dotancohen··on Ink droplets in motion snag top prize in Nikon Small World contest
I always try to convine my comments to the content of the article, but the captcha here has gone beyond all sense. It's presenting gen AI images of household items and asking me to identify e.g. the curtains... To prove that I'm human. It's literally a game of "guess what was in the prompt that generated this"... To prove that I'm human.

  > But the public also lost all interest in the process, some can't even be bothered to vote once every other year....
In the 1920s the German speaking world got a book whose first three chapters just hammer in how important it is for the average citizen to take an interest in his local politics. That book was subsequently banned by almost every European country in the decades since. I'm the only person I know who has personally read it, even though it is one of the most derided books in history.

I highly recommend the first three chapters to anybody who thinks they don't need to understand their local politics.

But you could identify them as ads and understand their purpose.

That will soon likely no longer be the case.

  > ... more Ads
And they will be so severely targeted to you that you won't be able to identify that they are designed to influence your purchasing or voting decisions. And they will be of production quality rivaling the highest budget films - rendered on your own hardware.

Most cutting edge technologies through history did not have near-peer widely-deployed open competitors. This technology does.
dotancohen··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Deuteronomy 24:14-15 says not to oppress a poor hired worker and requires his wages to be paid the same day, before sunset.
dotancohen··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
No.

I answered one incorrect statement. Why try to pile the world on a single statement.

  > There is no reason we aren’t working seven days a week beyond people fighting not to.
Religious edict - most prominently the Sabbath in Western civilization - have mandated a day of rest every seventh day for at least 3000 years.
dotancohen··on How is music possible
I would say they his theory is quite supported by my own experience - which is a form of ad hoc experiment.

  > It's clear that cyber is a touchy subject right now.
And that's why we need models that understand "cyber" or application and data security. The offensive models are powerful, and they are in the hands of script kiddies now. The models writing our software and designing our cloud infrastructure had better understand these issues as well, just to avoid coding in vulnerabilities.

Because it was there
dotancohen··on What shall I teach my son?
None of the wealthy people I know had wealthy parents. Most of them had parents who didn't even have shoes for significant periods of time.
dotancohen··on Sixteen years after Deepwater Horizon, deep sea life shows few signs of recovery
How about taking the full "do nothing" approach and leave the carbon under the seabed? Where it won't trap IR from escaping the atmosphere and adding energy to the atmosphere, driving ever-more energetic weather events.
dotancohen··on Sixteen years after Deepwater Horizon, deep sea life shows few signs of recovery
How much oil would they have to burn for fuel to do that? Neither option sounds good for the environment.

Thank you! That was a delve into a topic I wasn't expecting.
dotancohen··on Dogs seem to agree with humans that 'bouba' is round and 'kiki' is spiky

  > the Bouba evokes curvature because it makes me think of a Baobab tree.
Or a bubble.
dotancohen··on Dogs seem to agree with humans that 'bouba' is round and 'kiki' is spiky
It's from a PIE root and found in one form or another in most European languages.
dotancohen··on I electrified my push scooter with a power drill
Thank you.

Would it need a standard bearing on only one side of the sprag clutch, or should I double them up on both sides?

dotancohen··on I electrified my push scooter with a power drill
Thank you
dotancohen··on I electrified my push scooter with a power drill
Is that why all politicians are suddenly turning to the left?
dotancohen··on I electrified my push scooter with a power drill
Squel the tires every few meters? Like an AC Cobra.
dotancohen··on I electrified my push scooter with a power drill
What is that one-way bearing TFA mentions. I understand its purpose, but where does one acquire such a bearing?

  > inability to bank to the right side is perfect.
That disadvantage is balanced by the advantage of not having to open the kickstand at every frequent stop.
dotancohen··on Chirp Pong – uses microphones and audio for networked game play
Yes, exactly, signing the transmission is not enough.

You've just added a nontrivial amount of memory usage as well that will look a lot like a memory leak as it grows.

dotancohen··on Chirp Pong – uses microphones and audio for networked game play
Signing the transmission isn't enough to prevent a replay attack.
dotancohen··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
I've worked on projects where the test suite would take hours.
dotancohen··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
Do you have a link to the docs for that? Thanks.
dotancohen··on US federal budget deficit jumps 12% in one year to nearly $2 Trillion
That is extraordinary insightful. It's frightening to see how correct it is, and to recognise that Europe and the US are both well past the abundance phase.
dotancohen··on Making chicken transparent using Dorito dust
I see, thanks. Looking at my Anki card, my information was from 2014.
dotancohen··on Making chicken transparent using Dorito dust
I wonder if this could be applied to living tissue.

That's not a joke. Not only a cool party trick, but could help in diagnosing some medical conditions.
