dmitrygr··on The Grid, a factory-scale robot in Massachusetts that builds PCBs on demand
I've ordered hundreds of things from JLC over the last decade. Both bare boards and assembled boards based on my own designs that I uploaded, BOMs i provided, and sometimes even special parts I had shipped to them. All ordered boards arrived to me just fine over their cheap shipping (name varied often, last i recall was "direct standard line") and over DHL, and precisely zero times was I asked for my SSN.

multi core scores? So you'll happily accept a 100,000-core pentium one class CPU to replace your laptop? it will have higher multicore score. No? Really? Oh? why not?

the champagne color for airs looks really nice when worn too, but i mirror your sentiments on black - it does not age well

I always look for a way to disable it

in my original post, i said "perf", i am not sure what you imagined, but i am not moving anything, geekbench single core score is a perfectly reasonable thing to measure under the name "perf"
dmitrygr··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
I did. I am seeing single core geekbench scores of 2700 compared to my MacBook Air at 3500. This, for a laptop that is thicker and heavier than my air.

If you look at the platform name and the kernel code you'l realize that this is not even remotely true. The base M chips are T8xxx which are (more or less) just iPad chips. The pro/max/ultra are T6xxx and are their own new thing, starting with M1 pro which was T6000

Neither of those have comparable perf
dmitrygr··on New iPad mini
Back in the mid 2000s, Palm sold Treo smartphones with the camera removed, for high-security places that forbade cameras. Why do I tell this story? It means there is (was) a market for it. I would LOVE and iPad mini with the camera (and its bump) removed. A nice thin slab.

No you do not. Go buy a Fairphone
dmitrygr··on Tesla profits drop 43% in Q3
> Elon Musk scam makes Theranos, ENRON looks like a kinder garden children.

What is the scam? I do not like EVs and do not own a Tesla car, but Tesla does make them, they do work, and people do like them. Theranos, by comparison, never delivered (nor could deliver) what they promised. So I am not sure I get your comparison.

Nobody said they have to provide you an SDK for free. This was not always the case in the past, and such times can come again.

Impatiently waiting for mobileconfig settings to disable all alt appstores. same reason.
dmitrygr··on Microsoft says Windows 11 is now 'more responsive' and runs better on 8GB of RAM
SMP, sleep-wake now works ~90% of the time compared to then's 10%, network drivers are more likely to support a random network card. Linux has improved a lot (a simpler task, as is started out being quite ... amateurish)
dmitrygr··on Ask HN: How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand?
> never used to personally check all my colleagues work, either,

Jesus F Christ! No wonder most software lately (~decade) has been shit. Have y'all not heard of code review? Or did you think it just for show...you sit on a change for a week and then press "Accept" without reading it?

I do not get this kind of complaint. Every thing you consider an important part of your life today (including cars and smartphones) started out as toys for rich kids. Complaining about it is asking to go back to the stone age, because all the advancements since were brought to you by someone's desire to make money and someone else being rich enough to afford it, till economies of scale made the poor old you able to afford it too.

Support has costs. Fine. I consider purchases under $500 to not include support, and treat them all as "sold as is"

However, if I need support and cannot reach a real living breathing human in under 30 min regarding any purchase over $500, I hang up, call AmEx and file a chargeback, citing inability to gain support. So far they have backed me every time. If enough people do it, chargeback costs send the message.

dmitrygr··on Microsoft says Windows 11 is now 'more responsive' and runs better on 8GB of RAM
You might be thinking of win9x. Win2k had no flaws and was perfect in all ways. I will not be taking questions.
dmitrygr··on Microsoft says Windows 11 is now 'more responsive' and runs better on 8GB of RAM
What worthy features have they added since win2k that justify the 7.75 GB more RAM being needed?
dmitrygr··on Ricky Mondello responds to "Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them."
Basically it boils down to “trust us, we won’t do what this guy is warning you we might do”

Forgive me, but that’s not convincing. The post even admits that it is entirely possible to do it. It just says that it will “antithetical“. Many antithetical things have been done in the past. It won’t be the first.

> Germany and France could impose their will on smaller neighbors

and do...

For example Hungary is being fined daily for attempting self-determination https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clww729180po

It is hilarious that you think they WANT to be fined.

dmitrygr··on Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court
Those with power setting the rules is the way the world worked long before America. It never changed nor could it, as anyone with power would eventually tire of being told how to live
dmitrygr··on Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court
Nothing to do with America. This is how the world works.

Our founders smartly chose against direct democracy. The more I look around, the more right I see they were.
