dev213··on Cambrian Explosion of AI
Ugh, I am so tired of people drawing a comparison between large language models and life. They’re so different they’re not even comparable.
dev213··on Poisson Disk Sampling
Love the interactive visuals in this post!
dev213··on Google Maps renames "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" faster than US Government
On my end it still says "Lake Ontario" on Kagi Maps (I am outside of the US though).

And if it's showing up as "Lake America" inside of the US on Kagi Maps, it's most likely because of Mapbox, and not Kagi.

dev213··on Leak Exposes Members of Peter Thiel's Secretive 'Dialog' Society
the way this got leaked is so embarrassingly stupid.

Their website was just a react SPA with the entire member list in the JS bundle. What a stupid mistake to make for these tech "geniuses".

dev213··on Show HN: Voice Age Verification
at first I was a bit shocked at the price of $0.10/verification (having never implemented KYC before). But after looking it up, more traditional KYC/age verification services cost up to a couple euros per scan which is crazy to me. Never thought about the cost of such systems before.
dev213··on Claude Code's source code has been leaked via a map file in their NPM registry
Undercover mode is pretty interesting and potentially problematic: https://github.com/sanbuphy/claude-code-source-code/blob/mai...
dev213··on Ask HN: Share your personal website

nfo-file inspired landing page!

dev213··on Ask HN: Are you also affected by AWS outage?
I feel like it's hard to avoid aws downstream, even if you don't host any components of any application there. For example in my team, we are currently facing issues with Slack & the Docker registry (causing prod deployments to fail...).

This is another reminder that centralization on the internet is a net negative.

dev213··on Sidekick: Local-first native macOS LLM app
looks like an awesome tool! I just found it funny that in code interpreter demo, javascript is used to evaluate mathematical problems (especially the float comparison)
dev213··on Show HN: LangCSS – An AI Assistant for Tailwind
Looks really nice, and works well too! I just have two little UX gripes:

- Allow submission of a message with some sort of keyboard shortcut (enter and shift + enter only add a new line)

- Disable the "Send" button while the completion is loading, this prevents accidentally clicking send twice, causing the process to fail.

edit: formatting and typo

dev213··on Zen, a Arc-like open-source browser based on the Firefox engine
(now ex-) Firefox user here. I think I am in love with this browser.

I tried switching to arc, but it didn't stick since I really got used to the Firefox way of life. The arc browser also felt really commercial and has a lot of gimmicky AI features, which is not optimal.

This Zen browser is like a blend of the best of both worlds!

dev213··on Toasts are bad UX
Pretty much every well-known UI library, including Bootstrap, Angular Material/MUI & Chakra UI, calls these Toasts.
dev213··on HuggingFace Is Down
Looks like they're back!
dev213··on Manjaro 24 is Arch Linux for the rest of us
In my opinion EndeavourOS is the best "Arch for the rest of us" type of distro. Manjaro has proven countless times that their main team is incompetent at best.
dev213··on ScrapeGraphAI: Web scraping using LLM and direct graph logic
The "Integrates Easily" links to Langchain and Pipedream are flipped on your website.
dev213··on The Ladybird browser project
Sure, if that's the reason, I completely understand. However that's not the reason they stated in their FAQ. It really comes off as gatekeeping
dev213··on The Ladybird browser project
This is a really cool project, but:

"Where are the ISO images?

There are no ISO images. This project does not cater to non-technical users."

This comes off as really abrasive. Wanting an ISO image to quickly test this out is not an indicator of someones technical ability.

I'm sorry I don't want to boot up a linux vm, install a lot of development packages and then build my own boot image just to try this out.

dev213··on Show HN: Buyidentities.com
So, what's the benefit of using this over something like faker?

Isn't the point of most of these identity generation tools to generate huge amounts of test data? This would just make that free process cost something.

dev213··on Pkgx – “Run anything” from the creator of brew
"written in typescript" does not mean it's slow. V8 and JavaScriptCore are insanely fast, and typescript is a proven language.
dev213··on Show HN: I make this inbox work like pastebin. It helps you DM without yr info
> an LEMP stack

oh cool, I was confused because it feels like an SPA, but I couldn't identify the framework.

Nice work, interested in seeing the progress of this project!

dev213··on Show HN: I make this inbox work like pastebin. It helps you DM without yr info
What tech stack does this app use? Is it open source?

dev213··on Google is picking ChatGPT responses from Quora as correct answer
I get:

"Yes, an egg can be melted by applying heat.[1][2] The most common method is cooking the egg on the stove or in the microwave until it reaches its melting point and becomes a liquid.[1] However, care must be taken to heat the egg gently and avoid allowing it to overcook, which could produce undesirable textures or safety issues.[3]"

dev213··on Introducing Proton CAPTCHA, the world’s first censorship-resistant CAPTCHA
I don't understand your point about it being unusable as a free user.

I only upgraded to a paid tier about a year ago, before that I was using for about one and a half years for free with 0 issues.

Notifications never arrive late (at least on the IOS app)

Maybe it's because I'm not a heavy E-mail "Power user", but I see most of these as non-issues (this depends on your use case, of course)

Another huge pro for me, as a resident of Germany, the data stays in Germany and is protected under our strong data security laws.

I do have to agree, the search was kind of sucky for a while. But imo it's improved a lot is also pretty useable now.

tutanota is great. I've been a happy, paying customer for about a year now.
