this situation, it is not OPs job to satisfy the mayor. It is this mayor's job to be a representative of the people so IMO the Mayor should have been able to handle hostility and criticism.

The mayors opportunity to partially ignore concerns shows their incompetence towards the issue.

UPDATE I wanted to mention that I totally agree with what you had said. I do not want to blame OP for being concerned and potentially angry

dbnoch··on Fired Google Engineer Loses Diversity Memo Challenge
> What does damore stating a fact that women being more predisposed to more social careers rather than engineering have anything to do with his stance on diversity?

This memo only helps this narrative of 'being predisposed' and that is the issue we are trying to get at.

From your last article: "Ladies, apparently, find the aggressively competitive nature of these subjects too “uninviting,” so they drop out." So many assumptions in those articles that I had to stop reading. Please look up logical fallacies.

dbnoch··on Fired Google Engineer Loses Diversity Memo Challenge
I wont answer the Consider* part of what you said because it's a straw man argument and should be treated as such.

There are more male programmers than female NOW* but that wasn't the case 50 years ago.

Systematic discrimination has been proven as fact, with palpable examples (I shouldnt have to google this for you).

The 'genetic differences' that this memo quoted have been proven wrong by science... making it psuedo-science.

dbnoch··on Opinions on functional programming and OCaml
IMO don't apologize. OPs comment is meant to discredit you and is rude for someone WHO WORKS AT THE SAME COMPANY.

There is a larger issue where the use of "junior front end engineer" means "Don't take this persons opinion seriously".

Your are 1. an engineer 2. work at Facebook. There are far better ways to say "there are other opinions at our company too"

dbnoch··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
Your statement is factually right, however the only way someone can treat this statement is by assuming you are trying to refute the OPs republican claims. Since I can't downvote you, ill just include an explanation for others on why this comment holds no merit.

Ajit was appointed to the chair under Trump (Republican). Ajit was a recommendation from Republican minority lead (at the time) Mcconnell. Ajit has (to my knowledge) always been a republican member of US FCC.

dbnoch··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
I wanted to add that I think everyone's case is different. I had a tenure in Chicago and all of the apartment buildings I lived in were locked to a single ISP. This is very much so a YMMV.
dbnoch··on Alt-social network Gab booted from Google Play Store for hate speech
Can you please post your sources on what you are saying? I'm inclined to say that the opinion of this incident being "potentially from an accident" is extremely misguided.
dbnoch··on Official support for .NET
I just wanted to chime in on this. IMO It will happen more often now, but .NET had/has a higher cost to entry (higher than say, ruby/py/java) which is the real reason why SV startups haven't been on board.

It is arguably also a bad business decision to shell out $$ for a language that isn't used at your company.

dbnoch··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
Until we take away our own biases, the "extra points" for under-represented minorities have to stay.

The example is: Your internal bias is already in effect before you even meet the people you are interviewing. You're only disgusted and aware of the explicit handicap example from your boss.

dbnoch··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
Can we please stop using 'freedom of speech' in this context. Freedom of Speech in itself is from persecution from the Government. It does not apply here.
dbnoch··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
You do see that you are comparing 1. woman being biologically inferior to 2. sports affiliations.

For another example: It would be the same as saying Blacks are inferior to 2. political opinions.

That is NOT OK. It is not a question of being outraged, it is a question of a hostile workplace.

dbnoch··on Stanford Code From Cars That Entered DARPA Grand Challenges
I can agree with that. Even if the usernames (and real names) match members from the team, it is still a little suspicious
dbnoch··on David Bonderman Resigns from Uber Board
While I understand the sentiment... it DOES matter what gender they identify as. Uber's culture issues deal with sexism and harassment towards Women. You need a diverse group for the board and adding white males will not fix their issue.
