devsatish··on State of S3 – Your Laptop is no Laptop anymore – a personal Rant
S3 is one of the sleep states (various levels of sleep S1 to S4) . S5 is full shutdown . https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/k...
devsatish··on They don't make 'em like that any more: Borland Turbo Pascal 7
back in the day , started my first job as intern (VC++ dev) and I was so excited to get a stack of MSDN CDs for reference.
devsatish··on Windows 10 wallpaper was physically built and photographed (2015)
That’s a cool read! Followed the VF article and eventually landed on this Reddit post where they shared the full res. https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsxp/comments/s2i9ta/finally_w...
devsatish··on A useful front-end confetti animation library
This is elegant. Shows the passion that goes into building some thing that looks so beautiful and easy to integrate.
devsatish··on Heat Pumps Take on Cold Climates
I just got one installed last month in middle of winter at my home in New England.

The air from heat pump feels more comfortable than the dry air from the furnace. I got installed with a the furnace back-up option, that way if the heat-pump can't generate the heat, it switches to propane (it becomes very cold here in New England in Winters). From my experience, the heat pump is working well in 30F and above weather (-1.C)

Heat pumps burn a lot of electricity, luckily I have solar to off-set that cost, although Solar generation is low in Winter, it adds up well over the year.

Heat Pumps + Solar is the way to go.

devsatish··on Nuvem, a subsea cable to connect Portugal, Bermuda, and the U.S.
95% of the world.
devsatish··on Almost all research on the mind is in English
on some what related: Immigrant parents (first gen) mostly 'think'/their internal monologue in their own mother tongue/language. The kids mostly born in the US like the rest of the "English" native speakers have their internal thinking/monologue (brain speak if you will) is in English.

This adds to an interesting conversation, sharing nuances, inside jokes etc.

devsatish··on Microsoft opens MIDI 2.0 repo
MIDI is awesome. On some what related note. Nostalgia! MIDIs from Windows 95 https://youtu.be/tCeJ3CKbxMM?t=672
devsatish··on Apple: The only big tech giant going against the job cuts tide
This is the right take ! The pandemic hiring overall was all mostly ‘E-commerce’ driven.
devsatish··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Merry Christmas!
devsatish··on Tell HN: Employers are not desperate to hire developers
Which tech skills? Full stack? Backend? any speciality skills?
devsatish··on Tell HN: Employers are not desperate to hire developers
1) Tail end of the year - its hard to get full time roles , The hiring definitely picks up after Jan 2nd week or so. 2) Try consulting/contracting - That space is still brimming w hiring. Much faster on-boarding /hiring.
devsatish··on Magic Leap 2
I think the point is -- its a headset that's so easy to use or just slide up on your head if you don't need .
devsatish··on Show HN: Paste React components into any website
I do see the value in this. Especially for folks trying to add some cool react widgets without doing the full dev - specially for some old code-base. Respect!
devsatish··on Nightdrive
Really cool . Reminds me of the VR collaboration project (Dance Tonite) by Google Data arts team and LCD Sound System https://tonite.dance/
devsatish··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
Every morning after shower and just before the work starts or I go to work. I sit before the small temple (bookcase) in my home. Light a lamp and an incense; and a short prayer - sit in a mindfulness state - asking for blessings for all.
devsatish··on SerenityOS demo at Handmade Seattle 2021 [video]
I have been following Andreas/SerenityOS for a quite a while now. It's extremely impressive - how he and the community support built an entirely new OS. https://github.com/SerenityOS/serenity/graphs/contributors
devsatish··on Benefits of Not Using an IDE
IDEs are tech equivalent of power tools. You need them. Of course you can always chisel down when needed, but tooling helps.
devsatish··on Show HN: Visualizing a Codebase
This is cool . I remember using “Understand for C++” that does something like this , a full source code graph visualization- function flow etc. This of course starts as a folder visualization , but I see the value- seeing the big picture
devsatish··on Docusaurus 2 Beta

devsatish··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
To their credit it was pretty fast for me to cancel. All i said was “ I have a subscription from work and don’t need personal subscription anymore “ . They cancelled right away , no more questions asked .
devsatish··on How to Escape a Sinking Ship
Sigh. Thought it's an article about getting off from a start-up/business that's sinking; not literally the Titanic itself. Amusing but well written, triggered some flashes of Titanic movie while reading it though.
devsatish··on Wyze $20 Smart Watch
Wyze will be a great acquisition, Guessing it would be Amazon that will acquire them eventually.
devsatish··on Wyze $20 Smart Watch
Been a Wyze customer for couple of years now. Bought many of their cameras from their store and Home Depot. The cameras are real good and much much cheaper than other big brands (Ring/Nest etc). It seems they are basically building a Xiaomi kinda of brand in the US (Xiaomi is extremely popular in countries like India where they have huge market base with well styled products similar to Apple line).
devsatish··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
No.
devsatish··on Userinterface.js – A small library to build front-end JavaScript applications
reminds me of Jack Slocum's original Ext.JS with Yahoo UI components .. circa 2006/2007.. Appreciate the awesome effort! even though the industry overall moved to templating model (JSX) which makes it easy.
devsatish··on Show HN: Axiom – No-code Browser Automation

devsatish··on Ask HN: Resources to learn basic UI layout design for React apps?
As some one in similar boat. The best resource has been rolling up sleeves and digging into Flexbox (https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/a-guide-to-flexbox/). Start with Admin Page templates for some visual cues (tons of them on themeforest/github - both for Web/Mobile)
