dekayed··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
We already have these in the industry. They're Staff+ Engineers and Architects. It's generally the norm to not be cranking out code at this level, but they make sure everyone is moving in the right direction, assisting managers, and mentoring juniors.

I start with RAISE as well, but follow up with POUTY to get the Y if I blank on the first round.
dekayed··on Germany approves global minimum corporate tax
I believe the US does already have this (went into effect last year, maybe). It applies to corporations which have a revenue over $1B.
dekayed··on Effective Airflow Development
Airflow is still a very good option, though there are more competitors on the market. Two options are:

Could you go more into this? How did you go about the evaluation and what metrics were you using? How did you capture the 'developers just hated it' in a way that leadership understood?

I'm not disputing the outcome, just feel like it would be useful for others in a similar situation.

dekayed··on Ask HN: What was the best CS paper you read in 2017?
I'd recommend taking a look at Papers We Love

dekayed··on Data Infrastructure at IFTTT
I'm assuming that you run Kafka within AWS. Much of the hardware requirements/suggestions I've seen for Kafka are all for non-virtualized environments. If you can get into it, could you share some details...

- What is the size of your Kafka cluster

- What instances types do you use?

- Do you use EBS or use ephemeral storage?

- How much do you over-provision to deal with instance loss?

- Any other gotchas/considerations?

Thanks!

dekayed··on Romney campaign got its IT from Best Buy, Staples, and friends
The approaches between the two campaigns relay the IT as a cost center vs a profit center debate. The Obama campaign used its technology to create a competitive edge while the Romney campaign minimized its internal operations and relied on outside parties which were not completely aligned with the goal of the campaign.

Also, I have a question which I would love to gain any insight on. In this article and others I've read about this , its been said that the Romney campaign could only start developing Orca after the primaries were finished. Why is this? Shouldn't the RNC have been in charge of developing something like this? Or are these applications very specific to the actual candidate?

> This history is in really marked contrast to MATLAB and its corresponding free version Octave, where computer scientists pretty much refuse to use Octave, despite MATLAB's massive price tag to pretty much everyone involved (even with 90% discounts).

Do you have any insights as to why Octave does not have higher adoption?

dekayed··on RubyMine 4 is Here to Make You Feel the Productivity
I tend to go back and forth between vim and RubyMine. I like editing in vim, but when I want/need to use a debugger, I use RubyMine. RubyMine has a vim keymap (I believe they also have emacs), so editing within it is not so bad either.

I think I've adopted this since I went from an IDE -> vim instead of the opposite. Having a visual debugger was one of the features that kept me in an IDE (at least for Ruby). I just never felt like I was as productive without it.

dekayed··on Earth actually has two moons.
The article states that these 'moons' typically stay for around 10 months. Do they escape from the Earth's gravity or are they pulled closer to the Earth and eventually break up in the atmosphere?
dekayed··on How do you track and decide what topics you want to spend time learning?
On the Eclipse side, I've been using viPlugin[1]. It is not free, but I've felt like it has been worth the cost since my forays into vim had all failed before getting this plugin. If you're working heavily with Eclipse/VS, it is definitely jarring to switch back and forth between one of those and vim, but using a plugin like this eases that pain.

I'd recommend that if you need a nap midday, then nap midday.

I generally wake up around the same time in the morning, regardless of what time I went to bed. This can sometimes lead to me feeling very sleepy midday, which kills my productivity. Coffee can sometimes help, but sometimes it just makes my head even more cloudy. If I'm in a position to do so (if I'm in a location where I can lie down and I don't have a meeting soon), I generally take a short nap (~45 minutes). This brings my productivity back to normal in most cases.

dekayed··on SAP To Acquire SuccessFactors For $3.4 Billion
We use it for year-end reviews. It is pretty telling that every year before the reviews start, our HR department apologizes for still using SuccessFactors.

We have also tried to do more year-round tracking on the progress of business objectives, but that hasn't caught on either.

dekayed··on Alzheimer's: The News Is Not Getting Better
Agreed. I have tried to express this to others after my father started to really change. Most people were shocked and assured me that I wouldn't think that way if I actually had the disease. My only response to that was to say that I hope this is cured by that point.

dekayed··on Poll: How much do you make as a programmer?
From the breakdown provided by the calculator, it looks like the big differentiator is housing costs (369 vs 250). My guess would be that they are using housing data for places like Queens/Brooklyn, where housing can be considerably cheaper than Manhattan, but are not considering places like South San Francisco, Colma, etc. when calculating the housing prices for San Francisco.

dekayed··on 20 Million Google+ Users May Exist by the Weekend
I feel like G+'s success is related to Facebook's past success. Ever since G+ came out, I've seen many posts on my FB feed for people giving out and wanting G+ invites. The me-too mentality inherent in FB (and other social networking sites) means that people will want to join whatever site their friends are on. That being said, it will be interesting to see if G+ can keep these people around or if it is going to just be a passing fad.
dekayed··on All these Brilliant People at Facebook Make Me Sad
I was reminded of the following article when I read this blog posting:

http://greaterseas.com/2011/05/the-future-of-innovation/

There's a great quote by Jeff Hammerbacher (an ex-Facebooker) that is great:

“The best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads. That sucks.”

dekayed··on Gcc compile error with 2GB of data
Generally not. My last project involved building a framework in which scientists could run calculations for certain types of risk. A prototype built by some of said scientists involved code like seen in the SO question. After looking at the types of calculations being done, we figured out that most of the equations that were used were similar and could be generalized. We also moved all the coefficients and parameters for all the equations into configuration files. I suspect that a thorough evaluation of this code would reveal something similar as in my case.
dekayed··on My life in Accenture before startups
Perhaps this is also internal vs. external insight. It seems like from swombat's and other commenters who have worked there, the consensus is that there are many talented people who work at Accenture (and other big consultancy firms). However as an outsider, when looking at some of the work by these types of firms, you generally don't gain a sense of confidence in the people working there.
dekayed··on Show HN: Fitocracy, an RPG for fitness
As someone else mentioned, some of the quests require equipment that I don't have. How about asking the user what type of equipment they have? I wouldn't go too detailed into it, but say something like 'gym membership', 'small home gym', 'treadmill', etc. Once you have that information, you could scope the quests based on that.

Another thing that would be useful would be some videos or instructions on some of the exercises. Showing correct form and/or how to use certain equipment would be great.

dekayed··on Want to attract top tech talent? Offer telecommuting
I think it is also important for in-office workers be allowed to telecommute when needed. Having that flexibility offers a lot of freedom as there are times where you need to be out of the office but can still work. I currently have a family situation where I try and be at my parents' home a week a month and having the option to work from there has been a huge help. It is definitely a big factor in why I would stick around in my current job for a while at least.
