diggernet··on Private Jet plane crashes in Florida
Unfortunately, even at a descent rate of 30,000 feet per minute you've got a full minute to anticipate the impact before you don't feel it.
diggernet··on The future in old computer magazines (1984–2004)
Back in the day, the industry was run by computer enthusiasts who saw computers as an amazing tool to improve lives and enable and empower people. Today the industry is run by money enthusiasts who see computers as an amazing tool to extract money and manipulate and control people.
diggernet··on Your Phone Is About to Stop Being Yours: 70 Days Until Lockdown
Never byod. Besides MDM issues, it makes your personal device in scope for discovery if any lawsuit against the company.
diggernet··on Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land
Fences can be made out of the tree that fell. Even post holes are optional. Only thing you need to pay for is some cheap wire mesh, and that may be reusable for repairs.
diggernet··on MIT class project turns into an FDA-cleared treatment for tremors
2.009 appears to be some kind of class id. The actual class discussed was in 2017.
diggernet··on Best-selling Zigbee temperature sensors tested and compared
That's my main problem with Thread. With Zigbee I have confidence that the mesh is 100% local and offline. How do I get that confidence with Thread? How can I really be sure that something isn't helpfully opening it up to the world?
diggernet··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
They are an invasive species in most of the world. Wiping them out is restoring the ecosystem.
diggernet··on OpenRadioss is not open anymore
Looks like they've made https://github.com/OpenRadioss/OpenRadioss private to make that harder to do. But hopefully someone out there has a recent clone of the repo.
diggernet··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
Oh good. Then Google will be "clean", while countless homes will be getting their power from coal or whatever instead of this nuclear plant.

diggernet··on CoMaps integration with the wider FLOSS ecosystem
Nice to learn about Traffxml, but that allows taking in traffic data from where? Seems like there would need to be some service consolidating traffic reports from users of various map apps.
diggernet··on CoMaps integration with the wider FLOSS ecosystem
Not really. I imagine a sqlite db, but I haven't thought about any particular schema.
diggernet··on CoMaps integration with the wider FLOSS ecosystem
Yeah, there are all kinds of interesting things that can be done with shared data like this. But the first step is to have some standard ContentProvider to let apps share the data locally on a single device, similar to how other user data is handled. Because I'm tired of having several map apps installed for various reasons that all have separate favorites.

Once that is in place, people can create apps that build on it in lots of different ways.

diggernet··on CoMaps integration with the wider FLOSS ecosystem
Thanks for the reminder that ContentProvider is the Android term I couldn't remember when I wrote my other comment here.

And the reminder that I should have added this to my list:

3. A ContentProvider app for OSM map data, so that apps can share the same offline map data.

diggernet··on CoMaps integration with the wider FLOSS ecosystem
No, it should be local-first. Private and offline by default. There could certainly be sync integrations using AT, Dropbox, iCloud, etc. Those could even be separate apps, using the same API to access the data. But that sort of thing should be secondary and optional.
diggernet··on CoMaps integration with the wider FLOSS ecosystem
Two things I would love to see in the FLOSS mapping ecosystem:

1. A POI/favorites app that maintains a local database with an API for other apps to access it. Apps could then store markers there instead of in their own private db, so that points added on one map app can be instantly available in other apps.

2. A shared traffic data service. Any OSM map app could contribute to the same data, helping reduce Google's advantage in live traffic data.

Obviously, both of these would need privacy protections and be subject to user choice. And there should also be some requirement that both reading and writing be supported, to ensure apps reading POI data don't lock in new data, and to prevent apps reading traffic data from freeloading.

diggernet··on Nearly 3M Teslas recalled in China over hidden door handles
You know what's a bigger source of drag than mirrors? Open wheel wells.

If the Tesla door handles were really because they care that much about aerodynamics, their cars would look more like the 1st Gen Honda Insight.

diggernet··on Nearly 3M Teslas recalled in China over hidden door handles
"You can open a rear door manually (if equipped) in the unlikely situation in which Model Y has no power:

Note: Not all Model Y vehicles are equipped with a manual release for the rear doors.

1. Remove the mat from the bottom of the rear door pocket.

2. Press the red tab to remove the access door.

3. Pull the mechanical release cable forward."

diggernet··on Reading Maps – Journeys from fiction drawn on the real world
I love this. There are books I've read that I never really had a good mental image of where the locations were.

Just a note that despite the title these are not all fiction. Which is great! I can think of a couple books i'd love to add.

diggernet··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
"...adopt a replacement tire efficiency program “designed to ensure that replacement tires sold in the state are at least as energy efficient, on average, as tires sold in the state as original equipment on new passenger cars and light-duty trucks.” Replacement tires are those purchased by drivers to replace existing tires."

Tires are not car-specific. This sounds like you couldn't just go out and buy some random tires, you could only buy tires that are designated for your specific vehicle. And that owners of two vehicles with the same size tires would have different allowed tire choices, depending on what their OEM tires were.

Put another way, is this saying you can't buy wider than OEM tires, and that you can't buy all-terrain tires for something that came with street tires?

diggernet··on Stop Turning every purchase into a tip request
At least in that case the card reader probably came configured that way, and why bother turning it off and refuse free money?

The most egregious I've seen was in the check out flow of a web store. Someone actually went to the effort to implement a tip nag at the end of check out, to ask for more money for a no-humans-present transaction.

diggernet··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
Yes you can. Many phones have a dedicated "assistant" button now that you can assign to your AI assistant app.
diggernet··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
Why do I need to agree to arbitration and waive class action lawsuits to read an article?
diggernet··on Ask HN: Anyone else tired of brands discontinuing your favorite everyday items?
Unfortunately Levi's has started making subtle changes to the same models. I have a drawer full of Levi's, all the same model. The older pairs are 100% cotton. The newer pairs are 99% cotton, 1% elastane, and have noticeably thinner fabric. Usage that would just scuff the older pairs will put a hole in the newer pairs. Very disappointing.
diggernet··on The Beam Engine
Love this article!

One nit: All three animations that show the governor and the flywheel have the governor turning the wrong way, causing the gears that join them to do physically impossible things.

diggernet··on Framework Laptop 16
My fantasy for the Laptop 16 keyboard: Optional taller hinges and thicker bezel.

Think about it... Replacement hinges that separate the upper and lower shell by an extra 1/8-1/4" plus a thicker bezel to fill that gap. Suddenly (at the cost of a thicker laptop, for those of us who don't mind) you have extra space under the screen for longer key throw, contoured key caps, trackpoint, arrow keys that overlap the lower deck to allow a proper inverted-T layout, etc. Maybe even possible to retrofit old ThinkPad keyboards in there.

Hey, I can dream, can't I?
