devcpp··on 2013 Automobile of the Year: Tesla Model S
Not really the same. You can take a dozen jerrycan of gas that will last you for a long time, and that does for the same price as the gas you'll buy at the station, which is precisely what people did before you could find gas stations every few miles.

Not so for electricity: charging and taking 10 batteries with you on a trip is much more of a hassle and quite expensive. Fuel is really the deal-breaker for the buyers who won't go with an electric car until "fuel" is available everywhere. The other points are moot until this issue is solved.

Exactly what he was pointing out.
devcpp··on SAT: Getting the lowest score possible
I visited some of the article from his homepage. This guy is an all-around genius! He writes every page on his website in this manner, on so many different fields. Bookmarked.

I hope no one will only look at his SAT.

devcpp··on Windows 8 (soon) available for download
For a man who thinks $40 is too expensive for a good OS, you'll love Linux.
devcpp··on Twilio Is Crushing It: 150K Devs, 1.5M Phone Calls/Day, 500M Total Phone Calls
Not with the ban system. Here in France, you can report companies that make automated phone calls and they get strongly punished. I haven't received one in years.

Of course, sometimes I get calls from actual humans for polls or advertising a product, but it's much less of a bother since it happens less often and you can reject them.

devcpp··on iOS 6 App Store is a disaster for developers
I think we are all just surprised there are so many design decisions we can't agree with, precisely with the first major update for iOS comes since Jobs died. Up until the iPhone 4, I don't think I've had any criticism towards the design of Apple products... since Jobs came back to Apple.

I don't think these are coincidences. Jobs may have been more than a good businessman. He was a source of inspiration.

devcpp··on Apple accused of ripping off famous Swiss clock design
That sounds quite arbitrary, and if anything, it's the first time I've heard about this "principle".
devcpp··on New Apple maps app under fire from users
Tablets are another thing. Google hasn't been thinking about it too much (N7 is their first attempt) and the iPad is still king.

There's a lot of work to do in that field, and that's catching-up work more than improvements. It's much like discussing the Nexus One. Let's talk about it again in a year or two.

devcpp··on The Amazing iOS 6 Maps
You know, I'm starting to miss Steve Jobs. He was a businessman as well, but he also knew how to treat his customers right, because keeping the customers in the hype is extremely important in his high-benefits scheme. I don't think he would have let that kind of stuff happen. He would have paid the price: it's not like Apple can't afford Google Maps for another version of two of the iPhone, and now some customers are considering switching. If they get out of the walled garden that turns into a prison, they might not come back.
devcpp··on Xkcd's world - pieced together with AngularJS (warning: big images)
Best one yet in my opinion. Thanks.
devcpp··on The iPhone 5
You must have confused innovation with improvement. This time on, they picked safe improvements from the competitors and integrated them. Very nice improvements which make a very nice phone, but nothing I would call innovation.

I hope at least the competitors will come up with truly novel ideas. Hardware improvements are more than expected from every manufacturer as time goes. But no one can predict innovation.

devcpp··on The iPhone “Icon Ceiling” has been broken: is this the beginning of the end?
Absolutely. Apple has primarily been a marketing company for the last decade. They should keep that in mind, for their own sake.
devcpp··on Ubuntu Reaches 220,000 PCs in Schools in Spain
My entire beginning programming class had to install Ubuntu and no one even complained about it, with all the various computers in the homes of 60 novice students. Some installed it on their laptops, no connectivity problem. We did a lot of stuff on it, including surfing, coding and watching movies. No software issues whatsoever.

Look, sometimes people have a lot of issues with Windows too. No OS is perfect. But those are not very common instances. I think you are just not lucky.

devcpp··on Google Search is only 18% Search
I looked for "81" in the page and found nothing. Apparently, he never said that 81.5% of the area is made up of ads. He may have edited it but I think his criticism was towards the unused space for results, not especially towards the ads.

And if that is the case, I must concur. I fail to understand why Google added a large side bar instead of adding more top bars in the unused space next to the logo (perhaps right under the search text box). The designers at Google may disagree but the Jitbit guy sure has a point.

devcpp··on Apple v. Samsung Verdict: Could Bill Gates Have Patented The iPhone in 1995?
The player is playing the kind of game where everybody loses. But there is a way to make everyone win: act like Google has been acting up to now. Every big actor should build up a protective pile of abusive patents (it's so easy nowadays) and threaten anyone that might sue them of counter-suing.

It's just like the Cold war: nuclear weapons were a reality, so everyone got lots of it and mutual assured destruction ensured nothing too bad could happen.

Now Apple decided to play an all-in against its main competitor to establish monopoly by using its abusive patent against someone they knew could counter-sue. And now, instead of discouraging that kind of practice and realizing the perversion of the patent system, the jury decided to encourage them.

In other words: this player chose to play a disgusting game. I think we can hate both the player and the game.

devcpp··on Why you should not be displaying relative dates.
Send a usual absolute time stamp and let the client compute the relative time, hoping it is accurate.
devcpp··on Patent troll Intellectual Ventures seeks “VP of Global Good”
Oh they are. They really are. If you haven't already, you should listen to "When patents attack" from This American Life ( http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/441/w... ). The guys over at IV are really doing their best to sound like they are genuinely protecting their the poor inventors from the bad guys.
devcpp··on Samsung’s Report Says Galaxy Would Be Better If it Were More Like the iPhone
What were you expecting? This document shows room for improvement. It's not a full-on comparison of every aspect.

Engineers don't care about congratulating themselves on the areas where their product is better than the competition. They want to know where the competition is doing better than them. This is the purpose of this document.

devcpp··on The weakest link by far is Apple
Did anyone ever show you his credit card "okay but just once"? I doubt so. The big number is indeed supposed to remain as secret as possible to avoid trouble.
devcpp··on HN statistics

devcpp··on 4chan: Beyond one billion
4Chan is known for this: it has the best and the worst of the Internet.

After some time lurking, your brain acquires the skill of filtering threads that it thinks are worthless, without even polling your consciousness. As you develop this ability, you learn to appreciate the best in 4Chan, and it's really good.

I don't know anyone else from there but as far as I'm concerned, I am a normal person in everyday life and I never mention it. I just want to have a good time when I am bored, like many users there.

So it's important to try to filter the content. This site is rather unique for letting users do almost whatever they want without consequences. Some people abuse it but they won't waste it for me: the dogs bark and the caravan goes on.
