doommius··on Kidnapped by Deutsche Bahn
I most most places to English. Honestly it should be default to have the local language and English.
doommius··on Kidnapped by Deutsche Bahn
To some extend I'd like rail operators being forced to follow the same rules as airlines in terms of compensation for delays. As the only thing that seems to work in cases like this is financial motivation.
doommius··on What's the best project management tool you have ever used?
I do miss metas internal version of phorge/phabricator.

The task manament system was great and that it was integrated with everything. I could also just be that it was that everyone was forced to used the same system so there wasn't the bs of each department having their own system.

doommius··on Denmark will plant 1B trees and convert 10% of farmland into forest
Yup, and to add to this, the large majority of this meat is produced for export, and it's sold super cheap, I personally believe a good way of solving this is only giving EU support to non export farming, eg if you receive EU subsidy the good shouldn't be allowed to be exported, or those taxes would have to be repaid.

As currently we're destroying the nature, and waters due to this extremely intensive farming and as others have mentioned Denmark is producing 200-300 % of our domestic need + it requires significant import from south America where it wouldn't surprise me if this import lead to significant deforestation.

I know China is also working on increasing their domestic production[1] which is one of the primary markets that Denmark is exporting a lot to , It was 85000 tons last year[2]

tbh on the backend they're called guilds:

doommius··on Ask HN: Best practices for starting and structuring an Open Source project?
Microsoft has this which contains some nice pointers https://microsoft.github.io/code-with-engineering-playbook/
doommius··on ArchiveTeam has saved over 11.2B Reddit links
I setup the agent a few days ago just for fun, however it seems to have stalled/not getting new jobs.
doommius··on The AMD Ryzen 9 7900, Ryzen 7 7700, and Ryzen 5 5 7600 Review: Zen 4 at 65 Watts
my 10900k uses like 200-250 watt when it´s pushed. The newer 13900k has PL1/PL2 power limits of 125W and 253W, even then it has peaks of 350 watt from what I can read.
doommius··on Has the Time for 32GB of RAM Finally Come?
It's dropping but way slower than it used to.

The memory requirements for pc are from my understanding due to PC often multi tasking next to the game, chrome, discord, mail client, music, twitch, the list goes on.

doommius··on Books are physically changing because of inflation
Printed books - > 300-400 € per semester. Ebooks from questionable sites - > free. + more and more material is from papers instead of books so pdf were easier unless you wanted to pay 20 cent per page printed at the university printers.
doommius··on No, YouTube, I will not subscribe to Premium
True. I actually use it all the time. take a long i like -> start radio and just leave it for the day/week
doommius··on No, YouTube, I will not subscribe to Premium
The hours of content and supporting the creators way more. YouTube music is included. it's not as good as Spotify but it works well enough, google play music was 100x better. still a bit bummed over that they canned it.
doommius··on FCC chair proposes new US broadband standard of 100Mbps down, 20Mbps up
Tbh it makes sense. Streaming High fidelity content, eg 4k, HDR, surround sound can require upwards of 120 Mbit/s or more. And with more devices coming online it makes sense. It always requires providers to upgrade their dated infra thus improving reliability, quality and capasity in the network.
doommius··on What I wish someone would have told me about using RabbitMQ (2020)
Yup. Did my masters thesis on Jepsen tests and there's a huge discrepancy on how most people perceive databases, consistency models and their actual behavior. Also just driver implementations, cluster configuration and other oddities that might bring chaos and disaster out of nowhere.
doommius··on Wireless is a trap (2020)
Yup. Also just mostly wireless equipment is super low quality. It's easy to see this when living downtown in any larger city. You'll easily be competing with 100s of other APs for the 2.4 ghz wireless band. With tbr 5 and 6 ghz this is getting better but there still isn't nearly enough channels.
doommius··on Jepsen: Redpanda 21.10.1
Always great to read this. I preformed a jenkins test on Microsoft internal infra and it's a huge insight. From an academic side it's just as interesting looking into the lack of standards within consistently and the definitions of them.
doommius··on Mixed instruction set schedulers? Intel 12th gen issues
True. True, it'll only be on the server side market. but didn't intel just buy Centaur with their AVX-32768 as well? but again, probably for use in server side or their GPUs.

I assume for higher level AVX support we'd need client side compiled code or multiple binaries with different compile flags. which is quite doable today, as everyone downloads software from services like apple store, windows store, steam, adobe, AutoCAD download manager etc. so client side it shouldn't be a big issues anymore. the downloader will just fetch the optimal binary for the platform you're using?

doommius··on Mixed instruction set schedulers? Intel 12th gen issues
Agreed, but there has to be a better solution then just outright disabling the features.
doommius··on A Facebook crawler was making 7M requests per day to my stupid website
Don't think I used my email for anything important doing my time at FB. If it gets out of hand he could just make a request to have a new primary email made and use the above one for "spam"
doommius··on Ask HN: Old CS lecturer looking for advice from current and recent students
One of my lecturers dies a short recap with questions related to the previous lecture which are examples of what may be asked doing the Oral exam.(if you do that.) and there is the small detail that they aren't posted anywhere or handed out. So you have to attend the lecture and follow to get use. If you want to see some of his material Google "imada jamik" and his page should be the first. He recently did a DBMS course and I have the questions if you'd like to see.
doommius··on Intel 28-core fantasy vs. AMD 32-core reality
I would say get something a bit more beefy like i3 or i5, as most people will want to run some basic things like Game servers, database or maybe a plex server, and it's good to be able just to run things compared to either rebuilding or renting something in the cloud in a lot of instances.
doommius··on NSA posters from the 50s and 60s [pdf]
If the there higher res of these? I'm considering printing some and hanging around.
doommius··on Firmware Updates and Initial Performance Data for Data Center Systems
That's correct, and i assume these benchmarks are quite questionable, as to fix all the things require both software and firmware updates. as well as we are working with branch prediction, and such the benchmark affect this mostly. and furthermore it's very very program dependent.
doommius··on Rare footage of SR-71 Blackbirds
is it only me or is that site horribly broken? i had to scroll to videos are reload the page for them to load?
doommius··on Alphabet wants to deliver Internet access via laser beams
Yeah, was thinking something along those lines too, but it would be a 25 or 50 fold reduction in speed. not to mention stability, but if iẗ́'s just basic web traffic then it shouldn't be a problem.
doommius··on Alphabet wants to deliver Internet access via laser beams
The main issue I see with this system is that there are so many factors that will disrupt the signal. assuming India, How will they handle rain and heavy pollution degrading the quality of the signal? or will it just be a? "Oh, it's monsoon season so no internet?"
