dennisnedry··on Quake Shareware, a CD-ROM just a little too full
I fed the image into Gemini and it could not detect that it’s legit or AI, but in addition to the wrong store name, the other banner that’s supposed to day SOFTWARE says TWARE or something like that. It sure seems like AI to me.
dennisnedry··on Quake Shareware, a CD-ROM just a little too full
It’s not Mandela effect, it’s AI.
dennisnedry··on The ice machine that chills Chicago’s skyscrapers
For anybody wondering, the AC in these buildings can become very cold, so it’s quite an efficient system. I kind of liken it to NYC’s shared steam .
dennisnedry··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
Vine was killed by Twitter. A foolish move given how popular TikTok is now.
dennisnedry··on That time when I accidentally social engineered myself to a film set
Actually, just ask to be an extra. You will get paid, fed, and get to hang out all day on set.
dennisnedry··on That time when I accidentally social engineered myself to a film set
I believe the parent is being sarcastic.
dennisnedry··on Peter Thiel to step down from Meta’s board
99% of internet posts make claims without sources.
dennisnedry··on Blender 3.0
Ye makes a cameo, bruh.
dennisnedry··on FBI says seized fortune was criminals’ loot—owners say: Where’s the proof?
Can we add "Defund the FBI" to the national narrative?
dennisnedry··on Wide-ranging SolarWinds probe sparks fear in Corporate America
Because the SEC regulates publicly traded companies.
dennisnedry··on Wide-ranging SolarWinds probe sparks fear in Corporate America
Of course not, this is just the parent poster's opinion. The truth of the matter is that there exceptional individuals who decide to get into software development and software security. The problem with software is that often companies don't invest into securing their software, and that has to be a priority. Perhaps having the SEC force fines for not securing mission critical software is the first step?
dennisnedry··on A brief history of people losing their minds in Antarctica
Magic mushrooms are now being used to treat anxiety. Just something to consider when dealing with a situation that creates massive amounts of anxiety (being stuck in ice with no way out).
dennisnedry··on No One Is Prepared for Hagfish Slime (2019)
The US Navy has figured out a way to create the slime in a lab - https://newatlas.com/hagfish-slime-us-navy/47544/

They’re hoping to use it for shark repellent and ballistic defense.

dennisnedry··on Microsoft Surface Duo – Dual-screen Android phone
Microsoft abandoned their Windows Mobile OS years ago.
dennisnedry··on Microsoft Surface Duo – Dual-screen Android phone
Just curious, is a user supposed to put the device up to their ear to make a phone call? Or is the expectation to use a bluetooth headset?
dennisnedry··on E3 2020 Cancelled
Good idea, but that would mean the game journalists wouldn't have anything to do.
dennisnedry··on Show HN: I created Postwoman, an online, open-source API request builder
They mean to assign an expiration date to your tokens. Then when you're done testing, still revoke the token, even if you haven't reached the expiration date.
dennisnedry··on Acute Effects of Electronic Cigarette Aerosol Inhalation on Vascular Function
I don't understand why making them available via a prescription would solve anything. I do not smoke or vape, but I have a friend who stopped smoking because vaping was accessible without going to a doctor. He just tried it because he wanted to see if it would work, and it did. He no longer vapes or smokes.
dennisnedry··on MRI disabled every iOS device in facility

dennisnedry··on Navy Medics Get Prepared for Combat with Tour of Duty in Chicago
He's a troll. Read through his comment history, it's nothing but "love socialism; hate capitalism" rhetoric.
dennisnedry··on America's Complacent Class
I agree, you constantly see posts and discussions on the elusive concept of "work-life balance". People don't stop and take the time to address their personal needs and just concentrate on the career.
dennisnedry··on Living in Switzerland ruined me for America and its lousy work culture (2016)
This is true for large corporations, but smaller startups that is not the case. Smaller companies have everybody wearing multiple hats. Nobody sits around, and if they do, it's time to ask them to leave.
dennisnedry··on Why I’m thankful for JavaScript fatigue
Security is it's own separate issue. There are best practices that must be observed in all frameworks (preventing xss, sanitizing user data). Of course sometimes there are bugs, but the OSS community resolves those rather quickly.
dennisnedry··on Why I’m thankful for JavaScript fatigue
Agree with the author 100%. We want tons of new JS tools and frameworks out there so we can learn and evolve newer and faster ways of developing. I still remember when jQuery first came out and how earth-shattering that was. This inspired so many more devs to create better and easier to use tools.
dennisnedry··on “Fake News” dataset on Kaggle
Agreed, the BS Detector seems more like the "Things I Don't Agree With" Detector.
dennisnedry··on This Pizzeria Is Not a Child-Trafficking Site
Who are you to determine who is fit to vote or not vote? The point of democracy is that EVERY citizen has a say in their government, despite how insane their belief system may be.
dennisnedry··on The GOP Arcade is producing tiny, raw, irreverent games based on the news
When did it become acceptable to post political propaganda on Hacker News?
dennisnedry··on Zuckerberg in Lagos Land
This reads like a PR article that Zuckerberg paid to have written.
dennisnedry··on GitHub Audio
It would be possible if there was a change log constantly updated that was meta data to the stream. In other words, each time something is done on the audio/visual file, log what it was, and version control that.
dennisnedry··on The man behind the million dollar homepage 11 years later
Agreed, kind of like gambling.
