dpc59··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
American culture did not think killing Osama Bin Laden was objectionable.
dpc59··on Striking to End Suicide Shifts, Frito-Lay Workers Ask People to Drop the Doritos
My friends that tattoo aren't getting automatized anytime soon.
dpc59··on Striking to End Suicide Shifts, Frito-Lay Workers Ask People to Drop the Doritos
A lot of people have a really shitty negotiating position. They're barely literate, living paycheck to paycheck and raising children. Are you really choosing your job when your options are super limited and you don't have the means to invest in yourself?
dpc59··on Internet down in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., after beaver chews through fibre cable
A lot of people would be willing. The people with power and contradicting interests don't.
dpc59··on Half of England Is Owned by Less Than 1% of Its Population, Researcher Says
It's easy to not give a fuck when you benefit from the inequality.
dpc59··on After a $14B Upgrade, New Orleans’ Levees Are Sinking
I live in revelstoke, if we do that Canada cant ship goods from coast to coast from december to april (the subsidy I have in mind is the Rogers pass avalanche control program) Those subsidies exist because they benefit people.
dpc59··on The Healing Power of Gardens
Look at the appalachian and pacific crest trails. Its really hard in occidental countries to be more than 50km from a city, so you always have places to buy food.
dpc59··on Sourdough Hands: How Bakers and Bread Are a Microbial Match
Lactobacillus is omnipresent in our bodies, from our stomach to our boogers, and is the main lactic acid bacteria used in sourdough bread and quickly brewed sour beers.

Most bacteria in boogers and sweat is pretty harmless stuff, and a lot of it can be used to metabolize some tasty compounds. Even some clostridiums (same category of bacteria as the disease c. difficile and an omnipresent type of bacteria in our stomachs) are used to produce esters in rum.

dpc59··on Driverless Hype Collides with Merciless Reality
>A lot of people think that mass transit is for the poor

That's because it is. I had to take the metro in Montréal to get to work this week, hadn't taken it in months because I usually bike, it's such a shitty experience. It smells bad, it's hot, it's filled with tired people that don't feel like going to work (you feel it in the air), beggars harass you, it's slow (it can take 3x as much time as riding a bike to get where you want to) and it's operating past maximum capacity during rush hour. I haven't even gotten started on when service is interrupted and you show up over an hour late to work or class. Anybody who can afford a bit more for reliability and comfort will spend it without looking back.

dpc59··on Google Scientist Resigns Over “Forfeiture of Our Values” in China
There's not really other ways to do politics other than to project soft power (cold war) or hard power (armed conflict)
dpc59··on Why Is College in America So Expensive?
>You either have to take full central control (lets not go there)

In Montreal we have heavily government funded universities, tuition is less than 4k a year. It works great, we're building leadership in AI right now.

dpc59··on Ask HN: Which types of tech jobs are best for people that can't handle stress?
sports and art
dpc59··on How Women Came to Dominate Neuroendocrinology
Women bring different perspective on a vast variety of issues. It has obvious bearing on the technical work.
dpc59··on Companies Shouldn’t Be Accountable Only to Shareholders
denmark pays their students the equivalent of 700usd per month while they're in school
dpc59··on Why punk keeps connecting people across space and time
Soundsystem/free tekno culture is certainly keeping the mentality alive. My friends that build speakers and play heavy drum and bass and tekno all used to play in punk, hardcore and ska bands in their teens.
dpc59··on Why punk keeps connecting people across space and time
Vans warped tour hasn't had much to do with punk culture for like 15 years, unless you consider using it as a marketing tool as what punk really is. I saw anti-flag and face to face at a free show in Montreal this summer and punk rock certainly felt alive. The US has punk in drublic fest going on which is probably quite authentic considering it's thrown by fat wreck chords.
dpc59··on Thailand cave rescue: all 12 boys and coach successfully rescued
Russia made gigantic leaps from 1917 to 1956. They went from absolute backwards shithole to contending world power in 39 years (even less considering ww2 was over 10 years before that).
dpc59··on Things no one tells you before an Antarctic expedition (2015)
it's also much easier to stay dry, and thus warm, at -30 than at -2
dpc59··on Greeks are abandoning cigarettes in record numbers
You would miss out on guys like warren buffet with that kind of reasoning.
dpc59··on Losing Faith in the State, Some Mexican Towns Quietly Break Away
> I have no idea how it is of any strategic importance to our country

It is of strategic importance because Assad was about to start selling oil in another currency than the USD. The moment the USD stops being the main oil trade currency the monetary bubble will explode just as it did in the late 60s (after which the current petrodollar system was instituted) and america won't be able to run on printing money anymore.

dpc59··on Losing Faith in the State, Some Mexican Towns Quietly Break Away
You could say I'd have a rational interest in becoming a doctor because I'd stand to make on average 300k a year. I won't do it for other reasons which aren't pondered.

It's easy to make something look rational when you pick and choose axioms. The republicans don't have a rational interest in decriminalization because their financial backers don't want it, and they have moral qualms about it since 100 years of government lies convinced them it's the devil's plant.

dpc59··on The Empathy Gap in Tech: Interview with a Software Engineer
It is, the term was inherited from angry 2nd and 3rd wavers. Trans inclusionnary feminism tries to frame the discuss1ion more around the concept of gender normativity for this exact reason.
dpc59··on On the Darknet, Reputation Is Everything
You're confusing communism with transition socialism.
dpc59··on Sam Altman: ‘Too many’ Y Combinator companies raise money
Not having a political agenda is having a political agenda in favor of the status quo.
dpc59··on Dozens of Companies Are Using Facebook to Exclude Older Workers From Job Ads
We have an economic system where we reward maximizing short term financial gain. As long as that doesn't change companies will try to sell the crappiest shit they can sell you for the most money.
dpc59··on How the US Pushed Sweden to Take Down the Pirate Bay
So how do we bring back money to production of media then, ensuring that the people who spend time producing it can afford a decent standard of living?
dpc59··on A growing number of young Americans are leaving desk jobs to farm
They microwave them though, eggs are good when they're cooked a in a bunch of fat with herbs and spices.
dpc59··on The Depression Thing
There's overwhelming scientific scientific evidence that supports the potential of psychedelic therapy. Enough for the various governments to give the Multidisciplinary association for psychedelic research the legal right to study scheduled psychedelic compounds like ayahuasca, lsd, mdma and psilocybin.

dpc59··on The Corrosion of High School Debate
It's not just high school debates that end up like that. Most matters of opinions or incomplete data devolve into stupid arguments when it gets political.
dpc59··on Crypto for kids
Nothing says healthy life for a 11 year old like living with your abusive aunt and uncle and having to fight the dark wizard that killed your parents.
