dpbriggs··on To recruit teachers, school districts are building homes
Why not make housing cost less instead?
dpbriggs··on YouTube Is Down
Directly navigating to a channel works fine.
dpbriggs··on I rebooted my social life
Why?
dpbriggs··on MySafeSpace – Whitehouse.gov
It's highly irregular to have a .gov domain with this sort of content.
dpbriggs··on Show HN: Sober not Sorry – free iOS tracker to help you quit bad habits
When someone is reaching for an app like this it's a bad habit.
dpbriggs··on Charlie Kirk killed at event in Utah
Don't do anything drastic.
dpbriggs··on U.S. government takes 10% stake in Intel
Achieving that doesn't need to take the form of a 10% stake in a flailing company.
dpbriggs··on Berkshire Hathaway Now Pays 5% of All Corporate Income Taxes in America
Limited liability needs to priced to reflect the enforcement costs. Sole props are "free".
dpbriggs··on Replacing Kubernetes with systemd (2024)
I've had a really great experience with docker compose and systemd units. I use a generic systemd unit and it's just as easy as setting up users then `systemctl enable --now docker-compose@service-name`.
dpbriggs··on Honey has now lost 4M Chrome users after shady tactics were revealed
Why do retailers put up with Honey? They're clearly not providing value with the attribution theft. Why give them money?
dpbriggs··on Short-term rentals are hollowing out communities with loose restrictions
"Dignity for minimum wage" may be a more realistic tagline. It's not particularly good faith to say it's a detached house in Toronto.

We're sliding towards workhouses of the 1800s. Policy should lean towards a one bedroom apartment being achievable for all of the working class.

dpbriggs··on Wall Street Investors Enter Single Family Rentals
It's bizarre that we've prioritized increasing shelter costs for all of those who haven't hedged it. It's costing the next generation and is just unsustainable.

It wouldn't even be a bad thing if rent was low. But it can't be, as that would probably imply a lower cost of ownership.

dpbriggs··on Wall Street Investors Enter Single Family Rentals
That only work when supply isn't constrained.
dpbriggs··on 12 months left to keep Copilot off your desktop or learn Linux
The only games I can't play on Linux are mega-modded Skyrim and League of Legends.
dpbriggs··on Restic: Backups done right
It's on my TODO list to add Restic support to BorgTUI[0]. It supports Rustic but the beta nature and iffy performance leaves something to be desired.

dpbriggs··on Helping wikis move away from Fandom
There is an extension which automatically redirects you from Fandom to the new wiki. While that's convenient it probably helps Fandom stay near the top.
dpbriggs··on AI solves International Math Olympiad problems at silver medal level
This is more analogous to programmers working with copilot. There's an exciting possibility here of mathematicians feeding these systems subproblems to assist in proving larger theorums.
dpbriggs··on Show HN: Interviews Chat – Never bomb another job interview with this AI copilot
If it's any good it's an unfair advantage to the cheaters using it, putting those with integrity at a disadvantage.
dpbriggs··on Show HN: Interviews Chat – Never bomb another job interview with this AI copilot
Googling stuff and wrangling AI codegen soup doesn't scale past a certain point. I get "fake it till you make it" but there's a point to knowledge and mastery of a subject.
dpbriggs··on Show HN: Interviews Chat – Never bomb another job interview with this AI copilot
What's the point of interviewing candidates when they're parroting whatever an AI tells them?

It was hard to get signal before, and with tools like this it'll be even harder. If these systems are any good (big if) it'll be neigh impossible.

There's a point to having skill in an AI (and search engine) world.

dpbriggs··on How to Start Google
In the zero interest rate environment it was easier to get good advice and orders of magnitude more more money. A lot of those companies are crap.

Google had good timing but importantly, a good product and market fit. Prior search engines sucked in comparison with obnoxious monetization.

dpbriggs··on Google's SRE Book (2017)
Layoffs and a change in the performance management system (moving away from perf).
dpbriggs··on Google's SRE Book (2017)
I can't read tea leaves but I'm fairly confident they're not shutting down SRE. They want to get back to sublinear scaling and move away from the "devs create crap, bribe SRE (headcount) to babysit it in production". It was a major anti-pattern for the role.
dpbriggs··on Google's SRE Book (2017)
Not really, the company is massive and until recently very motivated (promo) to launch new things. SREs probably helped get things across the finish line but likely didn't start those projects.
dpbriggs··on Google's SRE Book (2017)
In my experience it's fun to do that but only worth it when SLOs are on the line (so a significant number of bad machines).
dpbriggs··on Google's SRE Book (2017)
SREs are not support agents. That said greater signalling from that area over to us would be a good thing.
dpbriggs··on Show HN: GPU Prices on eBay
What did you buy?
dpbriggs··on A study of Google's code review tooling (Critique)
I disagree. They're pretty good at auto-fixing minor issues and suggesting best practices.
dpbriggs··on Ask HN: Can you take more than 2 consecutive weeks of vacation?
I can do that without manager approval. I'm an SRE in Canada and accrue quite a bit of time off in lieu on my oncall shifts.
dpbriggs··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you listen to?
The only one I listen to consistently is the Rational Reminder podcast.
