derpyzza··on It's still ok to enjoy programming
> I'm doing my best to go back to just coding as much by hand in my professional life while just switching to pure vibe coding in my private life.

isn't this backwards?

derpyzza··on "I'm on a war footing": Terry Tao and the crisis in math
yeah, let's all be stupid together
derpyzza··on The Brain Sandwich
Meh, the rules for what an "X sandwich" refers to tends to differ by types of sandwiches. In terms of normal sandwiches, an "X sandwich" does indeed refer to X being in between two types of bread, like a chicken sandwich, or an ice cream sandwich, or a knuckle sandwich, etc. But on the other hand, sometimes an "X sandwich" refers to two things sandwiching some other thing, like a compliment sandwich — where you sandwich criticism between two bits of compliments, or a croissant sandwich — which refers to a sandwich that uses a sliced croissant as the bread. So calling it a "brain sandwich" works fine I think

> spaghetti code wow, that's a term i haven't heard in a minute. almost makes me nostalgic for all the human-made slop we had to deal with

> If the LLM went away tomorrow I'd still know how to do most things in Linux, set up my opnsense router, reinstall xcp-ng, do everything in docker, and a boatload of other things that would've been so much more tedious to learn before an LLM.

This makes sense, but i'm assuming you have some sort of technical background to begin with? I imagine people that have been around pre-LLMs would be better equipped for not only prompting the LLMs for accurate information, but also internalizing that information. I wonder if the post-LLM generation would be the same.

: Though I imagine that there's going to be a cutoff date for people born before a certain point pre-LLMs too. Old people rn seem to be much more blindly accepting of whatever the LLMs spit out than younger adults.

Interested in low level dev, embedded dev, graphics programming, game engine dev, and backend dev, but willing to try out almost anything :)

derpyzza··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
kinda. there'd still be a lot less demand for software devs than there used to be, a lot of people would still be jobless/would have to pivot to some other career.

derpyzza··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
an opus isn't a magnum opus fyi. magnum opus is a phrase with means one's greatest work, where opus in latin means "work". but in this context opus refers to an ordered series of musical compositions

i suspect in some time people might begin to flag every bit of text they see online as "LLM sounding", even if it's very clearly not
derpyzza··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
this is awesome, but also code samples being in PNG images does not make them safe from LLMs anymore unfortunately, LLMs are really good at reading text from images now

derpyzza··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
i just figured it was mainly stylistic tbh. something that may have been a relic of some past limitation that we kept around just because it was "how it's always done". didn't really realize it actually helps people with reading, it's never really bothered me

derpyzza··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
huh i didn't even notice, that's how i write all my blog posts too. it looks nicer to me and i don't have to bother checking for "proper" capitalization if everything's just lowercase anyway.

didn't realize people struggled to read text that way though, maybe i should change my writing style if this is a common pain point

derpyzza··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
...string's aren't a pointer to a pointer to a character. they're pointers to characters directly.

maybe you need to wrestle with that concept some more...

derpyzza··on Show HN: Capsule – Single-file web apps that save their data into SQLite
couldn't you just embed the js directly into the html file though? that would sidestep the CORS error. and since most of the people using a program like this are likely to be using AI to generate their ( likely throwaway ) applets anyway, readability and maintainability for the source doesn't matter as much as it would with human authors so having a separate js file doesn't bring that many advantages anyway.
