I personally add a handful of automated systems to my contacts (appointments, time sheet reminders, bills, etc.)
doublepg23··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
Thanks for making this, I was checking it all day :)
doublepg23··on Apple Music 404 Not Found
My lukewarm take is that it's conspicuous consumption.

Music is cheaper than it's ever been for the consumer and segregation between genres or bands is non-existent on music streaming.

It's hard to socially signal when everyone can afford to stream and the search bar can show you Sabrina Carpenter just as easily as RYM or /mu/core.

However , you can socially signal if you spend money on an iPod, DAP, better headphones, physical media etc.

doublepg23··on Plex vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild to drop a cryptominer
I'll fully admit I do.

The point of Plex is sharing your library with less ... technical users.

If I didn't want to do that, I'd not even use Jellyfin- SMB share and mpv would be fine with me.

You're not kidding, I feel like this is better than most of those awesome-X lists that were popular for a while.

doublepg23··on New Apple TV 4K
There is a weird chain of wondering what is going to answer my response with Siri AI considering it could be Old Siri, New Siri (local), New Siri (PCC), or ChatGPT...
doublepg23··on New Apple TV 4K
$429 CAD is crazy for sure but there's a running joke in my group chats of me sending a link to an Apple TV every time someone posts about their Kodi box breaking. It's not set and forget like an Apple TV at all...
doublepg23··on A Modern Web App in C
CGO=0 came in clutch at previous job when we were deploying Go apps compiled on builders that had a newer glibc than the actual prod server.

IME it was because you already have ssh setup.

it took me too long to realize ActivityPub is basically email.

I guess we only have three protocols, email, irc and BitTorrent.

doublepg23··on I guess I'm using WebP now?
Less about range (though mine is ~30% hit) and more about a 120V socket not being able to heat the battery to charge effectively in sub-zero temps.
doublepg23··on I guess I'm using WebP now?
IME pro-EV people will say "L1 is all you need" but then motte-and-bailey and insist having an L2 is essential for cold winters...
doublepg23··on I guess I'm using WebP now?
After owning an EV for a year I have only truly needed to charge at a fast charger on two trips.

Both times I absolutely did notice the slow "refueling" times, but for 95% of my driving "around town" it is _so_ nice.

doublepg23··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
I've been in my friends Model 3 many times and it's full of "oh why didn't anyone think of this before" and EV-centric choices. There's stupid stuff too (no turning stalks or shifter) but even ignoring the software choices it's really that much better of a car.

> The software and interface are all completely fine

Perhaps whatever platform mine, my friends corolla and friends taco are on is just busted but I wish it had even 70% reliability of just working when I'm using anything software related.

doublepg23··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
It's weird to me because they apparently have the same issues across their gas cars that sell enormously well.

My friend with a '25 taco has issues with remote start, fob range and infotainment stability.

My friend with a '24 corolla has the same issues on his car.

doublepg23··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
I picked up a '25 Subaru Solterra (rebadged Toyota bz4X) for a decent lease deal and while I'm surprised how little I think about the EV parts the "car parts" are dreadful.

I really need to do a write-up on the dichotomy of EV things being good (charger works, no real battery QC issues, it's a RAV4-but-EV) while all of the shared ICE parts (anything in the software stack) are riddled with bugs or head-scratching defaults.

Overall, a fine car for me, but (as much as I do not like El*n) Telsa is so significantly beyond their offerings it's hard to overstate.

EDIT:

I forgot to add but I think the cost savings for EVs can be a wash, make sure you check the following:

1.) can't charge at home / live in an apartment.

1a.) If you do install a L2 charger at home, you will significantly reduce your cost savings.

2.) you rely on fast-chargers in any significant capacity.

3.) Double check the math on any lease, loan, etc. on new EVs vs. a beater gas car. Especially if you pay an EV tax in your state or country. (Post-COVID the $2K beater car seems to have gone extinct here...)
