dcrazy··on Capital Wants a Monopoly
The Sherman Antitrust Act specifically provides individuals harmed by a monopoly a cause of action to sue in federal court.
dcrazy··on Finland investigate Google over destruction of 250k trees
Trees can also provide soil stability. It’s possible that bulk razing this plot has turned it into a liquefaction zone.
dcrazy··on Finland investigate Google over destruction of 250k trees
You seem intent on arguing that enforcement of this cannot possibly matter. That kind of defeatism often wins Internet brownie points, but is not a useful way of actually being an effective force for change in the world.
dcrazy··on Finland investigate Google over destruction of 250k trees
Even if Google abandons the site and refuses to pay a fine, they’ll have lost all the money they have invested in site surveys, contracts, labor… even the delays alone of making them fulfill the EIS cost them money, not to mention whatever opportunity cost they were trying to minimize by flouting the environmental regulations.

Google is already feeling pain from this.

dcrazy··on Finland investigate Google over destruction of 250k trees
If Finland prohibits them from continuing construction, they don’t get the data center they want, and they have to start over somewhere else.
dcrazy··on Python's experimental JIT to be removed
Is the question whether multiple base classes are part of Python’s spec, or if the ability to assign to `__class__` is part of the spec?
dcrazy··on Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain
It’s the main line, and Toledo is near Madrid.
dcrazy··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Bah, too late to edit but I meant work-for-hire laws, not right-to-work laws.
dcrazy··on Txoko: Basques' traditional feast a gastronomic peek into a culture (2024)
Sorry, you are correct and that is what I meant. The fact that it’s believed to have been spoken on the same land since before Indo-European languages arrived in Europe is what makes it so fascinating to me.
dcrazy··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Meaningless to the investors, including employees with vested RSUs. They got bought out at $54.20, way above the soon-to-become market value.

It was meaningless to Musk for all of about a week, when he came off his ketamine binge and realized what a stupid offer he’d made. But it was a done deal by that point.

According to Reddit[0], it might not have been meaningless to employees with unvested RSUs. They lacked an acceleration clause, so instead of immediately becoming 100% vested at $54.20, the schedule remained intact with a cash payout instead of stock. If the cash payout was relative to current company value, then it was a massive hit.

dcrazy··on Txoko: Basques' traditional feast a gastronomic peek into a culture (2024)
I sadly don’t have anything personal to add on the specific topic of Basque cuisine, but I want to encourage any Indo-European language speaker who even marginally enjoys language to read up on the situation of Basque language (Euskara). It is a language isolate, and the only extant language in mainland Europe that does not descend from Proto-Indo-European. The Basque language survived in the sliver of land at the fringes of the Roman and Moorish conquests.
dcrazy··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
No, Musk designed an offer that forced the board to sell to uphold its fiduciary duty to shareholders. (And then famously got cold feet about it, but it was so well-designed that he couldn’t shirk it.)

The valuation crashing back to reality after going private, and therefore being measured by its intrinsic worth rather than whatever the latest trader paid for a share of it, was an inevitable but meaningless consequence.

dcrazy··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
There is plenty of room for uncertainty where promissory estoppel and right-to-work laws intersect.
dcrazy··on Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
You cannot rely on the model to never make mistakes. You need deterministic controls around the model. I believe that’s what the article’s authors are selling.
dcrazy··on Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
> By that logic you can't trust any model

Correct!

dcrazy··on Why is it so expensive to send an email?
It was very disorienting to be reading about “Elm development” in the context of e-mail, but having it refer to the language and not the e-mail client from the 1980s.
dcrazy··on Group in San Francisco graftng fruit-bearing branches onto street trees
Great way to make a mess and attract rodents. Jerks.
dcrazy··on What Is Gridifcation
I had never heard the Steve Gadd version of Peg. It sounds so different, more “upright”: https://youtu.be/WcrQ20UCxiM
dcrazy··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Japan didn’t invade America and forcibly conscript its women as concubines for soldiers.
dcrazy··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
No, that’s the right path. Your report should have an FB number.
dcrazy··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
How did you report it? If you used Feedback Assistant then it would have given you an FB number. That’s the only way to be sure anyone at Apple sees it.
dcrazy··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
For your own sake and the sake of anyone else who might be hitting this bug, I suggest you open applefeedback:// in Safari, file a bug, and post the FB number here or on the Apple Developer Forums.
dcrazy··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
iOS absolutely uses a CRL, and Apple has revoked the eMudhra certs as of this morning: https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/22/apple-blocks-certificat...
dcrazy··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
Yes, for those without children to schedule around, vacationing just before or after other people’s children’s school vacations is the primary trick.
dcrazy··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
What does your anecdote have to do with this rule change? People take drugs and jump off the balconies at hotels too.
dcrazy··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
Should that Marriott have used their time machine to retroactively keep the hair out of the bedsheets? They did what they could in the moment, because they realized that it was a fuckup.
dcrazy··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
We did the same with a vacation rental in Hawaii this year. The properties in the neighborhood are owned by individual investors as vacation rentals, but they ultimately contract with a handful of full-service vacation rental agencies. Seeking out the agencies’ websites was worth a 25% discount over renting the same property on AirBnB.
dcrazy··on How abliterated models can get you pwned
This is a long way to reach for a hypothetical just to reinterpret the head of this comment chain as not being about remote-hosted first-party models accessed through an API.
dcrazy··on U.S. Supreme Court to review 1868 federal ban on home distilling of liquor
The question before the court isn’t whether the law is good. It’s whether the government can ban individuals from an activity for the purpose of making it easier to successfully collect tax on the commercialization of that activity.

The government is only allowed to do what is “necessary and proper” to make enforcement effective. There are reasonable arguments on both sides as to whether prohibiting home distillation is as necessary as it was in the late 19th century.

dcrazy··on Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly Report GLP-1 Signals of Slowed Biological Aging at ARDD
I’ve seen headlines about a potential link to hair loss lately.
